To be fair, the fact that they lost twice to the cheating Astros absolutely cannot be discounted. But i agree, that the inability to properly evaluate sp talent has been their downfall. Even when they got the pitcher they wanted, they still ended up screwing up Sonny Gray. And when the opportunity to get Charlie Morton was there, they instead pursued Happ, while also spending a ton of money on Gardner and CC instead. These 2 screw ups have been huge. Even not going after Darvish after 2017 is now looking like a miscalculation.

More talent? No. The rays don't have a single position player more talented than their counterparts on the yankees. But what they do have is Charlie Morton, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow.

I am not questioning the Rays talent. It was obvious to all Yanks were beat by superior pitching and timely hitting.

Maybe it's not a question of throwing tons of money at a problem, but rather understanding what the problem is and address it at a fundamental level. So rather than lament what could have or should have been done on the FA market, maybe it's time for a different approach. Rather than buy best available talent how about spending on in house development?

i absolutely agree they should continue to do everything they can to improve their development system. I just don't think that going to work for next yr, they are in absolute must win now mode IMO. They can't afford to continue wasting this groups prime yr, especially now Cole is on board

With what happened in the playoffs, not having another reliable starter outside of Cole needs to be urgently fixed. To acquire a talent like that, the Yanks options are extremely limited. They either have to sign Bauer, use a ton of spec capital to trade for one or offer to take on a salary dump from a team that is struggling financially.

Our farm system is going to be a big help in coming yrs but i''m not sure they can be counted on to handle key roles

Seems to me the more talented team is in the alcs right now. The Yankees are not as talented as people think they are 4 straight years of disappointment proves that . Especially when it comes to their pitching . Just because the Yankees have more power and Cole , it doesn’t mean they are truly a very talented team overall

Agree Day, it's not a short term plan, but rather a long term philosophy. As Sauron has mentioned more than once, a strategic vision is sorely lacking.

Imo in a competitive market place with more money available to more teams, particularly smaller markets, the Yankees financial clout is somewhat neutralized. Couple that with Hals miserly penchant and the results are disappointment.

It's not only small market teams necessity, evidence the success in the past of Giants, Dodgers, Cards , Rays and even the Mets developing home grown pitching. Currently the Rays have the top rated farm in the MLB. Led by No. 1 overall prospect Wander Franco and six Top 100 prospects. Yankees farm has improved, the international signings have boosted their rankings but as mentioned they are a long ways off.

I have a feeling given the financial stress of this season several teams, even mid-market size, will be dumping salary. The 100's of millions in lost revenue will not be easily absorbed.

That is the very definition of being more talented. The winner of a 5 game series doesn't determine that.

How do you know he will be a corner infielder in two years? Because he's tall? He's still an elite defender so even if his range takes a hit in two years he would still be more likely than not be a very good fielder even in years 3/4 of a contract.

I remember a time you also said he would be at best a platoon player. All while he was arguably the Yankees best player and on top of that he won a batting title(yes im aware it was a short season but it still counts as far as the record books are concerned)

The Yankees had all the talent they needed this year and they came really close beating the team I think will win the WS. In 2017, they lost to the cheating Astros who ended up winning the WS; in 2018 they lost to the cheating Red Sox who ended up winning the WS; and, in 2019 they ended up losing to the cheating Astros who went to the WS and lost. The Yankees' window is wide open and will be for a long time to come. They do not need big changes. Just getting back Sevy, German, and Kahlne would have made a series changing difference and will make a huge difference next year. The experience gained by pitchers Garcia, Schmidt, and King will also make a big difference next year.

I would resign Tanaka and DJ and let Paxton and Happ walk.
I would try to find a trade for Sanchez and get a cheap backup for Higgy (who I think will be our starting catcher next year).
I like the infield of Voit, DJ, Torrez, and Urshela.
I would reluctantly let Gardner walk, although if this is his last season, I would offer him a bench role at ~5-6M so he could end his career here.
I would be wary of Bauer because he could upset the clubhouse with his antics. I have always been a fan of Marcus Stroman who could be a good back of the rotation piece at the right price (although we have cheap youngsters who are about as talented).
Blake Treinen could also be an interesting option at the right price.
Plus, I would let Cashman dumpster drive and hope to find another Voit or Urshela.
I would like to see a new manager but I doubt that would happen.
