This happened with Corbin and cole 2 years ago and look what happened . Cashman gave that stupid multi year deal to happ . This time if he gives a deal like that it would be to kluber .

We obviously need a #2, but trading Dom without knowing what we have is crazy. With our luck, we will trade Dom for Castillo, Castillo will throw two innings and then need TJS and Dom will go on to be Trout 2.0. My point is pitchers break. Well, on this team, everyone breaks, but pitchers more so. I would not trade a player who could be a generational talent for any pitcher, esp. when a pitcher like Bauer can be had for money alone. I have written a few times, we should spend our remaining money on Bauer and then whatever is left, grabbing the best SS we can for one year. Or better yet, we should use our competitive advantage and blow past the LT and as a former poster would say, "sign everyone."
I think its more than reasonable to protect Dominguez and perhaps Medina. Neither the Dodgers, Mets, Angels (Iglessias) or Padres gave up any tremendous talent in deals during the last two years. But, I would keep at it. Perhaps Deivi/Schmidt, 2 lottery tickets and taking back some money, like the Moustakas contract.
Well if you'd post more, it would be a better off season.
It would distract from how much Cashman sucks.
At what point will we hear the obligatory,?
"We explored options but we really like the guys we have now. We feel like this is a team that can win it all".
I would have approached the whole offseason differently.
1. Move Judge for assets (Stanton moved to RF; Andujar to DH) and DFA'd Sanchez. That would free up another $16 mil, removed some high strike out guys from the line-up and settle some tough future decisions. I realize this is controversial. But, I never saw a path to signing Judge as long as you are saddled with the Stanton contract.
2. DJ gets his $100-110M, but I spread it over 6 years knowing I'm going to probably be eating the last year. If he balked I'd have quickly moved on to plan B. Deal value of $17-18M, would still give me about $31-32M to spend after reducing payroll in step 1.
3. I'd be all over that Lindor deal, knowing I have the ability to extend him. I'd be a little over budget at this point. DJ would rotate around the infield in the beginning, especially given Urshella's elbow and eventually settle at 1B.
4. Sell high on Voit and get some assets. Removing his $6 mil would have put me below budget again.
5. I'd push hard for Castillo, but I'd protect Dominguez, Medina and Gil. I think we could put together a package that the Reds would find difficult to turn down without punishing ourselves. Would they really turn down a package of Deivi, Schmidt, Peralta, and 2 lottery tickets? How about if I added Andujar and took back the Moustakas contract? IMO even an analytical owner like Hal would break the $210M mandate if a blockbuster deal like this was on the table. And, Moustakas would look pretty nice as a lefty DH and infield depth.
I would still feel my bullpen was a little shaky, but I'd feel pretty confident that my team would be in serious contention.
Sounds like a plan, which could work out and balance the team a bit more, but with a lot of risks.
1) If Judge is recovered from his cracked ribs, etc and is healthy, he is one of the most dominant players in baseball and you are planning on trading him for assets. What assets would work? Perhaps you should trade Judge for Castillo and not lose all the rest of the assets.
2) Put Stanton in RF. This is probably not happening if you are keeping Frazier, because RF is his best position and LF would be a challenge for him, so Frazier would be RF and Stanton the DH with Andujar, Tauchman and others getting some time in LF. Of course, Andujar might also be traded in your scenario.
3) DFA Sanchez, instead of paying him $6 million, then you are down 30 HRs and a catcher. What is the plan for another catcher. High cannot be a full-time catcher, so do you sign someone else for $3 million if you are lucky and hope that guy can hit 8 HRs.
4) Trade Voit - OK, but what if his 22 HRs in 60 games is not a fluke and he's capable of hitting 50? (22 in 60 games is 59 +HRs in 162 games.
5) I like Moose as a utility guy who can play 1B, 2B and 3B, but would that mean that we lose Tyler Wade for a better lefty bat with no speed and who becomes the backup SS? Thairo? Do we have enough roster spots.
6) In addition to Judge, Voit and Sanchez having gigantic seasons elsewhere and losing 100+ HRs, we are trading multiple pitchers that could contribute this year (Deivi, Schmidt, etc), hurting the pitching depth.
Should this surprise anyone? Yankees always seem to be held hostage and bent over the barrel. Small and mid market teams exact revenge whenever there is an opportunity.
Some would argue it's smart business.
Does Cleveland make a similar deal with the Yankees for Lindor and Carrasco?
Question, how do you replace potential 80 HR's and 200 RBI's? (Judge and Sanchez) Who is your starting catcher? You may free up cash but deplete the offense which would require (re)allocating resources to fill holes you are creating. Are you comfortable going to battle with Stanton in the OF full time? Just a few off the top of my head.
Lindor ship has sailed.
.
I actually agree with most of that the except trading judge. Give him one more season before giving up on him . Anyone who still wants to keep Sanchez has just been blinded by his “ potential “ to hit 30 hrs and forgets that he is a big liability behind the plate And is a strike out machine . So I would have gotten rid of him already . If they had a solid rotation they would not miss his potential 30 hrs at all . Just ask the nats if they missed all those potential hrs that they lost when they signed Corbin 2 years ago . I also think it is absolutely nuts to give dj 6 years . I wouldn’t even give him 5 . He is simply not worth that .
And if you are gonna push hard for Castillo then you know it will have to take one of Dominguez , Medina or Gil to get him . And I would do it . Yes I would try not to include any of them in a deal but desperate times call for desperate measures . There isn’t much of a choice now , other than Bauer .
I have one question , who replaces voit if they trade him? There is no way the Yankees were ever gonna have both lindor and dj . At the very least there is Not enough payroll flexibility to do that . Even if they got rid of judge , Sanchez and voit . They would clear only about 20 mill and having both lindor and dj would be adding atleast about 40 mill or so .
What’s crazy is keeping dom at all costs without knowing what they have in him . And he could be the next trout but what good will that be if the Yankees still don’t have the starting pitching to win a ws ? Other than that I do agree with you . They should have moved on already and spent their financial resources on Bauer already .
1. Judge is the odd man out, between Stanton's presence and his own injury issues, we should be not signing him to a LT deal at 31. Moving him and Sanchez give us $16 mil in payroll flexibility. Only way to do the Lindor deal is to have additional payroll flexibility. Reds and Indians are both salary dumping and wouldn't want an ARB2 player like Judge.
2. Assets acquired from Judge and Voit trades replenish farm.
3. Who cares about Voit production if you have DJ there.
4. Just start Higgy and get a cheap defensive catcher. There will be more than enough offense.
5. Taking Moustakas is a payroll dump to help facilitate a Castillo deal. However, Moustakas could be beneficial since he's lefty and can play several positions.
1. Its not about giving up on Judge. Its about payroll flexibility and eliminating a one dimensional, injury prone hitter who needs to be signed to big money soon.
2. The plan would be to take on Moustakas to give the Reds more payroll flexibility. I would think that the scary pick up and quantity of players would push the Reds off Dominguez and/or Medina. Remember, you still have a boat load of others to give including Schmidt, Deivi, Gil, Peralta, Andujar.
3. Under this plan, DJ and Moustakas would be available to play 1B.
Man, I’m torn. While I’d understand the yanks moving Dom for castillo, I don’t think that’s a smart move. They messed up by not being in on Clevinger, Snell (long shot in division I know), Darvish, lindor with Carasco when those moves cost middle of the road specs. Don’t make another mistake by responding with an overpay. At this point I’d rather take my chances on Kluber, Hand and Tallion.
Just saw the whole Cole saga with the ban substance. So does anyone think he gets suspended and for how long? Good thing we have a strong rotation to absorb that temporary loss. Cheers to Monty our new ace. Lol.
