I see a different person on the mound than you. I see a pitcher who is always on the edge. He teeters on trouble and collapse and squeaks out of it. As good as his record was and as good as his stuff was, I never felt safe with him pitching because I never thought he was in controlQuote:

He was 18-4 and went about his business in a professional manner. Was it inner Sanctum or living on the edge? To me 10-12 more likely might prove living on the edge.

He was moved to the bullpen in the last month of the season because of his second half struggles. God forbid Cole gets hurt or Kluber, Taillon and Sexy cant stay healthy. What if Monty, Garcia, Schmidt struggle? were just not in a position with how the rest of the pitching staff is built to just throw away a guy like German who can be a very effective starter or reliver.
When did German prove how versatile he is ? The one year he spent as both a starter and a reliever was in 2018 and he had a losing record with close to a 6 era . And if all three of those pitchers struggle then the Yankees are in trouble since German is likely not much better than them . You can have the deepest staff in baseball but if it is mostly mediocre to possibly average pitchers , how good is it really? Again with how little he is paid he isn’t as difficult to replace as you think he is . So yes you are overrating him .Quote:

Again, not a knock on his talent. I just saw a guy who got into trouble and either wiggled out, which is great or got some help, which is also great. But if the help isn't there, he has a different season

Russ pairs a mid-90s fastball with a mid-80s, late-breaking splitter. The Texas native throws them from essentially the same release point, baffling hitters who can’t tell what’s coming. In three minor-league seasons, he’s averaged 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings. In 2019, Russ had a 2.54 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings at Double-A Redding.
While at the Yankees’ alternate site last year, the team also worked with him to develop a slider, which acts similarly to a cutter, Russ said.
