I've often wondered the same thing

Atleast the mets have been to a World Series in the last ten years and have new ownership that gives them hope tor a brighter future
I think he means that nothing he thinks the Yankees will do this off seasons will help them get to the World Series . And the if rumors about what hal wants the payroll to be are true , then he could be right . Because they may not do much this off season to begin with other than bringing a couple guys back and getting a reliever
IMO they can't be as worried about money as they are letting on since they picked up Brittons 2yr option for 27m. Hand who's numbers last yr were almost identical to Brittons, was available for 3.5m less a yr. They also had to know that they could have probably gotten 2-3 very good to elite relievers this winter in FA for about what they are paying Britton They didn't even take a chance that Britton wouldn't opt in for next yr so they quickly picked up both yrs of his options. The way Brittons contract is structure is very weird for those not familiar.
Maybe i'm putting a little to much faith in Hal's desire to win but i do think he'll see all the short term, cheap deals for 2nd and 3rd tier players and won't be able to pass up those opportunities. I think Hal will let them spend if they can get good enough deals on the right players. I would be surprised if they didn't end up somewhere in that 1st tier of the luxury tax which i believe will be around 230m for next yr. If Hal ok's a payroll in that range, we can get anything we need to win and more in this winters market
Yanks 2021 Opening Day Rotation
1. Cole
2. Morton
3. Tanaka
4. German
5. Monty
Then resign Didi and move Torres back to 2b
Trade Voit and resign DJ to play 1b.
Or how about:
Tampa Bay Rays (23 years)
Colorado Rockies (28 years)
Seattle Mariners (44 years)
Milwaukee Brewers (52 years)
San Diego Padres (52 years)
Texas Rangers (60 years)
The Mariners are the only current MLB franchise that has never appeared in a World Series; the Padres, Rockies, Rangers, Rays, and Brewers have all played in the Series but have never won.
Are they not worried about spending, or are they simply not very good at balancing their money? Every year the yankees are either 1 or 2 in payroll and look at who we have on this team. I can easily see them passing up almost every reliever on the market because they just spent 27 million on Britton. We need stoppers and multi middle inning relievers, not named Cessa, holder and Lasagna. Britton is generally a must have for most teams, but not at his price, in this market and with so many needs for next year.
In what should come as no surprise
Yankees to give DJ the QO.

If they end up only picking up Brittons option and not much else, thats a very fair question. I completely agree that we need better multi inning options than Cessa and Holder, neither of those guys are worth what they are likely to cost next yr. This was Lasagnas first full yr in the BP and the stuff is still very good. I would like to see them give him 1 more yr while he's dirt cheap to see if he can get it figured out but in a much reduced role. They have given much worse guys longer to figure it out than him, IMO
If they really pass on all the top relievers on the market at the prices they are going to be available i will be very surprised. Since they non tended Kahnle they have over 100M coming off the books from last yr so their is going to be some money to spend. I guess well have to see what happens
good point. I'm not a huge O'day fan, i'd like to see them get a power arm but thats just me.
Velo and a high spin breaking ball seem to be the recipe for success in the pen, especially from RHed pitchers.
While we absolutely need to add arms on the FA and trade markets for this yr, in this future they need to develop more of our own BP arms. Luckily we have a ton of arms coming that could make big impacts out of the BP. I think a guy like Abreau and Nelson have a chance to be big contributors to the pen next yr.
We have so much money invested in our BP, hopefully we can develop another couple Betances like arms and save us a ton of money going forward.
I'll give u he would be a big improvement over the Holder, Cessa types we have in the pen now. I'll give you he'd be an excellent 3rd or 4th option this winter. I think were going to need atleast 2 better arms, like Hand, Hendricks, Rosenthal and guys of that quality that are going to be available. I also think the failed starter market is going to be primed to take advantage of also
I think Betances opting into his contract with the Mets for 6m VS taking a 3M buyout is very telling of how cheap relievers are going to be this winter. If Betances and his agency doesn't think he could do any better than 1yr 3M on the open market and no team was interested in Hand for 10m its pretty good indication of how cheap that market is going to be. Its going to be a shame if the Yanks don't take advantage of that market to strengthen what was clearly a weakness last yr
until proven otherwise yankee plan off season resign dj a good thing bring back tanaka and gardy not a good thing and a few minor touches here and there and hope the result will be different.... that is why i am not hopeful next year....
They already have, they nabbed Britton at the bargain basement price of 27 million, before he could elect free agency and have another team could swoop him and shower him with money.
As for Lasagna, i don't think his future is written in stone, but we've watched him nibble at corners and afraid to pitch to hitters for 3 years now, despite having some of the better stuff on our pitching staff. If he's a future closer, or even a setup guy, I honestly don't see it.
That is what I expect from the front office too , although I do think they will trade for another reliever to replace khanle .
As for laosigia , I think it is about time they move on from him . In 3 years as a starter he has shown he is a back end of the rotation pitcher . And as a reliever a guy that should be brought in when the game is atleast 3 runs in either direction .
How am I changing the rules ? I stated that winning a pennant is more than what the yanks have done in the last 11 years . I never said it wasn’t a failed season to lose the ws . I agree it is . But getting to the World Series is going further in the playoffs than the yanks have to over the last 11 years and that is a fact .
Liam Hendriks, Blake Treinen and Hand are intriguing FA's in a buyer’s BP market.
Top 50 FA and their expected price and destination from MLBtraderumors. They only have the Yanks resigning Tanaka

They are usually pretty accurate on money but rarely ever get the place correct
If the bluejays can get DJ for 4 years and 68 million, that's a steal.
And yet no starting pitching on that list you made . And that is exactly what they have been lacking for close to 10 years now , especially the last 4 . And the constant lack of starting pitching over the years is why I never got my hopes high on what the front office did
I am not saying that will happen but I wouldn’t be shocked if cashman lets dj walk . He didn’t want dj in the first place , his assistants had to talk him into signing dj.
As for Tanaka I think they bring him back because we all know how cashman loves being sentimental . That’s the main reason why he keeps bringing Gardner back
13 mill a year is a heck of a pay cut for Tanaka to take . That’s a bit more than half of what he made this past season . And I read about Paxton’s injury history with the m’s and before . I can’t believe cashman traded one of the yanks best pitching prospects for a pitcher with a long injury history like Paxton . That is just unbelievably stupid. But on par with cashman , he did give 7 years to hicks and held on to judge while he was a minor leaguer . And if the dodgers get Bauer we can forget about the Yankees winning a ws anytime soon
