Yankee off season thread, news, notes, rumors and ideas

There are only about 5-6 elite players that are going to get paid like it's a regular season. The rest of the market isn't going to get paid anywhere close to normal salaries.

All u have to do is look at The Brad Hand situation. The last couple yrs pretty much every team would take a top 3 AL reliever on a 1yr 10m contract , if for no other reason to flip him at the deadline. No team was remotely interested.

Any 2nd or 3rd tier player and it looks like the reliever market is in for a very slow cheap winter.

My guess is other than the top guys teams will wait to spend until they find out if there is going to be a vaccine in time to start the season

Why would they have to wait to see if there is a vaccine in time for the season ? They just finished a season without one . Mlb can survive one more season without one . Salaries will have to take a good hit for a season or two .

That may be the key. If fans are back in the stadiums and there are normal gate receipts game changer. No fans - no spend.

Problem is

They won't know if fans can return to the stands come April, Long after free agency opens.

I wonder if anyone will do a contract(odd one) say just a guy like Brand Hand(name and numbers just for example)

Sliding scale(0-25-50-100)

1 year 6 mil(no fans)
1 year 8 mi(25% capacity)
1 year 10 mil(50% capacity)
1 year 12 mil(100% capacity)

Just an example. Although, I doubt it. But, would be interesting if it did happen.

True.

I wonder, given the bizarre nature of the 2020 season if they amend the rules for FA for one year, or come up with some type of alternative to help compensate. I'm sure the MLBPA lawyers as well as players agents, are working overtime hashing out different scenario's.

I’m looking at the off-season like the market. When the market tanks, that’s when everything is on sale and the rich get richer. Yanks are in a unique position to get richer. Outside of the true top tier guys, there are going to be some very solid players available for team friendly deals. I know I’m not saying anything new, but this isn’t the time for the yanks to get cheap. If a player like Hand isn’t wanted by their current team, there are going to be a lot of other players teams might try to dump. Could we steal a Whit Merrifield, or a ketel marte type?

agreed. There might be a handful of teams that might be able to survive another season without fans but not many. They only played 60 games last yr and the league lost close to a Billion dollars overall with massively reduced salaries for the player and not paying the MILB staff/players, they can't do that again league wide on a full 162 game schedule.

There is supposed to be a vaccine around the first of the yr. If that proves to be successful then i think you will see teams start to spend money after that. If we get a vaccine, there will be lots of time between Dec-Jan and ST for teams to fill out their rosters. If we don't get a vaccine or fans aren't allowed back in big numbers its going to be a long, cold winter for most teams

Another thing people need to remember is that its not just the MLB players these teams have to pay, they have to pay coaches, training staff and the massive expense of a MILB season. Teams absolutely can't afford to not have their farm system play next yr. Loosing 1yr of development time for healthy players is a massive loss, 2yrs might not be recoverable for alot of young players and maybe the end of their careers.

excellent idea but i'm not sure they could structure it that way. The only way i could think they could structure a contract way is if they gave bonuses based on the % of fans in the stands. Similar to performance bonuses that they give to players if they hit certain numbers

I think the later in the winter these 2nd &3rd tier players are sitting out there, the more creative your going to see contracts get. I also think there is a good chance just like we saw today with Robbie Ray that those type of players are going to jump at contracts even if they are significantly under valued. How many teams are going to offer that tier of players contracts, likely the majority of those players will be lucky to get multiple offers, they may only get 1. If the markets play out that way then maybe they only get 1 offer they may have to jump at to ensure they have a place to play next yr.

IMO the best strategy the Yanks could employ is to target those mid tier players they would like to add earlier and low ball them and see if they except. It won't work with every player but i could definitely work with some, especially relievers. The analyst are only picking Hendricks of the relievers to get a multi yr deal with

Even if a vaccine comes out early 2021, it is unlikely many people will rush to take it until others have take it and suffered no side effects. Assuming the 2021 season starts in March, there is no way the stands will be filled. I would expect to see something along the lines of what the NFL is doing. In fact, even if a vaccine comes out and it proves effective, many people may be gun shy about packing into a stadium for a while. The pandemic is going to leave a lot of PTSD in its wake.

Wait, you mean no vaccine in October? Or early November at the latest???

Excellent points. Also, that vaccine will likely be used on military and first responders including Drs, Nurses, interns... I doubt the public sees anything till the spring at the earliest.

I agree about the PTSD, It will change the way we live permanently

As fans, I do not believe we should expect stadium crowds for quite a while. I can see them doing a quarter or a third capacity with strictly enforced, rules but that will be it.

That exact thought crossed my mind. Imo DJ should be a priority, but I can see Hal and co. rationalizing the move.

Long term Lindor would actually be the better choice because of age and likely long-term production.

Short term DJ should be the priority.

Agreed.

Imo Lindor would be a luxury. He would allow Torres to move back to 2B and DJ to 1B or trade. DJ is a better and more versatile bat. Lindor a good bat but stellar SS glove. Personally I would love for Torres to succeed at SS. I would hope they show some patience. I can envision Yanks scooping up Lindor at the RIGHT price. No question he is the top SS in MLB. If you had $20M per to spend short term would you give it to DJ or Lindor? Who improves the team more? Who gets you closer to WS? As I have said previously, Lindor is a luxury not a necessity. Imo DJ is a necessity.

I fully agree with both of you guys.
Lindor-Torres-Gio-Voit could be a very good IF for 6-8 years.
Ideally you get both and trade Stanton so Voit can be the DH. but as long as the yankees get one or both of DJ and Lindor, it's all good
