I would agree that the Yanks don't do rebuilds and are very unlikely to do so with this group. That doesn't mean they shouldn't if the situation calls for it. Unfortunately if they aren't going to upgrade this roster, especially the pitching this winter they should start the rebuilding process. At very minimum they should be exploring every trade opportunity and gage the value of their roster. Who knows maybe we get a Shelby Miller kinda deal, if i remember correctly the Braves got 4-5 top 100 specs for Miller, for somebody to jump start our next core. They need to do away with the old ways of not extending players early or not looking to maximize the trade values of players they don't plan to build around. If they don''t go all in whats the point of keeping the roster essentially the same.
I absolutely agree with you a healthy season of Sevy, German, Paxton and Kahnle would have made a massive difference this yr. IMO we've having a completely different conversation if we would have had full, healthy yr from just 2 of those guys much less all 4. I still wish i could have seen a healthy rotation of 1) Cole 2) Sevy 3) Tanaka 4) Paxton 5) German like it they intended for us to have when they signed Cole. Healthy that would have been a top 3 rotation
As far as next yr i have no clue what they are going to do but basically staying as is isn't the way to go period. They should either go all in to win or try to extract maximum value from guys they don't plan on using in the next core.
I think guys like Cessa, Heller and Holder are all DFA candidates IMO.I have always been a big fan of Lasangas Talent and stuff but next yr needs to be make or break with him. I think we could easy replace what that group has done the last couple yrs for much cheaper either internally or through FA. Over the course of next yr how much better are Cessa and Holder going to be vs Nelson and King. I'd rather save the money and go with the kids especially in the front end of the pen. I'd rather see them give a guy like Robertson a minimum or MILB deal with incentives rather than any keeping those guys, atleast there is a chance for a big upside with DRob or someone like that. I'd love to see them get Aaron Sanchez for a BP experiment
I absolutely don't think 40m is enough to retain DJ, Tanaka and upgrade the team enough to seriously be ready to compete and win against teams like the Dodgers and Rays. The only way thats going to be enough is if they unload everything they have of value on the farm to trade for the right priced pieces as well. IMO the absolutely bare minimum they can do this winter and hope to compete next yr is resign DJ, get a legit #2 starter and another solid BP arm. Even then Sevy and German are going to have to return to their elite status and then they'll have to get huge contributions from the farm to be serious WS contenders
As far as who gets traded this winter IMO Voit and Frazier have their highest value and could get back really good returns. Unless one of those 2 guys or Gio gets traded Andujar doesn't really have a spot next yr so he is a likely candidate to get traded. I just hate to part with such a talented bat, that i absolutely would love in the lineup, when Andujars value is so low. I haven't understood what Cash is trying to accomplish on the trade market the last 2yrs. We really needed to make key trades the last 2 trade deadline and Cashman didn't do anything so i have zero clue what to expect from the Yanks trade wise this winter. He's been very quick to use "everything was to expensive for any deals to make sense" excuse the last couple yrs. I think he's going to be forced to make big and difficult personnel decisions this winter that may or may not get him and Boone canned
If they can get anything of value for Sanchez they should but i doubt they will give up on him with his value being basically a negative right now. The way hes is going he should have another AS yr next yr if he follows his career pattern.
There are so many questions they will be forced to figure out if they decide not to spend to get what they absolute need this winter, it's not even funny. IMO were either going to see Cashman make some bold moves and take risks he hasn't been forced to make in yrs or he'll do nothing big and likely seal his and Boones fate with another failed yr . Its really going to be interesting to see what they choose to do this winter. I think its likely that Hal only spends if he feels we have a legit shot at winning the WS next yr.
Another factor on how much they spend next yr is they will not exceed whatever level it is that would cost them money from their IFA pool. They won't exceed a level that causes them to loose out on another superstar prospect like Arias
