This is an excellent point.

Could you stop PRETENDING you know what would happen in a game? You've seen them botch such a play? So have I. SO WHAT? I'm sure no other team has ever blown a rundown play. Have you ever seen them not botch a rundown?
And to say they'd never have 2 clutch home runs late in a game is one of the dumbest things you've ever said, and that's saying something.
And the fact they haven't been in a WS since 2009 has nothing to do with this post.
Lol from your finger tips to Gods ears. I just have a gut feeling that Cash will go out and get another Pineda, Paxton type. Cheap, high upside, big arm, high spin rates and is missing that final thing that could make him an ace, same story we've heard before. I'd so much rather see him go for a Gray type complete pitcher. Upside might not be as high but is a very good, complete pitcher that doesn't need to be "fixed". I still think the OAK or Reds version of Gray would be a perfect #2
I'd be fine if Thames left, we need a new hitting coach that teaches contact hitting instead of swing for the fences. Gio is really the only guy i can think of that has seen massive uptick in his ability
I'm very torn on Blake. I don't think its fair to judge him based on how screwed up last yr. That said if he is as non-respected by the MLB pitchers as that scout claim they need to add a veteran pitching coach to handle the MLB pitchers.
Blakes development record is beyond excellent and with all the elite arms we have coming up through the system he's definitely the guy i want to see working with the kids. He was effective in Cleveland because so many pitcher bought into his philosophies on there way up so they trusted him and his methods, I don't think he's gotten that chance here yet. I don't want to see him gone by any means but i'd like to see his position change back to the development side. If he has the same kind of developmental success that he had in Cleveland, once some of the kids that have bought into his methods make the pitching staff then consider him for the pitching coach job if we need one then
I know he's an anals guy but there have been whispers that he doesn't like how much he's been forced to use them in his pitching programs. I really think this team relies on anals way, way to much. The game isn't played using stats or computers, you have to have a combo of both to be successful IMO
BTW Naehring was the inside GM option that Hal like's so much i mentioned to u the other day. I think to keep him they are going to have to make him the GM or at minimum assistant GM. Cashman is the Senior VP so technically they have an opening at GM. I just don't see Hal firing Cashman because of his close relationship with the family. IMO our best chance at getting a different voice making or helping make the decisions is to get an actual GM. Guys like Theo and Friedman have separate GM's so there is no reason we shouldn't have one as well.
Hals not a dumb guy from what i can tell and he can't be completely blind to Cashmans failure to get the right players we need to win. I think he's going to have to make this a make or break yr for both Cash and Boone. Our championship window has been wide open since 17 and we haven't even made a WS. We've wasted enough prime cheap yrs of this core and going forward Coles prime yrs. Failure to make the correct moves this winter to upgrade this team IMO its going to be another wasted yr.
At minimum we need a TORP, 1-2 middle relievers and a contact type LHed or S hitter. Brantley is the perfect guy in my mind. All the guy does is hit/ make contact and he has legit pull power that he could take advantage of short porch in RF. He also loves teaching hitting, maybe he could help the young kids adopt a more contact orientated approach and possibly get him to be the hitting coach down the road. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better hitting teacher in baseball if he wanted to be.
Yanks are internally discussing bring back Didi according to the athletic and rumors coming out of the Yanks camp. The plan would be to put Torres back at 2nd, put DJ at 1st, if they can resign him and use Voit as a piece to acquire a TORP.
IMO Didi on a 1yr deal is an excellent option. It puts Torres back at his better defensive position, DJ take over 1st base full time which should slow his decline as he's getting older and would immensely improve our infield defense. Didi would also give us a solid LHed bat that we know can handle playing in NY. He also shouldn't be that expensive either, i would guess in this market he'll be lucky to get 1yr 8m
If they only signed Didi to a 1yr deal it would give them a chance to go after one of the premier SS available after next season, Lindor, Seager and Correa when they are FA.
I absolutely think we need a new voice in that front office, get a GM who isn't so reliant on analytics. They need someone who has the ability to identify our needs and isn't afraid to think out of the box to acquire those players IMO. I'm not crazy about Naehring but if Hal like him enough to make him the GM or something along those lines I'm all for it to get someone else making or heavily contributing to the personnel decisions.
I feel like Cashman is way to comfortable i his job because of his relationship with Hal and the family. I'm sure if Hal doesn't give him a make or break ultimatum it will be way to easy to make the easy choices for this roster this winter. We need to fix the areas discussed but if Hal isn't going to spend the money that allows us to shop at the top of the market then we need someone who can get creative to acquire the needed type pieces, especially pitching.
I just feel that with as comfortable as Cash is in his job, i can see him going the easy route because i'm sure he thinks there is always be a next yr to hopefully win if everything goes right.
If they go the cheap way to fix the pitching and basically go with what we have or maybe just resign Tanaka, I'm not sure we're a playoff team next yr if they go back to the regular playoff format. The Rays are only going to get better because they will graduate 3 top 50 specs next yr and Toronto is coming fast.
If Hal does keep us below 210M were going to have to get incredible performances for our pitching specs and all the pitchers returning IMO to seriously contend next yr.
Sherman is saying that the max the Yanks are going to offer DJ a 4yr80m deal with a possible performance based 5th yr option. Alot of insiders are saying that DJ is going to have to take a discount if he wants to stay with the Yanks and most feel that is unlikely because he's never really had a big payday. The only hope i have is hopefully DJ doesn't want to leave the place where he transformed his career. He just seems like the type that he would pass on a couple M to play where and with who he wants but u never know. He took a discount to come play here the first time, hopefully he'll do it again. If they lose him, especially to a rival, it will have to go down as one of the dumbest decisions they've made in a very, very long times
As to hitters that have improved, in addition to Gio, add Voit and even DJ- yes he was a good hitter in CO, but never did he average .355 over two years, plus remember that was in Colorado where everyone hits better than at lower altitudes. Not so with DJ! Maybe even Frazier.
As I think about it further, if I were an owner I would be mandating a major cut in payroll too. There just is no visibility when this covid crisis will be over and there will be some sort of a return to normal. With that being said, I'd give my team a good shot at making an extended playoff birth, but wouldn't go all in. I would also view this as a good opportunity to reset the luxury tax:
Under that scenario, I think I'd do the following:
1. DFA Sanchez and save the $6M (sign a veteran to share the role with Higgy)
2. Pay Gardy's $2.5M buyout and say see ya.
3. Do whatever was necessary to move Stanton, even if it cost me $10M annually. Like it or not, no Stanton deal then no DJ.
4. Resign DJ to the dollars he wants but likely extend that value over an extra 2 years like the Hicks deal.
5. Move Sevy and German to the bullpen to bolster it without additional cost.
6. Move Voit for a starter, my guess is that it would be a mid level starter and use DJ at first (or Ford if DJ deal doesn't work). Wade and Estrada would share the SS role for this year.
7. Resign Tanaka to a reduced deal. 3/$45Mish
Assuming 2021 looks to be normal, that's when I'd spend.
1. Ottovino is off. I'd replace with Brad Hand in FA
2. Thor is available in FA
3. Lindor is available in FA
4. Sevy moved back to rotation
5. Probably have to move on from Judge and make a trade to extract some value (no way I sign him to a contract that starts at age 31).
As long as cashman is working in some capacity for the Yankees whoever the GM is , will answer to him . Cashman made it known when he fired girardi and hired Boone that he wanted complete control
I like most of what you said there but Stanton isn’t going anywhere mainly because of his ntc . And resigning Tanaka and getting yet another mid tier starter for the rotation will likely not get them any closer to a world title than they are now . Outside of that I really like your ideas .
I agree. Gray was a fantastic pitcher in Oakland. No way of predicting he would weirdly crumble in NY. Paxton was excellent here when healthy but that was his problem...staying healthy.
Also, for all the strikeouts are the end of the world and this team will never win while having a high K% people... The Yanks had the 8th lowest K% in baseball this year. The Rays had the second highest K% in baseball. The Rays are striking out at a ridiculously high rate in the playoff yet continue to play very well. Playoff baseball is about pitching and timely hitting which can be very random at times.
i don't believe the yanks will do anything drastic this off season meaning prepare to be disappointed again next post season...yankee brass believe if you do something year after year eventually you will hit the jackpot...
If i remember correctly, i thought it was the AAA hitting coach that helped Gio so much the fall and winter before he got his shot with the MLB club.
I kinda thought Voit came over and started tearing the cover off the ball right away but he did help him improve this yr so that is an excellent observation.
Frazier calling card from the time he was drafted was his bat speed and overall ability to hit. To me Frazier had never gotten an extended opportunities because of injuries, attitude and in 19 his awful defense.
If this were a different team i would agree with u about cutting payroll, that said the Yanks basically print money. Even though they lost some money last yr, with all of the payroll shedding were going to see from other teams and much lower FA prices on mid tier players, IMO this is the time to be aggressive. We will have an excellent opportunity to improve this team alot if they are willing to be aggressive to fix the issues we have. With our window really starting to close with this core, this is the time to go all in instead of being passive in the market.
Hand has a 10m team option for this yr that Cleveland is very unlikely to pickup because they are trying to cut payroll so he should be available this winter.
As much as most of us would like it Stanton isn't going anywhere. He has his full NTC and if he is traded the money the Marlins are paying to get his contract down to 21.5 AAV goes away. No team in there right mind is taking him on with basically missing most of the last 2yrs.
I completely agree that the playoffs are about good pitching and timely hitting. I really think we need atleast 1 more regular LHed hitter or atleast a SH to add more balance.
The biggest reason IMO we haven't won in the playoffs for a long time is the lack of quality starting pitching we haven't had. The worst part about that is Cashman passed on so much elite pitching the last 5-6yrs. We do have Cole now and that as good as it gets as an ace but to win in the playoffs we have to have more and we really don't have time to wait for our pitching specs to develop enough to seriously contribute in the playoffs.
For me what Rothchild did to Gray was on par with what happened to Joba. Gray was a complete, successful. pitcher with multiple top 10 CY young finishes before he got here. They simply didn't need to change the way he pitched to try and make him more successful. How much better would we have been the last 2yrs if we had either version of Gray when he wasn't here. He'd have been an excellent #2 behind Cole this yr and to rub salt in the wound we really didn't get anything of great value in return for him.
With the way Paxton pitched in the 2nd half i really thought he was going to have a big yr but he got hurt and lost all that velo and spin. I loved watching him pitch when he had it, great stuff just can't stay healthy. Paxton is going to have to take a 1yr prove it type deal somewhere. Unless he really wants to stay here though i just don't see him taking that kinda deal from us. I'd offer him 1yr 5m with a bunch of performance incentives. There could be huge value in that deal if he returns to 2019 form and it would only be a cheap 1yr deal so we wouldn't have much to loose. I don't think a team can have to much good starting pitching and if Paxton could stay healthy he should be very good again, atleast as good or better than Monty
even if the yanks want to bring didi back didi won't be signing for 1 year i do not think unless it was for premium money
never said Voit alone would get a TORP but your nuts if you don't think he's extremely valuable. He's 29 and making less than a M a yr and is a middle of the order bat in any lineup in the league.
Teams are desperately looking for cheap players that can carry a lineup like Voit has shown he is capable of. IF they trade him they will get something of high quality in return for him
Easy FA, Stroman. Trade wise realistically speaking Carrasco. Are these my favorite choices? Hell no, I wish we could do better (get Bauer) I wish we could get a Walker Buehler for a package but I'm just being real. Trade wise you have to look at teams and see if what we have to offer would tempt them. We have a lot of right handed power, teams like the Brewers, Indians, Nationals (they probably want LH hitters) and Cardinals all need offense. The rest of the AL East ain't gonna help us and neither is the Mets so you can cross them off.
An intriguing name who I think might be available is Carlos Martinez, he had a bad year but he has a good track record previously. He could continue to suck for sure but he is a buy low candidate. It's just whether the Cardinals would give up on him because he does have question marks.
Outside of Bauer, every FA pitcher has question marks, all the guys I just mentioned are in the same boat. But that's why it's possible to obtain them. No team who thinks they are in contention is ready and willing to trade a #2 starter unless there is a reason like lowering payroll.
He was a high contact hitter, who won a batting title in the NL(yes im aware of coors effect)
So, I disagree.
I mean he was better than I expected him to be.
But, IMO he had starter written all over him, not a platoon player.
That's the problem when we have people who make posts that are absolutes and many times without backing up their claims.
*addition*
If you wonder why we're so hard on johnny about this, I suggest going back to the yanks signed dj thread and see what he had to say.
I also have to give sauron a hard time, he was off on this was well. [emoji846][emoji6][emoji12][emoji12]

That’s the thing EVERYONE was wrong about dj , even cashman didn’t want him at first . His assistants had to talk him into getting dj .

Wow I enjoyed reading the article, pretty much agree with everything the scout said!
