As for my scenario, i personally don't typically find the need to use the word. I may have used it while repeating song lyrics or something like that but certainly not often.

I can recall one time calling a black person the word. I was 17/18 and my grandmothers neighbor, a black woman, called my 75 year old grandmother an "old b****" and threatened to kill her. I overheard this and went outside and told the neighbor to "get her ****** butt in the house before i killed her." We argued for a couple more minutes before an older black man i kinda knew was walking past at which point the black woman threw out the n word card. "He called me a ******." Her thought was the black guy would hear this and defend her but since i knew the guy he asked me what happened. So i told him the full story at which point he said " well, it sounds like you were acting like a ******". Anyway, this was obviously something that happened in my youth. I was young and dumb and didn't think before i spoke. And it's certainly not something I'm proud of.

ActIng as if context is irrelevant is the route of this issue. It doesn't matter if the word has a hard "er" on the end or a soft "ie". The context should define the word's purpose.

In the movie Brian's Song based on the book "I am third", Brian Piccolo is helping Gale Sayers train to rehab a knee injury. However, Sayers was not giving 100%, so in order to motivate him, Piccolo calls him a "chicken ******," causing Sayers to burst out laughing. Sayers wife hears the commotion and asks what was going on and Sayers replies, "Pic tried to call me a ******." This scene would never be shown on tv today because context is irrelevant. But to me it's a grear scene showing love between two men at a time when it was difficult for people of different races. Both men dealt with hate from racists but stood by each other and supported each other.
