And this is the problem and why people distrust the police. If I have to weigh the possibility I will be hurt or arrested when the police come to check on me, I’d just as soon they don’t come to check on me at all.

Why couldn't THEY have cooperated? Their sole reason to be anywhere near him was for a requested wellness check, not suspected criminal activity just a check to see that he was alright. He said he was, he told them why he was walking down the middle of the street, they continued to the point they WERE antagonizing.
Picture yourself as a young black man...difficult, I know, but give it a try. It's late, it's dark, it's cold, and you're tired. Why on earth would YOU be in the wrong to want nothing to do with officers you know have no reason to be there?
It's not speculation that the police harassed a black man for nothing, it's right there on video.
Hell, even as a white guy in a predominantly white area it's not like I welcome them.......awhile back I'd been at one of our Indian casinos, hadn't been a good night and now it's after midnight and I have 20 miles to drive and just wanted to get home. The little town has a painfully slow speed zone of 25mph the whole stretch I had to drive before getting to the highway. I get to the stop sign at the end and make my turn onto the highway. I see a police car but I hadn't done anything, hadn't been drinking, kept my speed down....still, as I start building to highway speed out of town I see him behind me flipping his lights on. My first thought was NOT 'he's just doing his job' it was more like 'cripes, what does this prick want'. The end result was fine, he claimed I rolled thru the stop sign (which I hadn't), but his real reason to stop me was...the odds were good a guy driving where and when I was would have been drinking. But even as a white guy in a white area if I had the option it would have been to not have the encounter at all.
Precisely. How sad is it that everyone is almost relieved this kid only got wrongfully arrested and not wrongfully killed. All it would have taken is police to say they saw him reach for a pocket and didn’t know if he had a weapon on him and we’d have another “justified” police homicide.
his right okay, and what did that then cause, even if not justified.
I'm not on either side, the police here went too far. but it could have been prevented with better cooperation.
imagine what could have happened, or not happened, had everyone been polite and cooperating. no incident.
The easiest way for this situation to have been prevented was the cops to not harass him. He did nothing that warranted harassment.
Why is it so hard to cooperate? Because he doesn’t have to. It’s not his fault if police harassed him for something he didn’t have to do.
You believe the fault is 50/50. The fault is 100% the police here.
He always has to preface it with something instead of just admitting that the police went too far. Cops are taught to de-escalate and act to a higher standard then the people they come in contact with. Yet we see incident after incident of that not being the case.
Its inexcusable.
They asked him questions, he answered. What better cooperation is needed?
They wanted him to act submissive toward them and he didnt so it bothered them. That's neither their right as cops nor his duty as citizen. The only two who were tangoing were the 2 cops.
