COVID-19 Response: An issue that shouldn't be at all political....yet here we are

SiteWolf and Nasty are actually promoting the correct answer — such as it is even in the midst of a pandemic — but for the wrong reasons.

According to the Supreme Court, religious organizations do deserve special consideration and a unique status vis a vis other enterprises — but not (as SiteWolf claims) because of their “emotional draws” or the “variety of events” or (as NastyNice claims) because they can follow protocol — but because of the First Amendment.

Period.

I don’t think anyone was arguing what the SC decided only whether it was the appropriate decision. First amendment rights for the free exercise of religion are not absolute (like all rights) and I don’t believe that limiting in person mass worship is unreasonable in a pandemic. Some SC justices also share that opinion.

Not that I know of. How many epidemiologists and virologists do you communicate with regularly? I get regular updates from CDC at work. I post the most recent recommendations and facts from there and other reputable sources.

Which is as it should be, right?

Now, we can argue what status churches should have (and I am sure we will probably not agree for all the many reasons enumerated in the last twelve hundred posts — yikes!).

The question remains: are churches officially designated as essential or are they still non-essential? Or are they now in a special category of their own?
