Unless I'm mistaken the KKK and Neonazis had a permit to march in Charlottesville. Protestors did not have the moral high ground. And how did a thread on Covid end up talking about the Charlottesville confrontation? That happened long before Covid and, if it deserves it's own thread, one should be started.

As I said, neither side had the moral high ground. The right-wingers had the permit to march. The left-wingers brought weapons and provoked a confrontation. How is that the "moral high ground"?
The best way to have handled this situation would have been to let the right-wingers march and go away. They wanted a confrontatation and the left-wingers gave it to them. Neither side had the moral high ground. Both were wrong.

And? The right to free speech doesn't absolve them of what's in that speech. Don't confuse constitutional rights with morality. They aren't the same thing. Yes, they might have legally been allowed to march and spread around their hate speech but on no planet are they the ones with moral high ground. People have the right to counter protest that if they choose to. Don't let it fool you either. Those Neo Nazis and KKK members were out there to stoke racial and religious tension. And anyone with a brain knows that coordinated efforts of hate cause confrontation. That's what they wanted. If they stay home, there is no violence that day.

I didn't say you did. I said that their permit to march really means squat. That doesn't mean people are just going to sit back while hundreds of far right wingers spread around hate. Its not just about publicity either. They want their message to reach a larger audience. A lot of that is a recruitment vehicle so the answer isn't to ignore it. Its to condemn it.

The problem is so many took your position. That both sides were bad when the reality is there is no justification for these Klansmen, neo Nazis, etc to be spreading around their bigoted ********. The moral high ground stands with those who come out against those type of racist, xenophobic *******s.

I agree, there was no reason for the racism to have been allowed, but there was no reason to confront it, when that is precisely what the racists wanted to happen. Let them have their march and ignore them. They will go away and the people will know what they are all about anyway.
