US President Donald Trump has been lambasted by the medical community after suggesting research into whether coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body.
He also appeared to propose irradiating patients' bodies with UV light, an idea dismissed by a doctor at the briefing.

"Not as a treatment," Dr Birx said. "I mean, certainly, fever is a good thing. When you have a fever, it helps your body respond. But I've not seen heat or light."
"I think it's a great thing to look at," Mr Trump said.
If he decided to walk back the statements or imply that he was joking after the fact....then that is yet another example of his incompetence and dangerously stupid way of handling the pandemic. In April, which includes an eight day period from the 23rd of the month to the 30th, following Trump’s comments, the increase was 121% compared to April of 2019. In the first ten days of May, things settled down some, with poisonings up 69% over the same 10-day period in 2019.
For bleach, the numbers are less dramatic, but still telling. In January, February and March 2020 poisonings were up 7%, 1% and 59% respectively over each of the same months last year. In April they leapt 77%. As with disinfectants, May has similarly improved a bit, with the first ten-day period showing an increase of 51% over the same 10 days last year.

In the midst of those numbers, the President of the United States was on national television, and either suggesting an unproven and spectacularly dangerous treatment, or he was making a joke about a treatment that would not save any of those 15,000 people that died.
Even if you don't believe he was serious in his rambling about injecting disinfectant and getting light inside the body, how the **** is it a defense that the President was making jokes about treatment on national television while 15,000 people were dying that week? The best defense people have of this boils down to, "He wasn't stupid and irresponsible, he was just a monster, so it's fine!"
It was such a great joke, in fact, that Lysol had to put out a statement:
"As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route)," a spokesperson for Reckitt Benckiser, the United Kingdom-based owner of Lysol, said in a statement to NBC News.
"As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information," the statement continued, adding that the company believes it has a "responsibility in providing consumers with access to accurate, up-to-date information as advised by leading public health experts."
And even his own Surgeon General had to thread the needle of putting out a statement the next morning telling people not to do that without being so obvious that it upset Trump:

Let's pretend that the cheeto was in fact joking. That is the best defense or explanation republicans can come up with. Their defense is that the president of the united states was holding an official press conference to discuss a once in a lifetime viral outbreak with medical professionals surrounding him and he thought it was a good idea to joke about a dangerous way of treating it. He did this knowing that he has a humongous following of uneducated and easily influenced supporters.
That is their best defense.
However, we all know the truth is that he really believed it, said it, and people got hurt taking that advice.
