I agree with what you have said, except the travel part. If people are masked, air travel is safe. Airplanes can be fitted with hepa filters that remove all pathogens from the air and completely disinfected between flights. They would require frequent maintenance, but they would make travel safe.
The PPP was in place until the congress failed to reauthorize it. It paid businesses to pay their employees to keep them off unemployment and hold their jobs open.
I agree that remote work is a viable option, as my significant other is able to do her job from home and chooses to do so for the most part (she works in a college library). We are trying to keep her elderly mother safe and so far, we have been successful in keeping her from being infected, even though I was infected, a grandson was infected and a great nephew and his family were (the relatives all live within half a mile of her house). When I was ill, I didn't go anywhere for about 2 weeks and had my things delivered to my house. People would leave things on my deck and I would pick them up as I could.
As far as calling people "short-sighted dimwits", that is a term I would not use. Pandemic fatigue is a real thing. People are genuinely tired of not seeing family. Elderly people in nursing homes are developing a condition called "failure to thrive" due to their isolation. Young people in nursing homes are getting depressed. Residents have told me they would rather take their chances with Covid than not be able to talk to their families face to face.
You have a good grasp of this situation, but we all need to work together to beat this. We all need to be vaccinated and, until this happens, continue with masking, social distancing, and good hygiene.

In january when this popped up and into February, I thought travel would be restricted in and out of CA, WA, and OR (thought they would lump Oregon with us) and NY. I thought they would only allow business travel, and heavy screening in all high traffic areas. If we had this sort of baseline, as we learned more about the virus we could keep restrategizing and trying to keep the economy in the most open phase as possible, which at this point in time would most likely mean eventually getting to some pseudo mandatory mask mandate. Because this allows for the most open economy possible. $5 a mask for 350 million people, less than $2 billion total, easily worth it.
