If that were the main case, you would see a huge rise in numbers in all states with protests.
But, we're not seeing that everywhere.
For example: NY has had many many protests and the #s are on still on the decline.

Premature openings, relaxed social distancing, refusal to wear masks and mass gatherings, are all contributing to an increased spread. I don't know why it has to be mutually exclusive, it can be a combination of many things.
But, I will say I do find it interesting that certain states have seen a spike, while others are still on the decline. When all are in reopening phases and have had protests.
