What's interesting about NYC is that most people that have never been there think NYC is Manhattan. Actually most Manhattanites probably think that too.
NYC is actually 5 separate boroughs (counties) and even the outer boroughs refer to Manhattan as "the city." To a Manhattanite, if you're from the other boroughs you are considered "strictly bridge & tunnel." (Only way to get to Manhattan.) So you're "B&T" or BBQ (Brooklyn, Bronx Queens). Those terms are considered "friendly slurs." If you're BBQ…you just don't get it. Manhattanites consider the outer boroughs some sort of gulag of style & hipness.
It's actually pretty funny at times. A lot of the stuff they did on Seinfeld had a lot of truth to it. Same with Mad Men and the Devil Wears Prada.
Heard a guy on talk radio once fully admit that if you didn't live in "the city" you have no chance at getting a good job in several industries…fashion, publishing, advertising, public relations, television, News. They actually felt as if you just didn't "get it" if you didn't live there. Interesting bit of discrimination there.
I grew up in Brooklyn and spent most of my adult life in Staten Island (another world completely.) Never lived in Manhattan but did go there quite a bit. Liked most of the places, didn't care for the many pretentious people.
