Massive tax breaks to get people making six figures a slightly higher paycheck isn't something that I'm going to lose any sleep over.

Yup, I live in NYC. This was a huge missed opportunity for my fellow local residents. She doesn't even understand that the tax incentives are only available if Amazon holds up their end of the bargain. Amazon would have set a great precedent that doing business in LIC would encourage others as well. It's baffling to me how she doesn't understand the concept of additional tax revenue yet she is the one who constantly tries to bring in additional tax revenue by taxing people more. Short-term, yes, rent will increase in surrounding areas. But that was ALWAYS going to happen regardless of Amazon or not. Long-term, this was a huge blunder by NY and I am deeply ashamed by our local politicians who have no clue what they're doing. Those 25,000 Amazon workers would be spending a lot of money in that area. If anyone lives in NYC and has visited LIC, they would know LIC has been struggling recently because a lack of commercial activitiy. Amazon's presence there would have boosted the area and encourage more businesses. Really, like I said, this was such a huge blunder. Instead of grabbing additional tax revenue, we will have none of it because AOC doesn't understand what the word incentive means.
Amazon and NY talked a big game but nobody going to work for Amazon isn't already making a good deal of money. This is no different than sports teams convincing politicians that massive tax breaks are necessary to keep the team in the area or to move somewhere else. Lies and propaganda fueled by Amazon's name.
What are you talking about?
1) Tech jobs are in high demand. Of course they should be getting paid good money for their services.
2) This is very different. You seem to think this is a zero-sum game where both sides can't benefit.
3) The massive tax breaks is a lie. They are contingent on Amazon fulfilling a hefty amount of investments. You do realize building in NYC isn't cheap, right? Amazon was going to spend billions on their office. Who do you think benefits from getting those billions of dollars used to construct the building? The tax incentive exists because OTHER cities (over 100 cities were bidding for Amazon's selection) were very interested in offering their own package as well. Even someone like De-Blasio (as left as can be in some aspects) was favorable with this deal because he understands the tax revenue could be spent on more of his socialist programs.
4) Lies? What lies? The tax incentives are CONTINGENT based. If Amazon does not fulfill their end, they don't get any of those tax incentives. Also, you must realize the area you are speaking about before you make an incorrect assumption. LIC was designated an opportunity zone because there is a lack of commercial activity. The only reason LIC is expensive is due to its proximity to Manhattan. But other than that, there aren't many businesses or economic activity going on. This is why the tax incentives were also offered. Amazon's office would mean 25,000 people would need to eat, buy groceries, buy furniture, use telecommunication services, purchase cars, etc., All economic activity that NYC and the local government in this area will not get.
More ignorant posts from you. Not surprised.
I don't like tax breaks for massive companies either but at the end of the day they'll get it somewhere else. This is not good for Long Island City. That whole area of NYC has a great location but really does need some development.
The jobs that Amazon needs aren't ones that you can just swoop into. The only people qualified to take them are those who have been in the industry for at least a decade and likely two.
Tax benefits are a zero-sum game. Some people pay the taxes and Amazon benefits from them.
It's very funny that you trust the state of NY to administer tax breaks more effectively than I do. Is that irony lost only on me?
1) Wrong. Not every position will be a tech related job. Further, you're ignoring that it drives economic activity around the area and that increases jobs for other sectors. A contingency was that Amazon must build a school. They were planning on that. Teachers would've been hired, road officers, construction workers, restaurants, cashiers, supermarkets, etc., are all potential benefits of this.
2) Tax benefits are not a zero-sum game. Listen, here is what you need to understand. Taxes are used as investments. Think about what our tax dollars are used. Schools? It's an investment. Hospitals? Investment. Police officers? Investment. This is the same. It's an investment towards higher paying jobs, economic activitity in an area that desperately needs it (which is why it was designated as an opportunity zone), and more businesses to be created. Tax dollars are an investment, period. It's just a matter of whether it's a good investment or not. This happens to be a good one. It's why people receive tax benefits for itemizing mortgage interest and also, installing solar panels.
3) Are you an expert on the tax law or something? Otherwise I'm not sure what expertise you've offered of relevance. Seems like mumbo-jumbo to me.
And don't ignore the fact that Amazon has to qualify for these incentives. They aren't given to them for free. For Amazon to come to LIC, they would need to spend billions before they ever qualify for those incentives.

Watch the video. Every single thing she created her argument around is false. We don't have $3 billion lying around to pay for these "schools, roads, etc.," that she is talking about. The tax incentives are what Amazon would get with the REVENUE they have provided. It's like if you said, "I'll give you 20% of what I earn if you let me do business here." That's where the money is coming from. That 20% IS the tax incentive. AOC, another brilliant politician who doesn't even understand what a basic financial proposal is but is supposed to "revolutionize" the country? Interesting. No Amazon = No $3 billion. Is she that incompetent?
I am amazed at how much you suddenly trust socialists to write fair and effective tax policy.
That's not what I said. It's a fact NYC is one of the more socialized states and I've accepted that. I have no problem with it. Here's the thing: You're assuming I have a problem with it because all you want to do is take sides. Your argument isn't applicable here. You just deflect when you're wrong.. as you are in this case. You shouldn't be writing stuff you have no knowledge about. Your entire premise and opinion is invalid and has been disproven.
Oh boy AOC (among many) don't understand economics and LI and NY just lost big here.
25000-40000 Amazon jobs. Those people have to live, eat, and buy things somewhere. They also have to pay income taxes. Oh and Amazon will be taxed.
I can't believe people think that Bezos got some behind the scenes deal or that NY got a raw deal. Yeah all these cities across america were bidding incentives for Amazon, because it was going to be bad for them to come to their area....... Why can't people just think.
Northern VA and Nashville are absolutely thrilled with this outcome
Those darn successful rich companies!!
