I guess we got Jamaal Crawford. Nice bench piece
If you guys get Crawford, IMO you capped off the best off-season... I'm a C's fan and a Thib's fan...
IDK what to think about the Crawford move?
Well we have a solid scoring option off the bench now. That's nice. Kind of really bad scoring off the bench last year. Now what?
Was that the biannual exception we used? Or the mid level exception? Does anyone know how the NBA salary cap works? Lol.
What next? I feel like we still have 3 or 4 roster spots open...

"Room exception". I want to say that that is the mid-level when you go into the off-season with cap space.
Good move getting Crawford. Old, but perhaps a bit more "reliable" and definitely more rangy than Shabazz (surprised the Nets haven't done something stupid there yet).
Crawford stinks now. But he is an upgrade over Bazz. Sad
i have not heard bazz's name mentioned once in the rumor mill - kind of crazy
Wasn't sure how much more we could really add so while not great adding a solid bench scorer like Crawford isn't bad.
He's not the most efficient player, but he never really was. Are there any metrics that show he stinks? I think that's a little strong. I mean he's still what he ever was, a bunch-scorer/offensive initiator off the bench. Something we needed. A better Shabazz is nothing that I will sniff at at 4 mil a year.
He's a role player, and we had that empty role.
Role filled.

he hasn't been league average in efficiency for 3 years now, at his age is a terrible defender, and isn't the shooter we need. That being said, his pure volume of 3 attempts at least pulls a defense, he can create his own offense, etc.
What I mean is, this isn't the Jamal Crawford that won multiple 6th man of the year awards.
He will bring more consistency, even if it's not very good, to our bench. He will also help in the locker room. But he just isn't a plus player anymore.
he will improve our bench, but will hurt us if we ask him to play important minutes consistently (if we need him matching up against starters constantly).
But improving our bench isn't a monumental achievement. It was absolutely hideous last year. Just getting slightly below average players to fill it out, versus the way below average players we had last year, helps.
Remember too, Gibson, or Dieng, comes off the bench. Immediately upgrades it..
I know his shooting is not great but would bring his toughness and experience...... If on the cheap would be fine.Quote:
Tim MacMahon: Clippers and Timberwolves are two teams I’ve heard that have interest in Tony Allen. Doc Rivers, Thibs have ties to him from Celtics days. – via Twitter espn_macmahon
I still don't get why Tony Allen. Anthony Morrow better be the other signing haha
Jonathon Simmons is now available. S/T with the spurs for aldrich and okc 1st.
I'd love a grinder like Tony coming off the bench. Been a fan of watching him since he played at OK State!
That grinding mentality rubs off too.

Crawford could work because Thibs has a track record of success with scoring guards. I'm not just talking about DRose; under Thibs guys from the scrap heap like Nate Robinson, John Lucas III, Aaron Brooks, DJ Augustin played some of the best basketball of their careers. Hell he even made 36 year old Mike James look serviceable.
There's gonna be about 5 minutes a game when KAT and Jimmy will be on the bench at the same time. (And Teague or Wiggy may even be on the floor during those 5 minutes)
JC won't be asked to contribute in a major form. He will fill a role. And I think he will fill that role rather well.

Random Ramblings:
I'm actually very interested in what Tyus Jones will do this season as our second PG. He improved from his rookie year and in the time he was on the court still managed to be efficient despite us having the last ranked bench in the league in DEFF.
I mean his numbers are not that impressive, 3.5 PPG/2.6 APG/0.8 SPG/1.1 RPG, but take into account this is playing at a 12 MPG average. Rounded off to 36 minutes his numbers are a lot more respectable 9.7 PPG/7.3 APG/2.2 SPG/3.1 RPG and shooting a decent clip from 3 (35%) which helps to stretch the defense.
Of course he is not going to be a 36 MPG guy (at least not yet) but it does show that when on the court he is effective. From what I read he works tirelessly on his game so I expect him to make another jump this season. If we sign a vet PG I hope it is only for insurance and not to take minutes from Tyus. At the very least we can improve his stock and have him be an asset should we want to trade him.
We should sign Brooks to the vet minimum so as not to impact our cap and call it a day at PG. We seriously need to move Aldrich as well to clear some space. I don't know what shooters we can possibly acquire with the remaining 2 million in cap that we have unless they take the vet minimum. With Patton going down for who knows how long that kind of puts in a trickier situation in terms of depth at the 4-5. I'm just glad we are actually in a position where singing players for the vet minimum is actually a possibility, meaning they would actually want to sign here.
Tyus sees the court well and runs the point just fine. He also has been clutch throughout his life (from hike school thru college and summer league...he's always had ice in his veins in big moments) and he has really good hands...but he's so soft on D. If he can figure out how to be a solid defender, he should have a long NBA future as a solid backup point guard.
(And he's my friends lil brother)

I like Tyus more than you should like/care about your backup pg lol
We had some chatter going that thibs does well with score first guards. How about we trade phoenix for Knight? It seems like hes been in the league forever but apparently is only 25 and is on a 3 year 44 million dollar deal.
We would have to package Aldrich, jones and payne and OKC and maybe another late first or second.
To me he would be ideal for a bench player. It does create a bit of a void with a fourth big but it really shouldn't make a huge impact come playoffs.
Remember how last year one of our biggest issue's was shooting? We have addressed that by trading away our best shooter and adding Jeff Teague. We need more shooting with whoever else we sign.
Reports we were interested in Morrow, Brooks and Alan Anderson. Stay away from Morrow. His shot seems to have fallen off a cliff.
Unless our shooting improvements come from within (meaning Towns/Wiggins improve), we won't be a good spaced team. Butler/Teague are acceptable, but by no means good three point shooters. Teague is a pretty good catch and shoot guy, but we need Wiggins to make a jump on catch and shoot badly. Towns, we need to figure lands around 37-38%, we just need him to take better, and more, attempts.
I really see no reason Dieng shouldn't have developed into a reasonable corner 3 point shooter at this point. Crawford isn't a great three point shooter, but his sheer volume keeps defenses honest.
Adding shooting at this point, with players who will probably play 45-50 games, at 8 mpg, doesn't matter much.
Belly manning up and hitting shots with any consistency at all might help too, but he is a lost cause imo.
We are going to be a bottom 1/3 team in three point shooting. Thib's has his team. Grinding, defensive, pound the paint. Guess we will see if that still works in the modern NBA...
The biggest thing that stands out is, we now take the ball from Wiggins late, and give it to Butler, who is very good down the stretch. That alone probably wins us 10 more games, then add in defensive improvements, and Towns potentially taking the next step and moving from top 15-20 players, to top 5-10, and we should see 45-52 wins.
