Dwight and Smith (with Rondo) is a fan dream. Would love to know where the consistent offense will come from with that team, not including the great free throw shooting.

with that team it would be time to check ego's and say look guys... we worked magic to get you all together... there's so much potential and talent to do great things for years to come... how about taking a slight pay cut (a la Miami)... i hate bringing up the Heat bullish... and its a lot easier to say being in my position.. but you play to win championships... so in my eyes I'd take a pay cut because the ring is the thing, i can live quite comfortably on the multi millions
at the end of your career what did you accomplish? a max contract on a mediocre team? or ring(s)? you can't tell me there's ONE single nba player who would rather have a "max deal" over the title of "NBA Champion"
Dwight and Smith are the only 2 that could take a "pay cut" in what they are asking, and I highly doubt Dwight will when he can get max and play with a star already in Houston, or go to Dallas where the owner will make a Rondo/Dwight/Dirk trio happen if needed.
People seem to be forgetting where our GM and Coach came from and how they have been taught to build an NBA championship roster. There is nothing recently that has happened with the Hawks franchise to even come close to being a respected winning franchise, so I say let Ferry/Bud get their vision going and hopefully don't bash them as they build the team the way they think it should be built if we don't get the Dwight and Friends squad. Hoping only makes the truth worse if Howard signs elsewhere. Recently we have let go of the old Hawks ways (Zaza, Ivan, etc) in favor of Ferry's Spurs-like vision (drafting international, hard working players). Either it's a youth movement and a foundation to a new Hawks, or some NBA 2K Dream roster is about to happen and these picks are stashed overseas (2 1st round picks?). Just don't get your hopes up if the "dream" doesn't happen as I am personally looking forward to the future of the Hawks.
This franchise had a chance to be special, then it F'd up with missing on drafting both CP3 and DWill. People forget that it took some down years, a couple of nice draft selections, and player development to put this franchise in a position that it was almost special (Hawks went on a nice run though). Now all of sudden you got these fantasy league players posting like Rome was built in a night. Last thing this team needs to do is spend money, just cause it has cap space. Ferry does not need to setback this franchise like Joe Dumars did when he overpaid some guys just to try to make a splash. Take Howard out of the equation, is there any group of guys that the Hawks can sign this Summer that would even be as good as the team of the last couple of years..HELL NAW. Jefferson, Iguodala, etc;..CHILD PLEASE. A.I. is best served as being the 3rd best player on a contender, not no 1st or 2nd option that's gonna put a franchise on his back. No need to "landlock" this team with guys with inflated salaries that are gonna battle for a lower-tier seed, just to be put out the second rd. Folks be patient and let the man work, the process has just begun..
amen slugger amen
Well it took an eternity, but I agree with Slugger. AI would be a good signing in conjunction with Howard. But by himself, I'll pass.
I'm sorry man... I completely understand where you guys are coming from and most of the time I'm all about waiting things out... but I've been a fan for far too long and i need to see some major results... It seems like we've been rebuilding since Nique left... It's always the same with my teams always coming up short or taking too long to get where they need to be...
Falcons: FINALLY on the verge of accomplishing the ultimate prize
Braves: ONE championship with all those division titles :sigh:
Hawks: well.....
UGA: .....
moving on...
I'm never jumping ship, and they'll be my teams if they never win another game... but it's time to go hard or go home... I'm not banking on the lottery, to hell with Wiggins, no way we have a shot at him... I don't want to continue to rebuild and stay in the basement or NBA purgatory any longer... Just call me J G Wentworth "It's my money, and I want it NOW!" lol
sorry guys... just had to let that out :sigh:
As far as what has been confirmed, The Hawks had visits with Dwight. Will have vista from Tyreke Evans,Andre Igoudala. Al jefferson and Monte Ellis have expressed mutual interest in the Hawks as well. Danny Ferry has said they are looking to build a strong defensive team that is well rounded. Wont overpay just for the big headline. A far cry from what Rick Sund was doing, just being complacent. Glad Ferry has a vision.
I believe Evan was offered 12 mil a year. Being a RFA, looks like we won't sign him, as I don't think we should pay more than that and anything lower Kings will match.
To be honest we have more of a shot to get a pick of Wiggins/Parker/Randle and whoever else rises as a potential star than Howard signing here. First of all, Howard chooses while if you have the worst record in the league, are you not automatically picking at the very least 4th or so in the draft? Next year's draft is deep and there are more than 4 players that I would want from it.
Guys I'm telling you, if we don't get Howard, our best bet at a turnaround and star is the draft. Ellis, Jefferson, etc will only give us the same results as we have been getting. Wouldn't you want Ferry to build the team his way, with his handpicked players? I would rather let him pick a guy in the draft than to keep the playoff streak of losing in the 1st or 2nd round going by signing the same ol'.
It's not even just Wiggins. Parker could be our franchise guy. Randle. Young. Smart. One of the Harrison twins. Now think if we could sign and trade Smith for a draft pick as well. 2 guys from next year's draft could turn the team around quickly.
I'm already having my "Dwight type dream" for next draft:
Dennis Schroeder
James Young
Jabari Parker
Al Horford
Either one of our rookies or a FA
No, he was offered 4 years $40 million by the pelicans. Im not a big Evans fan anyway tho. But if all else fails, he could be a solid SG. In a different system on a new team could do him good. Just giving an update tho, not advocating a signing or anything.
Frazier...goodness, go sulk by yourself. Everybody's frustrated but you're the only one acting like a child. This was Ferry's first draft and you have absolutely no idea how good(or bad) the players we drafted are nor do you have any idea about the players we passed over. Only time will tell. Everybody wants to win but that's not happening overnight and we have a new coach and GM, chill the eff out.
Another note on Evans, Sacramento will probably look to add Monta Ellis anyway so instead of overpaying they probably will just straight up sign Ellis instead of trying to match for Tyreke. Just a thought. Don't really care though.
Objectively speaking, if I'm Howard, I'm signing with the Rockets and that's what I fully expect him to do. I do think Atlanta would be his 2nd best option if you're focusing on the team but the situation with his family is complicated and only he knows how he really feels about that. It must be annoying for people to be asking you for tickets and whatever else all the time. I'm cautiously optimistic about our chances of getting Howard but I'm not getting my hopes up at all.
Talking to FAs doesn't mean anything other than we're kicking the tires which is something any good GM would do. Teams don't necessarily need superstars to win, though it is much easier with them. Even the Pacers this year were one game away from the finals.
Patience.
Everybody will tank for Wiggins. Fine, I would tank for Parker and be happy with my pick (comparisons to Melo). Point is, we don't just have to tank for Wiggins for it to be a success. Plus I think Ferry will eye the Duke prospect more so.
Exactly. How many big time FAs did Ferry actually pull in at his time with the Cavs (Larry Hughes)? Of course he got Shaq at the end of his career, but he never really looked to pair another team's star with Lebron. That Amare rumor never reached anything as Ferry was high on his draft pick Hickson instead (and come to think about it, which one would you have now? Ferry made the right decision).
The draft is where Ferry (and the Spurs) wants to build a team.
Could this get done without Smith? Would Dwight come here for the "impressive" Bud and to be paired with Horford to make the best frontcourt in the league?Quote:
@WojYahooNBA
In Atlanta and Golden State presentations today, Dwight Howard camp considered both coaches, Mike Budenholzer and Mark Jackson, impressive.
It looks like I'm talking to myself right now (:)) but I just want to bring up something about Ferry looking to get a star in here. There are 3 ways to do that:
1. Free Agency (Dwight Howard the only one out there)
2. Trade (Nothing to trade)
3. Draft
If we don't get Dwight, and #2 isn't in the cards right now, the Draft/tank is the only way. This upcoming draft is the best draft to do so (Celtics know this).
I seriously doubt we tank...
How does this team look
Teague / Schroeder
Evans / Williams / Jenkins
Korver / Cunningham
Horford / Scott
Howard / BeBe / Muscalla
I'm in serious doubt that we sign Howard... And honestly, idk that a Howard/Horford/you name them combo cud even contend in the east right now! Yeah it'll be one of the best backcourts if not the best... But we are seriously lacking scorers to compete with MIA and now BRK. If we can't get Howard, then I feel like we shud go all in on a rebuild. I say we sign and trade Josh and Teague for picks or exceptions and Trade Horford for a top 5 pick next year if possible. A possible 2 top 5 picks in a serious draft class isn't a bad way to start. I would also try and sign Al-Farouq Aminu SF and Xavier Henry SG to multi year deals. Both could blossom given a full starting schedule. Fill the rest of the roster with vets and prepare for next years draft and FA.
Ugandan,
I'm not acting like a child but a fan who is stating facts that we can't sell a team with no pieces to a free agent that wants to win a championship. We have no pieces right now with a lot of money to spin on who? We will be a destination for FA that want toget payed with no expectations.
I don't think anyone was implying that the free agent visits meant someone was going to agree to sign. If you follow college recruiting you know that official visits are nothing more than to get a feel of what both sides are offering. No one expects this team to suddenly win the finals with a few acquisitions.
Everyone has an opinion. But where is the logic in intentionally putting a D league team on the court, just so you can get a high draft pick? 1 player who may, or may not pan out is very illogical to pursue. You just can't do that. 1 player won't boost our chances at anything. We have to actually have talent around that player for the team to succeed.
I agree thats why tanking is not an option. We need to put pieces together while building thru the draft. Its ok tro draft for potential when you have a team in place, and we don't have that not even close that's why i'm upset with DF and Bud they are drafting like we have a spurs team already. You draft three projects that probably want even play this year, so who is on the floor for us AL, jenkins, and scott thats it and maybe teague come on think you draft one project and two decesnt players we had 4 picks and this is what you have to show for it. Every time i talk about it i get upset I just hope that they have a big play in free agency and they didn't put all there eggs in for CP3 and DH.
1, you can do that.
2, did Cavs have talent around Lebron before they picked him? Sonics before KD? No, it's because they were picking #1 (in KD's case, 2). You get the Franchise guy then build around him.
I don't know why people like to settle for "just making the playoffs" around here but that is what people see in the Hawks franchise. You get a star either by FA, Draft, or Trade. Tanking is what can get you a star, not signing Ellis.
The Hawks haven't had a legit star since the days of Wilkins. We need to get a star player. The city needs a star... Not all these above average players that can't get us to the finals. It's gotta be Howard or Wiggins. Nothing else will get us even close to a championship
well we need something and from what i think we didn't get it in the draft. If you want to tank do you realize how much money you loose to get a player that could be like Oden, K. Brown, and i'm pretty sure the number of bust lottery players out number the ones that are actuall super stars, so the risk reward is very lop sided
While I agree Parker could be a superstar as well, It would take a huge fall from Wiggins for him to over take Wiggins for the number one spot. Just like the LBJ draft, there where many who liked Melo and posed the same question, but at the end of the day just like with the LBJ draft, Wiggins just has such massive overall talent, that no one is passing on it. Unless he gets hurt, I don't see it happening.
Either way, there are 5 or so guys that I feel comfortable rebuilding (tanking) for in this draft. If we don't get Howard, I would rather get a Parker, Young, or Randle instead of Ellis, Jennings, etc.
If we stay the same ol' Hawks, would people really want to see the wins followed by blow outs on national TV? Or the 2nd round eliminations? Boom or bust. If you're not first you're last. Well if we don't get the boom (Howard/championship) we should try for the potential boom, not the safe middle.
I might be seeing too much into this but Bledsoe will be traded to the Suns, who will look to trade Dragic and Gortat. I'm wondering if we miss out on Howard and won't tank, I could see Ferry wanting to add these 2, as they seem like players that fit that Spurs mold. We wouldn't need Teague while Schroeder can learn behind Dragic.
Not a fan of this idea btw, just something I could see happening. I still want to rebuild.
Is it me or are we just sitting back waiting for someone to fall in our lap. we only have like five players on the roster. we have to do something or it will look like were taking a dive with a pocket full of money.
I no guys are like be patient, but come on i dont think the owners want to loose that much money if you thought it was hard to get people to come to the game imagine if we do what we are doing now NOTHIN absolutley nothing. There want even be a decent player to talk into comeing here to loose.
Nobody can sign with anyone yet. Waiting for Howard N' Friends to be over, Ferry prob waiting to see if he needs to rebuild or not. He won't overpay for the 2nd/3rd tier right now. Waiting for the "Superstar" to make his decision, then see what else there is. Won't make deals just to make them, plus you can't sign anybody until the 10th anyways (when Howard finally makes his decision).
We have talked to Howard, Evans, and Smith it seems. Also been rumored with alot of others.
