Kevin Reese, the Yankees’ director of player development, said Jasson Dominguez, who is working out at extended spring training, could eventually be assigned to a minor league affiliate this season. The obvious progression would have him at Class A Tampa, Reese said.
Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders
The RailRiders fall to Syracuse 5-2 in their season opener. They are obviously 0-1 on the season, but hey: Luke Voit looked good!
Starting Pitcher: LHP Mike Montgomery: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 4 K – 37 of his 64 pitches (57%) went for strikes…the 30-year-old lefty threw 50 innings for the Royals across 2019 and 2020…he took the loss
In Relief: RHP Nick Nelson: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K – It was more of the same for the frustrating Yankee reliever, who threw a wild pitch in a 1-2 count with the bases loaded…he also surrendered a home run...all in all, 20 of his 33 pitches (61%) went for strikes
In Relief: RHP Reggie McClain: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K – the 28-year-old made his Yankees organizational debut after 30 MLB innings with the Phillies and Mariners in 2019 and 2020
In Relief: RHP Nick Goody: 1.0 IP, 2 K – nice clean inning, 8 of his 11 pitches (72%) were strikes
Rehab Watch: DH Luke Voit: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB – who needs a rehab assignment? I know a big league team that could use some 1B production
Miggy Mantle: LF Miguel Andújar: 0-4, 4 LOB – brutal night for 2018’s breakout player, who grounded into 2 double plays…nice to see him get some work in the outfield, though
Gittens Alert: 1B Chris Gittens: 2-4 – no word on his exit velocity, though nice to see him keep up the hot spring
Leftovers: Socrates Brito, the best named player in the Yankee system, hit a 2-run homer…Robinson Chirinos played catcher, which was nice even if he went 0-3…Derek Deitrich went 1-4
Starting Pitcher: RHP Luis Gil: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K – 38 of his 63 pitches went for strikes…nice debut for the 22-year-old, who pounded the zone and limited the walks…love to see it
In Relief: RHP Ron Marinaccio: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 7 K – 29 of his 48 pitches (60%) went for strikes…dominant debut for the 25-year-old
In Relief: RHP Stephen Ridings: 1.0 IP, zeros, 1 BB, 1 K – 15 of his 20 pitches (75%) went for strikes…his name sounds a lot like Steven Tydings, which is funny to me
In Relief: RHP Greg Weisssert: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K – 13 of his 18 pitches (72% went for strikes
Florial Watch: CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 K – he lead off the game with a HR, but strike out twice…folks, it’s the Florial Experience
Hitting Star: LF Thomas Milone: 2-2, 2B and 3 RBI
Leftovers: Oswaldo Cabrera went 1-4…Dermis Garcia was 1-3 with a walk
High-A Hudson Valley Renegades
The Renegades had a rough night at the plate, falling to the Jersey Shaw BlueClaws 6-2. The big story, though, is that Luis Medina performed well in his 2021 debut. They’re 0-1 on the season now.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Luis Medina: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K – 41 of his 67 pitches (61%) went for strikes, an important tell for the 22-year-old…he struck out 5 of the first 6 batters he faced…he’s now struck out 71 batters in his last 47 MiLB innings
In Relief: RHP Elvis Peguero: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K – just 22 of his 39 pitches (56%) went for strikes…he took the loss
In Relief: RHP Nick Ernst: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K – 18 of his 31 pitches (58%) went for strikes
In Relief: LHP Matt Minnick: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K – 12 of his 18 pitches (66%) went for strikes
Hitting Star: RF Pablo Olivares: 1-3, 1 HR – the 23-year-old hit a solo shot with two outs in the 9th
Leftovers: Rough night for the big starters for the Renegades…Oswaldo Peraza went 0-4, Ezequiel Duran went 1-4…Josh Breaux was 0-3 with a walk…the team struck out 13 times
Low-A Tampa Tarpons
The Tarpons beat the Dunedin Blue Jays 11-7 in their debut, but it was a weird offensive performance. Of the Tarpons 12 hits, 11 came from the top four spots in the lineup…Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, Trevor Hauver, and Jake Sanford went 11-17 with 7 walks. The rest of the team…did not do that well. The Tarpons are 1-0 on the year.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Matt Sauer: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 6 K – 30 of his 54 pitches (55%) went for strikes
In Relief: LHP Michael Giacone: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 1 K – 18 of his 33 (54%) went for strikes
In Relief: RHP Wellington Diaz: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR – 22 of his 38 pitches (58%) went for strikes
In Relief: RHP Nelvin Correa: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K – 20 of his 35 pitches (57%) went for strikes…an error and a walk put the tying run on deck in the 9th, but Correa got 2 K and and a ground out to end it
First Rounder Watch: SS Anthony Volpe: 2-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB – The 20-year-old infielder had a double and a triple as he reached base 5 times…nice to see, I left him off my to watch list, so hopefully he makes me, an idiot, look dumb
First Rounder Watch Times Two: C Austin Wells: 2-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB – Wells hit a HR in his first pro game, and he reached base 4 times…pretty good debut, even if he struck out twice
Multi-HR Watch: 2B Trevor Hauver: 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB – The 22-year-old middle-infielder hit 2 HR in the first game of the season, not bad
Four-Hit Game: RF Jake Sanford: 4-6, 2 RBI – all of the hits were singles for the 23-year-old outfielder
Absolutely great to see those outing from both Gil and Medina. Gil looked very, very good in his outing, Medina shined. The best thing i saw was that he only issued 2 walks which would indicate that the control continues to improve and striking out 5 of the 1st 6 hitters is a hell of a start to the season. He’s now struck out 71 batters in his last 47 MiLB innings, that doesn't even factor in his incredible performance and being name pitcher of the yr in the Caribbean winter league or his dominant performances in the Caribbean Series against AAA/MLB competition.
If those 2 can continue like they did tonight, they'll be top 20 specs by the AS break. They could also be in position to be those electric type arms playoffs teams call up late in the yr that could be dominant
I've been expecting big things out of these guys for the last couple yrs, tonight was the first step in that direction.
Florial hit a HR in his 1st AB
C Austin Wells: 2-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB – Wells hit a HR in his first pro game, and he reached base 4 times…pretty good debut
Overall some incredibly good opening day performances for our guys....we've been waiting for it
One bad note ,Roansy Contreras, sent to the Pirates in the Jameson Taillon trade, started tonight for them. He looked pretty good, too, striking out 11 in 5 innings of work with a 97 mph fastball. He didn’t walk any, nor give up a run.
I really didn't care about anyone else they sent to the Pirates in the deal other than Roansy... thats a solid debut at AA for him. It wouldn't surprise me to see him in their rotation this yr
Yankees 2021 prospect thread.
I figured with the start of the MILB season today!!!!!!!!!! I would start the new Spec thread so we can put all the updates here.
Lets hope this is a great and healthy year for our specs and that we finally get to see Jasson and the rest of the quality young specs we have for the first time in a couple seasons.
We are absolutely stack with talent, throughout the entire system we our absolutely packed with power arms, some with incredible ceilings.
We also had alot of younger kids that were supposed to have taken giant steps forward.
I can't wait to see who all theses specs look and perform this yr
Awesome start to the minor league season. 8 k in 4.0 IP for Medina with 0 ER. 6 K in 3.2 IP for Gil with 0 ER. 6 K in 3.1 IP for Sauer with 0 ER. Marinaccio with 7 K in 3.2 IP and 0 ER.
On the hitting side, Florial and Wells homered. Hauver hit two Homer's! And Volpe had a great game. Can't ask for much more than we got.
Medina and Gil were dominate. In both cases the hitters were extremely over matched. Were coming up on about 20 months since Medina has shown his much improved command/control and he did it this winter against MLB level competition. If both Gil and Medina can continue anywhere close to this they'll both be top 20 by the AS break.. If they both continue to over match hitters like last night, I think we'll see them moved up quickly.
Austin Wells, wow. He really can hit. I know that they talked about him making the roster out of ST, if he keeps hitting like he has since day 1 in ST he may force his name into the MLB conversation.
Florial hit a bomb in his 1st AB, made a great catch and K'd twice.
How about Anthony Volpe? 2-3, with 3BB and a couple RBIS. I hated when the Yanks took this kid, it reminded me WY to much of the CJ Abrams, Kyle Holder picks. Avg sizes, HS SS without any plus long term tools.
From what I've seen and read Volpe took this last by adding 20+lbs of muscle and really worked hard to refine his tools. He's added arm strength, enough so that scouts feel like he could easily handle 2nd,SS and 3rd base defensively. That muscle he added also increased his bat speed and power. He's always been a really good contact hitter, if u add in above average to plus power he Rea could be a nice player
I've been told by multiple scouts that Volpe reminds them of a Bregman lite. A smaller guy that creates above avg to plus power, as he fills out, and is capable of handling both positions on the left side of the infield
We got pretty much everything we could have wanted to see from our kids last night.. I can't wait to see these guys keep performing...
I really believe we're going to see a handful of guys jump up to elite level specs almost right away. I also think we're going to see some big things from some of our kids 8n SS ball
DOTF 5/5
Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders
Must be nice to have Luke Voit in the lineup, huh? He and Miguel Andújar went deep as Scranton won its first game of the year, topping Syracuse 7-5 (box score).
Starting Pitcher: RHP Brody Koerner: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K — 28 of 51 pitches were strikes (55 percent)…solid debut for 2015’s 17th-rounder…this is his third stint in Triple-A.
In relief: RHP Kyle Barraclough: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR — brutal outing…gave up a grand slam to journeyman minor leaguer Jake Hager.
In relief: RHP Adam Warren: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K — restored order after Barraclough bombed…very nice outing, could certainly be a big league option at some point this season if needed.
In relief: LHP Trevor Lane: 2.0 IP, 3 K, zeroes — also threw three scoreless innings in spring training with the big league club. Very nice season debut.
In relief: RHP Brooks Kriske: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 WP, 3 K, — made the ninth inning interesting, but picked up the save.
Rehab Watch: 1B Luke Voit: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI — I know Aaron Boone said they’re going to be patient with Voit’s rehab, but he sure looks ready. Had two hits last night, too.
Miggy Mantle: LF Miguel Andújar: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, sac fly, K — Much better than last night’s 0-fer. Went back-to-back with Voit.
Leftovers: RF Trey Amburgey also chipped in a homer…DH Chris Gittens and 2B Derek Dietrich went 0-for-7 combined, but drew a walk a piece. Dietrich hit into two double plays…yikes.
Double-A Somerset Patriots
Somerset moves to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over the Harrisburg Senators (box score).
Starting Pitcher: RHP Shawn Semple: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K — 40 of 61 pitches were strikes (66 percent)…good work from 2017’s 11th-rounder.
In relief: RHP Jefry Valdez: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K — 21 of 33 pitches were strikes
In relief: RHP Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K — 13 of 19 pitches were strikes
In relief: RHP Keegan Curtis: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K — 15 of 26 pitches were strikes…picked up his first save of the season.
CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 2B, 2 K — Double just missed going over the wall for what would have been his second homer of the young season.
3B Diego Castillo: 3-4, 2B — Always has had good bat-to-ball skills, never having posted a strikeout rate north of 11.4 percent.
Leftovers: C Donny Sands went deep…2B Hoy Park and RF Michael Beltre recorded RBI singles. Beltre also stole a base. Park made a fielding error, his second already.
High-A Hudson Valley Renegades
Hudson Valley got its first win as an affiliate, 8-0 over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws (box score). Good pitching and plenty of offense, namely from Brandon Lockridge.
Starting Pitcher: LHP Ken Waldichuk: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 WP, 2 K. — 28 of 51 pitches were strikes (55 percent)…control came and went for 2019’s 5th rounder in this one…walked a batter in all three innings he appeared in.
In relief: RHP Barrett Loseke: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K — 29 of 46 pitches were strikes
In relief: RHP Zach Greene: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 5 K — 28 of 46 pitches were strikes…8th rounder in 2019 doesn’t throw particularly hard but has big spin rates, per FanGraphs.
CF Brandon Lockridge: 4-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI — Home run short of the cycle…Lockridge has some wheels and profiles as a fourth outfielder type down the road.
Leftovers: 2B Ezequiel Duran picked up two hits and a stolen base, but also struck out twice…SS Oswald Peraza went hitless, but walked and stole a base in his six plate appearances…DH Josh Breaux picked up a hit but struck out thrice…it was C Mickey Gasper, not Breaux in the video below.
Low-A Tampa Tarpons
What a slugfest. Tampa topped the Dunedin Blue Jays, 19-9 (box score). The Tarpons were down 7-0 after two and a half innings, mind you.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Harold Cortijo: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 7 R (6 ER), 5 BB, 2 K — 20 of 55 pitches were strikes (36 percent)…all seven runs scored with two outs in the second…outing ended after three consecutive walks, two forcing in a run…what a nightmare.
In relief: RHP Kevin Milam: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
In relief: RHP Trevor Holloway: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K — pitcher of record in this one…signed as an undrafted free agent last year.
In relief: RHP Shaine McNeely: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
In relief: RHP Carson Coleman: 1.0 IP, zeroes, 2 K
SS Anthony Volpe: 1-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, SB — Now has three steals in two games.
DH Austin Wells: 2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB — strong offensive start from last year’s first rounder after homering yesterday.
2B Trevor Hauver: 2-2, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR, 3 BB — three homers already…last year’s third rounder can really hit, though he was overshadowed by Spencer Torkelson in college.
CF Pat DeMarco: 2-3, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K — surprising power output from a guy listed 5-foot-9, 192 pounds. Was the team’s 17th rounder in 2019.
Leftovers: Everyone except C Carlos Narvaez and LF Juan de Leon had a hit in this one, though both at least reached base via free pass…RF Jake Sanford chipped in two hits and 2 RBI…1B Andres Chaparro notched 4 hits and 2 doubles…3B Chad Bell picked up a couple of singles
Pretty great start from Wells, Hauver and Volpe. Pretty impressive for those kids 1st taste of pro ball, especially considering they are starting in long season ball. Most top picks spend atleast a season in the SS leagues, so to see them get off to this kinda start, where they are is exciting
I absolutely hated the Volpe pick, he wasn't even ranked in the top 100 draft specs. Yeah its only been 2 live games but from what i've heard and read Volpe grew a little bit and filled out alot. He really worked hard this last yr to develop and refine his tools which scouts thought all were above avg but non were plus at the time of the draft.
I was told that they feel like he may eventually need to move to 3rd base because of better long term options at SS like Peraza. ect, but they feel like he will hit enough for 3rd base to be his best long term position. They are going to keep him at SS as long as they can because SS are always more valuable specs and hope he can stick at SS for as long as possible. According to what i've been told we might have a really good one on our hands and he's off to a hell of a start
I was told Volpe "grew up alot physically" over the last yr and has improved some of his tools to being plus or better. He was 2-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB, he had a double and a triple as he reached base 5 times last night and tonight he was 1-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, and already has 3 steals on the season. Pretty impressive start for a 20yr old in his first taste of long season ball. I will gladly hope that i was very wrong about picking him and he turns out to be a tremendous player for us.
Wells is definitely showing why the Yanks were so high on him that they drafted him twice. It pretty easy to see why there was talk of him making the MLB roster out of ST because the bat is special from the LH side. He has excellent bat control, barrels the ball very well and has big raw power. From reports he's looked drastically improved defensively, hopefully they were right about him not having access to a good catching coach and that was why he struggled with the fundamentals behind the plate. Also its why they are so confident that they can make him atleast league average or better defensively fairly quickly
Tanner Swanson, our catching coordinator, has spoken very highly of his work ethic, his desire to improve everyday and his improvements behind the plate. It will be interesting to see if they bring him along more slowly to work on him defensively or if he forces his way up the ladder by hitting at whichever level he's at. If he was in consideration for a roster spot in ST, you gotta believe with a good season he would be in the conversation to get a look at the end of the yr. He's off to a very fast start in Aball, you gotta wonder if keeps hitting like this for the next couple weeks if they wouldn't bump him up a level. It sure would be fun to see Dominguez and Wells batting in the same lineup at some point this is yr
Trevor Hauver was 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB with 2hrs last night, tonight he was 2-2, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR, 3 BB he already has three homers. Hauver was over shadowed in college and was forced to play out of position because his team had so many elite defensive INF. He has absolutely always had plus power and a plus hit tool but he's a tad undersized and the position was always the question coming out of college. He was thought to be a steal when we picked him in the 3rd round and so far he's showing what the Yanks saw in him.
You gotta wonder how long the Yanks will keep these 3kids at this level if the keep dominating. If i had to guess they'll probably be a little more aggressive with Wells and Hauver. than they will be with Volpe, because Wells and Hauver had some college ball experience, where Volpe was drafted out of HS
So far we've seen pretty much everything we could have hoped for in the 1st couple games. Our top pitching specs have dominated in their 1st outings, we've had several kids who tools have drastically changed since we saw them last, we've seen multiple of our lower ranked pitching specs show giant improvement stuff wise and our top draft picks are off to great starts.
Now we just need to see how some of our top young specs perform in the SS leagues and we could be well on our way to a drastically improved farm
Read today that Semple's velo improved to 93-95 this year with sick movement, plus he added a knockout slider. His performance in game one definitely looked like he had greatly improved.
I looked at Tampa's roster today and unfortunately I saw something I wasn't hoping to see. Montana Semmel is on the 60 day DL. So is Alfredo Garcia.
Thats really good to hear about Semple.
I really hope that whatever the injuries are to Semmel and Garcia don't cost them another yr of development.
I had both Semmel and Garcia as breakout candidates
Hauver just hit his 4th homerun in three games. What a start to his career!
Hopefully some of the IFAs break out this year because it looks like positional wise the organization is a bit thin. I'd bet on a hitter in the 1st round of the draft too.
What's the scouting report on Hauver?
Results
Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders
The RailRiders won a completely ridiculous game against Syracuse 17-11, improving to 2-1 on the season. 17 runs!
Starting Pitcher: RHP Deivi Garcia: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 7 BB, 3 K, 1 HR – just 32 of Deivi’s 72 pitches (46%) went for strikes…woof

One of Many Hitting Stars: LF Trey Amburgey: 3-6, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Bronx Watch: 1B Chris Gittens: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Leftovers: everyone with an at-bat, minus Kyle Holder (0-2) and Greg Allen (0-4), got a hit…the RailRiders had 17 hits and 8 walks and left 8 men on base
Somerset Patriots
The Patriots lost their first game of the season, falling to 2-1 in a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Harrisburg Senators.

In Relief: RHP Carlos Espinal: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K – 63% of his pitches went for strikes…faced 11 batters and got 10 outs thanks to a double play

Hot Hitter: 3B Diego Castillo: 2-4, 1 R – he’s now 5-11 on the season…also made 2 errors
Leftovers: Kevin Gadea gave up a run and Reid Anderson 2…Oswaldo Cabrera, Donny Sands, and Zack Zehner each logged a hit
Hudson Valley Renegades
The Renegades fell to 1-2 on the young season, with a 5-1 loss to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. Still, ‘Gades pitchers struck out 12 and mostly pitched pretty well, minus a disastrous, 4-run 7th inning that featured 2 walks, a hit batter, a sac fly, and a triple. That’ll do ya.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Hayden Wesneski: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K – 38 of his 53 pitches (72%) went for strikes…the 23-year-old retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced, with the only blemish a HR to the 2nd batter of the game…he still took the loss
In Relief: RHP Tanner Myatt: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 2 K – 21 of his 38 pitches (55%) went for strikes…the 22-year-old started the 7th, when the game got away
In Relief: RHP Nelson L Alvarez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, zeros, 2 K – cleaned up Myatt’s mess, but the damage was done…threw 60% strikes
Notable: DH Oswald Peraza: 1-4 – the 20-year-old SS logged his first hit of the season, making him 1-13
Notable: SS Ezequiel Duran: 2-4 – the 21-year-old is off to a fast start, 5-13 to start the year…all singles
Notable: C Josh Breaux: 1-4, HR – the 23-year-old catcher logged his first HR of the season
Leftovers: the rest of the lineup went 0-16 with 5 strikeouts, though they did walk 6 times
Tampa Tarpons
The Tarpons improved to 3-0 on the season, beating Dunedin 10-6. Their offensive rampage continued. Tampa is a great team to follow so far.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Randy Vasquez: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 1 B, 1 K – 29 of his 48 pitches (60%) went for strikes
In Relief: RHP Sean Boyle: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 K – retired 9 of the 10 batters he faced…threw 70% strikes
In Relief: LHP Edgar Barclay: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K –threw 60% strikes, but got hit around
In Relief: RHP Zack Kohn: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB – threw just 50% strikes
First Round Watch: SS Anthony Volpe: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI 2 K – the 20-year-old is 6-13 with 4 XBH to start the year, nice start to his first full pro campaign
First Round Watch X2: C Austin Wells: 0-5, 2 K – first hitless game of his pro career
Giancarlo Who?: 2B Trevor Hauver: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI – the 22-year-old is 8-10 with 4 homers so far…not bad…the HR was crushed
Hot Streak: RF Jake Sanford: 2-4, 1 R – the 23-year-old is 8-15 so far
Leftovers: Spencer Henson, Max Burt, and Elijah Dunham each had a hit…Evan Alexander had 2…every player had at least one run scored
Arizona State had four players selected as infielders in the 2020 Draft, with the Yankees announcing Hauver as a second baseman even though the Sun Devils' depth relegated him to the outfield in college. He posted a 1.007 OPS while batting primarily leadoff as a sophomore in 2019, then raked at a 1.189 clip while batting third behind No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson during the shortened 2020 season. A third-round choice, Hauver signed for $587,400.
A confident hitter, Hauver works deep counts looking for pitches he can drive. His strength and the loft in his left-handed stroke give him solid raw pop and produce high exit velocities. He projects to hit for average and power while also drawing a healthy number of walks.
Hauver's defensive home is in question, with the best-case scenario seeing him develop into a serviceable second or third baseman. He's a fringy runner with similar arm strength, so left field and first base are his only other realistic options. Comparisons for Hauver range from Daniel Murphy on the high end to former Yankees outfielder-turned-second baseman Robert Refsnyder. He also has gotten alot of comps to former Yanks farm hand turned hitting star Nick Solak
The Yanks might have gotten a steal here, especially if he keeps improving defensively
Has anyone else noticed the Yanks are having having Duran play SS in high A, after.only playing 2nd andn3rd to this point in his career?
Usually infielders have to move off SS as they go up the ladder not the other way around. It will be interesting to see if they plan on moving him there full time or if they are just adding to his versatility?
If he could play SS, with his bat, it would make him much more value
Based on the first couple nights we're seeing just about everything we could hope for to this point
Thanks Doc
Was Solak part of that Drury trade??
Solak has turned into a pretty good player. The scouting department never believed he could hit for enough power to be an everyday player... he makes tons of contact and gets OB at a pretty high clip, he'd be a really nice player to have on the roster. Then again when they traded him he was blocked by Torres coming off a 38hr season.
If Hauver can hit at the MLB level as well as Solak, we'll be very happy with that result
Florial is 2-2 with 2 HRs, 5RBI's, 1BB
Hauver concerningly isn't playing tonight. I hope its just a day off or that they decided to move him up a level after a scorching start
Tampa scored 25 tonight my god haha. Definitely concerning about Hauver not being in the lineup after just two games where they couldn't get him out.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Nick Green: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K – 30 of his 53 pitches (57%) went for strikes…he retired just 7 of the 13 batters he faced…rough debut for the 26-year-old
In Relief: RHP Nestor Cortes Jr.: 2.2 IP, zeros, 4 K – 64% of his pitches were strikes…dominant performance for the 2019 Yankee big leaguer
Rehab Watch: 1B Luke Voit: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K – the rehabbing Bomber was pulled before the rain delay…he is 4-9 with a HR, 2B, and 2BB in Scranton so far
Spring Training Hero: DH Chris Gittens: 1-1, 3 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI – weird but good line for the spring training exit velo star
Catching Depth: C Robinson Chirinos: 3-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR – nice night for the recovering Chirinos…he will be important depth for the big league squad
Leftovers: Greg Allen (2), Trey Amburgey, and Ryan LaMarre all added hits…the RailRiders walked 8 times and struck out 7
Somerset Patriots
Somerset improved to 3-1 with a dominating 10-2 performance over the Harrisburg Senators. Estevan Florial continues to mash home runs, adding two more today, while Patriots pitchers struck out 12 and walked 4.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Janson Junk: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K – 64% of his pitches were strikes, decent night overall
In Relief: JP Sears: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K – 60% of his pitches went for strikes
In Relief: Stephen Ridings: 2.0 IP, zeros, 4 K – 71% of his pitches were strikes…in 3 innings so far, Ridings has 5 K, 1 BB, and 0 hits allowed…not bad
In Relief: RHP Greg Weissert: 1.0 IP, zeros, 1 K – 88% of his pitches went for strikes
Florial Watch: DH Estevan Florial: 2-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K – a great night for Florial, who hit his 2nd leadoff HR of the season…could have been even bigger, too, but he struck out with the bases loaded
Bottom of the Order Madness: Thomas Milone, Michael Beltre, Zack Zehner, and Brandon Wagner went 8-15 with 2 2B, 4 RBI, and 5 BB from the 6-9 slots in the lineup
Leftovers: Oswaldo Cabrera, Diego Castillo, and Donny Sands were 0-12 with three walks
Hudson Valley Renegades
The Renegades fall to 1-3 on the early season with a 1-0 loss to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. The pitching staff was honestly great – they allowed just 1 hit and struck out 9 – but a few wild pitches did them in. Tough loss.
Starting Pitcher: RHP Jhony Brito: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K – the 23-year-old threw 75% strikes tonight and really mowed through the competition, even though his K rate was low…dominant performance
In Relief: RHP Charlie Ruegger: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K – 53% of his offerings went for strikes…tough loss for the righty, but a walk, a stolen base, and two wild pitches will do you in
In Relief: LHP Matt Minnick: 1.0 IP, 2 K – 62% of his pitches went for strikes
Hit Alert: LF Pablo Olivares: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Hit Alert x2: C Mickey Gaspar: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Hit Alert x3: 2B Oliver Dunn: 1-4, 2 K
Leftovers: a brutal night for everyone else at the dish…Oswald Peraza and Ezequiel Duran were a combined 0-7 with 2 K and a walk, though Peraza did steal a base…pretty lifeless otherwise, a few walks aside
Tampa Tarpons
Lol, the Tarpons beat the Blue Jays 25-10. They had 18 hits and 11 walks, with just 3 HR. Scoring 25 runs on 3 HR is honestly pretty damn impressive to me. Talk about a ridiculous game. They’re 4-0 on the season with the victory.
Starting Pitcher: LHP Ryan Anderson: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K – 60% of his pitches were strikes…but he got just 4 outs while facing 10 batters
In Relief: RHP Blane Abeyta: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 2 K – 60% of his pitches went for strikes…again, though, a Tampa pitcher struggled to get outs…Abeyta retired just 5 of the 11 he faced
In Relief: LHP Ben Keizer: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 K– 55% of his pitches went for strikes…he retired 50% of those he faced, but struck out 100% of those he got out…modern pitching, baby
In Relief: Michael Giacone: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K – 54% of his pitches went for strikes
In Relief: RHP Nelvin Correa: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K – 66% of his pitches were strikes
In Relief: RHP Carson Coleman: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 WP, 1 BB, 1 K – just 44% of his pitches were strikes, in a 15-run game in the 9th inning…not great
First Round Watch: SS Anthony Volpe: 1-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 SB – Volpe is hitting .412 in the early season
First Round Watch: C Austin Wells: 0-4, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 K – weird that Tampa scored 25 with just 1 hit from their top 2 hitters
Hitting Star: 3B Andres Chaparro: 3-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB
Hitting Star: 1B Spencer Henson: 3-3, 3 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Hitting Star: literally everyone else…Pat DeMarco had 4 hits, a HR, and 7 RBi…Max Burt had 3 hits and a HR…Elijah Dunham and Juan de Leon each had a hit
They should move Florial to AAA. One injury to the OF and he will be needed and he has already been in the big leagues before even if it was just for a game or two. Might as well see what he can do at the next highest level before the bigs.
Florial continues to impress at double A. Whats exciting about that is other than the ALT site he's never played above highA. The only thing that has been holding him back is his pitch recognition/ K%. He's hitting .333/.412/1.478 with 3hrs ,2 2Bs, 5RBI's, 2BB & 4Rs so far and reportedly was hitting over .300 with 6HRs during his time at the ALT site this spring.
He's been ready defensively for a while now but if he can continue to tap into his immense offensive potential, he could really impact this roster at some point this yr. Hopefully he can regain all his top spec shine that he has lost the last couple yrs he's still only 23
Anthony Volpe continues to look great and proving me wrong about being a terrible pick. He's looked really good defensively at SS and is hitting .462/.588/1.434 with more BB 4 than K's 2, with 5RBI and 3 SB so far. He's also close to 2yrs younger than the average player at his level. You gotta kinda wonder if Perza is still really struggling still in a couple weeks in High A if they might not swap them...
I'd love to know the reason Hauver didn't play tonight after being off to such a scorching hot start. We gotta hope its nothing serious.
Another exciting night on the farm, can't wait till the SS league starts so we can finally get a look at some of these IFA kids we've been hearing about the last couple yrs
Anyone know where Josh Smith and Anthony Seigler are for hitters and Vizcaino and Gomez for pitchers?
Day, thanks for posting the box scores and details. It's really cool.
So Florial has 4 hits this year? 3 HR and a Double?
The bases loaded K is what I would like to see him improve upon. Like we've said, with his speed, he has to get the ball in play. Pressure on the defense is always good.
