Sounds like they are changing it a from a gather and 2 and a half steps to a gather and 2 steps. And it's going to be a "point of emphasis" this year.

This could be interesting.

Lebron's going to shoot a record number of 3s.

Good, these travels on step backs and euro steps are getting out of hand.

I donít think anything will change. I hope it does but I think this will be like when they try to stop guys from yelling at the refs the first month of the season every 4 years

Yep, and it won't be applied to everyone anyways. Harden will continue to take 4 steps w/o a call for example. So will all stars

So will all stars

Iíve always hated superstar calls and will continue too. I get that itís an entertainment business but call the game the same across the board.

Says who? Creativity Added is always a good thing. Just because Harden and Manu take a more interesting 2 steps doesnt mean they should be penalized

Also speaks to Harden's legacy, the league needs new rules to contain him

Harden takes more than 2 and a half steps on both moves, it's absurd. Lowering it to 2 and calling it tighter, should make for a more even playing field.

Agree with others, I'll believe it when I see it. Traveling in the NBA has been a part of their version of basketball since at least MJ's retirement. I do think the league is interested in balancing their product more due to the fact that its watered down nature seemed to affect ratings a lot last year (they blamed it on Lebron being on a crappy team but that's just PR). I just don't think traveling is where they'll stake out their ground.

I expect it to get worse until they either revise their jumpshot rules, handcheck rules, or how they call the game in the paint for bigs vs. slashers. We're probably a few years from that. I think the jumpshot rules that were the final straw in this era of basketball came via a 'rules clarification' in like 2009 or 2010. If I were to hazard a guess I'd say they'll allow on-ball handchecking again in 2021 or 2022 - I don't think they want to allow off-ball handguarding again even though it's resulted in the very odd situation where the NBA is much less physical than college and Euro ball.

The league doesn't need a new rule to contain Harden - all they needed to contain him was the playoffs.

Let's just remove the requirement to dribble, it'll up the creativity.

I'm sure they'll blow the whistle more early in the year but I doubt it actually does much. The last thing the nba needs from an entertainment perspective is more whistles.

Honestly, traveling doesn't bother me a ton. If they wanted to focus on something, I'd prefer the focus on illegal screens. Feels like at times the pick and roll is virtually impossible to defend with the types of screens they allow guys to set.

How would you write the rules for screens?
