Peak offseason type of thread right here guys:

The very best of the best is pretty much agreed upon, take the list of the greatest Centers for instance. We all pretty much agree that tier 1 follows some order of Wilt, Russ, Walton, KAJ, Moses, Hakeem, DRob, Shaq and some might even be crazy enough to add Ewing to that list. But where do guys like Rik Smits rank? Vlade Divac vs Arvydas Sabonis types of debate are never had. Let me see ur personal rankings on these players(feel free to only rank players you feel comfortable with);

CENTER:

Brad Miller
Rik Smits
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Vlade Divac
Tyson Chandler
Dwight Howard
Robert Parish
Dave Cowens
Pau Gasol
Dikembe Mutombo
Ben Wallace
Alonzo Mourning
Brad Daugherty
Willis Reed
Nate Thurmond
Walt Bellamy
Wes Unseld

Feel like these guys don't really belong anywhere near the rest of the list

Vlade and Brad Miller were a bit before their time and we're excellent passers. Smits could ball too. Big Z was an All-Star and Chandler was a DPOY so I feel like they belong. Maybe towards the bottom of the list but they belong for sure.

If Unseld was a bit taller he would have been a beast. But I guess you can say that about a lot of players. Its just crazy that he was a 67 C

I feel like there are a lot of PFs back in the day that could be sick centres today. Like Rasheed Wallace

From the list Dwight Howard seems to stand very tall there. A 20/10 guy who played great defense and led his team to the Finals? Not bad. Alonzo is up there, but IDK if he was quite as good as Dwight. Willis Reed deserves some serious consideration. Went toe to toe with many of the greats (Wilt, Kareem, Russell) back then.

Unseld, Reed and Cowens were all MVPs. That has to give them a leg up.

Yeah prime Dwight was pretty beast!! Who was the 2nd best player on that magic team, Nelson ? Hedo?

Not to mention Unseld was ROY, season MVP, and Finals MVP. Went to 4 finals and won a championship

Just doesn't feel like they need to be apart of this conversation. The other 10+ guys are fair game though.

Was Jermaine O'Neal considered a C? Had a dominant prime before the injuries. Always underrated.

While true, they won MVP awards at a time when the players voted for MVP. If we had that today, we'd have had a lot more AI, Rose, esque MVPs.

Wes Unseld gets crazy overrated in most NBA conversations. Dude was a damn good defender and a phenomenal passer and rebounder, but he peaked as a rookie and won MVP that season in one of the worst MVP seasons in NBA history. At quick glance, there's at least seven guys on this list I would easily rank ahead of him.

I've been wanting to post in this thread for a while, but haven't had time to really dive into the numbers and accolades this week, but I definitely see these guys ranked by tiers with Reed at the top on his own, guys like Cowens, Parish, Gasol, Zo and Dwight under him, defensive specialists like Thurmond, Mutombo and Wallace under them and then two more tiers beneath those guys.

If I find a good half-hour later in the week or this weekend, I'll come in here and try to break down this list a little more thoroughly.

One of my favs back then, an underrated defender even up to his Miami days. I know overall hes prolly played more Center, especially as he hung around to watch the league get smaller BUT smack dab in the middle of his prime, it was basically a 62-38 proposition that he played more PF.

Lets just include him for the sake of the thread, where would you rank him? I'd imagine above most here

I love the kind of front courts of old when Artest-Brad Miller-J Oneal could be a viable trio. We'd be hard pressed to see something like that moving forward.

I think it would work even today so long as they gave Brad Miller the kind of role Adelman did. He had a sweet set shot from mid range that Im sure he could stretch abit further today (though I understand not all midrange guys had it in them). Jermaine O'neal is a bigman but I feel like he used to be athletic enough to stay in front of smalls.

Yeah Pop could make something like that work as he is experimenting around LMA in the front court. True, the possibility of it working is there, but it seems the ideal front court nowadays doesn't have as much beef and longs for a true stretch big. The thinking nowadays is one of Brad or Ron need to extend and be a consistent threat from range.
