View Full Version : Where do you rate/rank Nate McMillan?

I remember when his time in Portland came to a close, people were highly critical of him (though the team falling apart didn't really seem to be on him).

When Indy brought him in, the attitude seemed to be they let a good coach go to bring in an inferior one; however, the results have been good. They are ranked ahead of Philly in the standings with far less talent (at least with respect to name recognition), and they have pulled out five-game win streak without Oladipa (who McMillan has helped turn into an all-star).

McMillan was also highly respected when he left Seatle and it was a rare situation in which a coach wasn't fired, but rather hired away in a bidding war.

So, where is this guy as a coach? How does he rate compared to great like Pop, former winners like Carlisle, Spo, and Doc? Or top tier coaches liek Steven? Or more divisive coaches like Thibs and Casey?

Ill always remember him as the fiestiest PG defensively, what he and GP did to opposing backcourts is literally historical in how they forced turnovers.

And the fact that PG's seemed to hate being coached by him. I had a similar thought about how Brandon Roy couldn't do what Harden has with CP3. It was a different era but I remember him hating that Nate put the ball more in old man Millers hands than the likes of Steve Blake.

If the Pacers stay in the playoffs and make it to like 2nd round then he deserves to be in the convo for COTY

They only need to win 5 games to get over .500, which is good enough for the playoffs in the east, so that's pretty much a lock at this point (the 7th and 8th seeds are currently under .500 in the east).

It's a question of whether they can keep home court advantage at this point.

COTY does not include playoffs. They're all regular season awards except finals MVP.

There are a ton of great candidates right now:

Nate McMillan - Pacers
Kenny Atkinson - Nets
Dave Joerger - Kings
Mike Malone - Nuggets
Doc Rivers - Clippers
Mike Budenholzer - Bucks
Pop - Spurs

Any of those coaches has a legit argument IMO
