View Full Version : What's wrong with the City of Cleveland?

With the ECF history of the Cavs coming to an end, I can't help but remember how Dan Gilbert wrote that scathing letter when Lebron FIRST left Cleveland.

Though Gilbert was butt-hurt, he had some merit in his anger.

There is however no merit in their local media's trolling the best athlete in Ohio sports history, Lebron James. This article wreaks of malcontent, pettiness and hate.

They're even throwing a parade based on a shove in a L.A. club. TT doesnt even hang out there in the off season

https://twitter.com/BenAxelrod/status/1027565126344429570/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.prosportsdaily.com%2Fnba %2Fnba-rumors.html

Not to mention, Cleveland is now becoming the landing place for castoffs (Rodney Hood, Kevin Love, Channing Frye,) and losing type weak minded basketball players (See the "rumors" for Hassan Whiteside).

I really feel sorry for Cleveland since their city has probably the worst (or 2nd worst) reputation in the country and it appears things will only be getting worse for Cleveland basketball.

What gives? Is there something about Cleveland that makes people blindly hateful and disloyal?

Has anyone ever lived there that can speak to their loser mentality? What's wrong with the city of Cleveland?

Edit - or maybe the online edition was always different. Probably not.

You'd have a point (about hate and disloyalty) if we didn't also idolize dudes that show love. Guys like Jim Brown, Joe Thomas, Joe Haden, Austin Carr, Larry Nance Sr, Campy Russell - are treated as gods here. Hell, fans went crazy over getting Channing Frye back, and have an intense love for Richard Jefferson. Josh McCown is BELOVED here - you wouldn't believe how many fans here love that dude.

I get your point, though. From the outside perspective, it looks bad. But from the inside perspective (born and raised in Cleveland) I see what the fan-base is really all about. What most outsiders see as hate and disloyalty, I see as passion.

A lot of it petty - sure, can't argue with that. It's a petty fan-base for sure. But there's a reason why 1.3 million showed up to our parade.

Hope that answers your question, assuming you're not trolling. ;)

I'll never forget going to a concert in Cleveland in 2014 and people were literally starting chants for Johnny Manziel. I think with regard to football they have a strong following even though they literally are laughing stock of a team year in and year out (which is respectable, I hate bandwagon fans). I live in Pittsburgh so Cleveland is regularly the butt of sports jokes, but Cleveland (and Ohio more as a whole) has always had this connotation of being a flat boring place.

Good insight. My VP use to live in Dayton (he’s from LA) and he said he loved it. Idk there’s just something about Cleveland. I just can’t figure it out other than they’re incredibly bored like you were saying..

Toronto is a beautiful, amazing freaking city though. Cleveland was dubbed: "The Mistake by the Lake"

The past few years (thanks to the casino and LeBron) have seen massive improvements, though. It's getting better.

Yeah, being a MN fan, we share similar deals. We never win haha, stars come and go (mostly go), and fans end up so passionate about their team, they get riled up when a player leaves. Small market, cold winters, and just not super big spots for athletes to plant and stay.

KG, could commit murder here, and nobody would rat him out. Kirby Puckett is a myth at this point here. Prince? gtfo if you make fun of him haha.

Remember the homer hankies?

My friend took me down to the dugout in 86 and I met Tom Bernansky, Herbeck, Gietti, Pucket, Gladden etc. I was a little kid and I was asking each player if he was better than Tom Bernansky. I’d always pretend I was Tom, and my friend would pretend he was Gladden when we played wiffle ball, especially after Gladden hit that grand slam. Dude became a legend after that.

Cleveland fans are 100% loyal. To their team. They care about their teams so much that when someone chooses to leave, it feels like a break up. I saw the same thing with a lot of Pacers fans who dumped on Paul George when they were cheering him 2 months earlier. And yet they were EXTREMELY upset when we traded Danny Granger, not because we didn't get much back but because we traded someone they were attached to. Cleveland fans are just that invested in their teams.

Try being a Browns fan.

Cleveland has the same issue that Pittsburgh, Detroit, Erie, Buffalo have.

1 - Weather from the lakes: It sucks.
2 - They are the rust belt. Industries that relied on blue collar hard nosed low paying jobs. Those jobs have lessened, so there is more unemployment, but at the same time the price of tickets for all this stuff has gone massively up.
3 - Along with point 2, it's taken a long time to have new industry come into those cities to replace them. The replacement industries have pushed out the blue collar types that used to go to the games, and they have turned it into a much more 'event' to be 'seen' than an escape from real life.

I was looking at the market to buy in Carlsbad and there are studios with 500 square feet that are going for 550k. The only thing you find in 450 range is going to be a very very old condo that's 1-2 beds and 1-2 bath at 1000 square feet.

That example is well north a million in carlsbad as well.

I know you aren't lying. San Jose is terrible (not quite San Fran but close enough). I sold a 1700 sq foot, 3/2 with a fenced in yard, for 141k in 2014 in Houston, and the house was updated. That same house in Long Beach is 850k. That same house in Minneapolis is 280k. That same house in San Fran is 1.3 million.

Love ur way to trash Cleveland here. You are a real tough guy. You are more then welcome to attend the Thompson parade and ask this question to the fans first hand. You know, instead of trashing people you don't know and a place you never been over the internet.

I'll entertain ur questions and concerns because im very bored at work.

1. I also believe Gilbert Had merit for his anger. I had no issues with his Letter. He was upset that a guy he did everything for embarrassed him and the entire state on national TV. Lebron has also admitted many times that he screwed up.

2. Writers jobs are to write articles that catches peoples attention. Clearly it worked lol. 99% of the articles you see from Cleveland that seem like insults are jokes. I saw one that said "Lonzo ball and the Lakers visit on nov. 21st". These are light hearted jokes. enjoy life man. you care way too much.

3. Fans are throwing a parade so what? why can't people have fun and enjoy life? Are they hurting you or ur family in anyway? does it have any effect on ur life in anyway? Green is a giant piece of crap of a human being. I mean he went from party to party talking crap about TT and his wife. Not to mention everything he says and does on and off the court.

4. How is Kevin Love a cast off? thats stupid. Hood? Channing Frye is like 37. hes just a depth player lol. Whiteside has issues but don't act like hes not really good when he wants to be.

5. Don't feel bad for Cleveland. We feel bad for you. the amount of hate you have is alarming. chill out a little, enjoy life and have some fun. you take things way to serious. I'm not sure what you mean by rep. city itself or the sports teams? Lets keep it sports related no reason to be an A-hole and go after a city. Not like Cleveland is the only place with crime. Indians have a very good rep. Browns are getting much better and seem to be in the right direction. Cavs were just in the finals. Lost Lebron so they will try to rebuild like any other team.

6. Disloyal? you know the browns went 0-16 and browns still sold out games right? you are looking at maybe the most loyal city and fan base in sports. hateful? If so you should move here lol, fit right in i guess.

7. I think you can speak much more when it comes to a loser mentality.

I just looked up some zillow prices and I was wrong. MY BAD!

More like 160-180 in the really bad neighborhoods you don't want to raise your kids in. 260-300 in the really good suburban areas. For 2500 sq ft

Still a great market.

My wife is usually the one spending hours window shopping for homes and finding some great places in great areas for around 170. Usually they're ranch-style and about 1900 sq ft.

12,500/month in mortgage. Who can afford that?

Again, here is what you get in THE best area of the twin cities for that

This makes me sick. I just sent these listings to wifey (who refuses to stop being ripped off here in the bay area). Its time for us to get the hell out of CA. if we're ever going to create real wealth for ourselves.

These listings are dope, I like both for different reasons.

If sell a house in the Bay Area, you can probably retire in the midwest already.

Pretty cheap here. Maybe 120-130? The cost of living here is great, even in the suburbs outside the city.

Wow, what kinda rent do they pay out there for that?

Hope that answers your question, assuming you're not trolling. ;)

That reminds me of us real laker fans much respect.

Nothing I said was disparaging. Cleveland does have the reputation I mentioned.. even the movie "Major League," plays up to the Cleveland Stereotype... You guys even get it from hollywood..:hi5:

The bold is an example of, "trashing someone you don't know." :laugh2:

Kevin Love is a castoff because he's an afterthought in the hierarchy of NBA players with his kind of talent. (And he wanted to stay in Cleveland!) WTH No one is giving Cleveland a chance despite the fact that they still have Love.

You were trashing the city and fan base. Major leagues was about an owner who wanted to move the team so they signed a bunch of scrubs. (at least who they thought were scrubs). great movie.

Dramond went between 2 different parties following TT around say crap about him and his wife. Plus everything we know about him. it's easier to say hes a sh** bag then stereotyping millions of fans.

Cavs still have Love yes, but umm, warriors? lol. This league is built around super teams. I don't see how anyone would think cavs have a chance. Unless cleveland has a couple young guys turn into stars and injuries hit warriors, rockets and Boston.

I been to CA a lot for work. Trust me i ran into some of the worst areas i have ever seen in my life. LA has a lot of nasty areas. So does miami, NY, Chicago etc... Every major area lol. Just a fact. I never understood bashing Cities in sports forums. I only did it above to prove a point.

Cleveland just doesn't have the Nightlife these athletes want. Thats all. Cleveland don't have strip clubs out the butt, ocean beaches etc... Just like most places. So bigger markets have an advantage. Is what it is.

I just don't understand why these athletes risk everything like they do. If i had that kind of talent you would never catch me at night clubs, bars etc... Just not worth the risk. Some girl accusing me of assault, drunks starting stuff, drugs. na im good. I'm making millions. Many other ways to enjoy life.

I spent a week in Cleveland doing work at the Cleveland Clinic. Granted, I was staying in the nightlife area close to the Q and the Rock and Roll HOF, but Cleveland felt like a very hip, modern city. Ate at Michael Symon's Lola restaurant and a microbrewery who's name escapes me atm. Granted, I'm a midwest boy born and raised, so it's not Cali but it's definitely livable.

It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Most are just trying to take shots (rather unsuccessfully) at Cleveland. But because people are ignorant, it's a thing.

There is nightlife, it's just not as extensive as a place like New York. You could get lost in New York's nightlife and experience something new every time. Cleveland is more like, "Well if you want this, go to East 4th. If you want that, go to the flats. If you want this, etc..."

I prefer to be inside usually anyway. Give me a party with 8-10 people playing tabletop/board games, watching sports, and drinking over dancing in a middle of a bunch of strangers at some nightclub. I'm married and 31 - my extreme party days with tons of bar/club hopping are mostly behind me. Maybe a couple times a year.

The microbrewery was the Butcher and the Brewer. Fantastic bone marrow. I also stayed in Philly for a conference and preferred Cleveland immensely, aside from the cheesesteak.

Didn’t mean to portray that. I’m not angry.

But you can’t call the front page story on PSD a troll thread.

And if GSW fans want to get mad, then that’s fine, but they are the ones being sensitive to real news with a made up thread. I mean that’s what it is.

This thread is trolling because of another thread that was taken from the front page of PSD. Is PSD website trolling GSW fans? All I did was echo the PSD front page. I didn’t go looking for dirt on GSW. I honestly did not think GSW would take offense to Dray getting “two pieced”. And yes “two pieced” was the direct quote on PSD’s front page.

I think what you are missing here is it is not always the OP that makes a troll thread. The original thread you are talking about was legit, though had every intention to be a troll thread. What made it be shut down was all the posts that followed. Wade03, arguably the biggest troll on this site, brought his A+ troll game to that thread and forced it to be shut down. Scoots gave it multiple pages of pure bs trolling before shutting it down, but the thread ran its course.

This thread absolutely was created to troll and could have been shut down immediately, but the responses were actually interesting. A Cleveland fan actually responded to the thread honestly instead of trolling back and many others responded in the same way. The thread went weird ways' as in the housing market, etc, but was mostly just discussion and not back and forth trolling. I think it is the responses that made the difference in both the threads you are talking about. I see no hate in this thread to shut it down, even though that may be why it was originally started.

I think everyone is different, and are interested in many things, and I don’t believe any thread should be shut down for trolling. There is trolling in every thread, and that just gives any person the power to get a thread shut down. Erase posts if you feel you need to, I’ve seen it done many times.

If im reading why you posted this correctly, then I gotta say, its not just median home value that makes this market terrible, but the lack of inventory and value that you get when you want to pay less than the median.
