Since this one is so obviously Bird, I'll take another posters idea (sorry for the lack of credit, don't recall who said it) and why don't we all post our top 5 in order?

1. Bird
2. Dantley
3. Wilkens
4. Hawkins
5. Lillard

Bird is an interesting draft story by the way. He would have been number 1 or 2 mixed with Magic, but he played another season with ISU and Red said he wouldn't pay him more than any other Celtic and the Celtics didn't know if they would be able to get him to sign.

Now we have new rules because of Bird lol

it sucks that these threads havent generated much debate, most draft slots have a best pick

as for top 5

1. Bird
2. Dantley (for now Lillard on Pace to take this spot)
3. Lillard
4. Wilkens
5. Hawkins

This one probably doesn't need to be a poll, lol. Bird by a mile

It's actually a little crazy to me that, with a pick as high as 6th, the second best player all-time is Adrian Dantley. Aside from Bird, he's probably the only other guy drafted at this spot who's worthy of being in the top 100 all-time conversation.

I thought the same thing.

This pick is pretty weak historically, compared to just one slot above it at 5. I'd say 7 is just as strong as 6, maybe even 9.

You'd think there would be more legends popping up at 6, but there aren't, they are almost all consolidated into the top 5, minus a few guys like Bird, Curry, Dirk, Kobe etc.

This is a good exercise to showcase how valuable those top 5 picks are in a draft. Even though there have been a lot of really good players in these polls so far, Bird and Kobe are probably the only two players in these polls thus far who would pop up in top 10 all-time discussions. And aside from them, Dirk, Dr. J and Curry are probably the only ones who would pop up in a top 20 all-time discussion.

That means 75-80 percent of the top 10-20 players in NBA history were drafted in the top 5. And I bet if we looked at the top 100, that number would still probably be around 60-70 percent.

ever see the 82games link for "expected output by draft slot"? I don't think it was updated after around 2008, but it shows evidence of your claim.

Yup, and I would say at least 8 of the top 15 all time came in the first selection.
