Pop is one of those guys who speaks to how life is bigger than the game. And he's right.

I hope fans in general understand if he chooses to take time off for this.

It's such a shame... he's really seemed to be so happy these last few days when he does interviews, despite how frustrating the season has been.

GREATNESS ONE

So sad... His wife has been ill since the 90's, and wasn't able to participate in many things with him if she were healthy.

Danny Green thought she was getting better/stronger when she was able to travel with Pop last summer, so he was a bit surprised by it.

All the best to Pop & his fam. They mean so much to SA

Pop's carefully constructed circle to ward off the smallest shred of self-importance begins with his wife, Erin. The daughter of the late Air Force Academy athletic trainer Jim Conboy, she's the one who last summer convinced Pop to cut out his sideline tantrums over errant calls. "She'd point out other coaches who screamed and yelled and say, 'Do you want to look like that?'" Pop says. An added dividend: His team now argues with officials less often too. And he knows when he comes home from a game that she'll give him her succinct take-"You lost your momentum in the third quarter"-offer him a turkey sandwich and chips, then turn his attention to family matters.

No cameraman or reporter has stepped foot into Popovich's house for the obligatory coach's home-life feature. Erin rarely attends games and has declined every interview request since her husband became Spurs GM in 1994. Owner Peter Holt wanted to promote him for Coach of the Year honors two years ago. "I'll never forget the look of horror on his face," Holt says. Popovich recently became the Spurs' all-time winningest coach but insisted the team ignore it. Surrounded after a recent 112-85 win over the Sonics, Popovich noted that some reporters were hovering over his podium. "You're breaking the plane," he groused. "That's a two-shot foul. Why do I even have this thing?"

And why, as the Spurs players danced around the Madison Square Garden floor celebrating their title in '99, Pop was busy arguing with security guards to get Erin and his two kids, Micky and Jill, onto the court. Then he pulled his family into a tight circle and thanked them for allowing him to do his part.

You don't get too many cracks at the ultimate wife material. I don't know how pop manages this, if I were him I'd want the playoffs over with but we all got jobs to do
