JJ Redick has agreed to a one-year, $23 million deal with the 76ers, league sources tell ESPN.

what??????

Mr. Baller
07-01-2017, 04:13 PM
why is that?

JJ gets a big pay day. Sixers keep future financial flexibility when they need to pay Embiid soon, and gives them much needed shooter and veteran presence. Redick fits into that starting lineup beautifully.

Good move for PHI. Allows them to explore a big FA next year while Embiid is on a cheap cap hold.

This deal doesn't make a ton of sense to me from JJ's point of view unless he just wanted to get a big one-year pay day and then try his luck again in free agency next year. For Philly, he can provide some much needed scoring and shooting from the back court, but it's not like they're close to being a legitimate threat in the East. But he'll eat up some of their cap room in the short-term, and maybe they can convince him to sign a longer deal a year from now.

You are gonna see a lot more of this into the future... teams will pay a lot for 1 year but not in terms of multi year deals ... Reddick is worth 3/54 but he can probably sign 1 year deals and make around 62 over the same time

The old sign a long term deal for the security becomes less relevant because of the sheer amount of money available in a given year...

The sixers are trying to do it big this offseason. At least they are going for it. The only problem for them in the foreseeable future is the health of Joel. Also with Ben Simmons I don't think point guard was the way to go but overall the right moves have been made.

A very good signing from the Sixers perspective. They desperately need a shooter to open up space for guys like Embiid and Simmons to be at their best. Did they overpaid for Redick absolutely but its only a 1 year deal and he's a good locker room presence to mentor their young players.

Closer to competing than you think my friend. The East got a lot weaker over the last couple weeks after Butler/PG trades. No reason to think the sixers can't compete for the 4/5 playoff spot next year IF Joel and Co. Play most of the season.

Plus they have to get to the floor otherwise they are paying that money regardless. Least they got a difference maker.

Covington can't extend until November and Embiids extension will get done near the deadline.

Even then, with JJ taking a 1 year we could have max space again next offseason even with Embiid and RoCo getting raises.

this is all sixer fans have wanted... He is without a doubt a picture perfect fit for our team and a damn good player... I figured he woul get 3 years plus 60 mill... I love that it is a 1 year deal... the sick thing is we needed to make this move and pick up this player that is a perfect fit just so we get to the salary floor... superb move from Colangelo... Sixers will be a top 4 seed in the east next year but a team that will give the cavs trouble mark my words.

Also YO... Free agents dont want to come here... JJ turned down more from 2 other teams.

I like it for both sides. Good JJ getting paid. He can go ring hunting next year. The Sixers had money to burn and he should be a good fit. JJ was never one of my favorite Clippers. It's mainly because Doc gave up Bledsoe to get him. JJ was a Free Agent. Bledsoe had WAY too much value to trade for Redick and Dudley imo. Oh well. JJ was good for The Clippers. I don't hate him for getting paid and glad The Clippers weren't the team to do it. Hopefully Embiid can stay healthy. I look at him as more of a guy you'd be lucky to get 31 games from than a guy that's going to be healthy. Even without him Philly is probably a playoff team.

Only reason they signed Redick to that contract is to reach the cap floor which is supposedly mandatory. Its like when they traded for Jason Richardson just to hit the cap floor. That's why they over paid to convince Redick to sign a 1 year deal instead of a 4 year deal.

J.J. Redick shot 44.0% from 3pt range in his 4 seasons with the Clippers. Steph Curry shot 43.4% from 3 in that span

Redick also has shot better than Curry from 3 in each of the last 2 seasons. 47.5% to 45.4% in 2015-16 and 42.9% to 41.1% in 2016-17.

depends on the city... melo when he signed his 123 million deal he was taxed 21 plus mill. Its why i find it stupid that players are def going to big markets... you leave a ton on the table signing with a free agent team over staying with your team if you are a top player on top of being taxed massively by LA/NY/Phila/Boston etc... if i am a top free agent i am going to the raptors or heat lol.

Players are taxed based on where the games are played and how many days they are in the state where the game is. If a player signs in a state with no tax they get the 41 home games plus how many games the play opposing teams in that state. So someone signing in Houston gets 41 +2 at SA +2 at DAL or 45/82 of the salary with no state income tax. If the player arrives in LA on a Monday, plays LAC on Tuesday, LAK on Thurs, SAC on sat and WAR on Monday and fly out Tuesday they pay 7/365 of their salary to CA state income taxes. Every state is different rate and rules.

For simple math they pay at most 41 games to the different out of state plus playoffs. If LBJ is in Cal for other business, nike or film appearances, he pays tax for those days as he is considered working in the state.

These guy's need very good accountants that can minimize their tax liability as best they can.

Usually works out well for Bos/NYC/Philly teams because when they go on road trips they typically spend about a week or two in places. Yes Cali's big tax hurts, but when you knock out all 4 Cali teams in 8 days, it's nicer than 4 different visits. Ditto for when they visit Texas the other way. Playing Houston, SAS, Dallas over s stretch of 5-7 days helps out because the teams typically stay there.

With what cap space?

If the Thunder want the best chance of keeping George and/or Westbrook, they need to buy out Kanter's contract. He's up the same time as George, but that's risky, waiting until the last minute to find another star to pair with your two superstars.
It doesn't matter how much it costs. Just pay Kanter his money and be rid of him. Redick's spoken for, but without Kanter's contract and with some additional trades, they could foreseeably add another star.

The Clippers should push for Philly to allow this to be a S&T. I wonder if they'd do it for a 2nd Round pick. They could create a $23 million Trade Exception. They could then essentially sign any player in free agency as long as that team is willing to agree to a S&T. They would have to use some 2nd round picks and maybe even the 1st from Houston to make it happen but it could turn out to be very worthwhile. If they only use the tax payer MLE in free agency they'd be able to go well above the tax again.
