Alright, so what would your all-time starting 5 look like if you couldn't choose from the generally accepted guys who usually appear on the top 10 ever list.

Can't choose:

Magic Johnson
Michael Jordan
Kobe Bryant
LeBron James
Larry Bird
Tim Duncan
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Wilt Chamberlain
Bill Russell
Shaquille O'Neal
Hakeem Olajuwon

So without being able to pick from the above, what would your best starting 5 look like?

I went for small ball lengthy defenders who could easily fit into a system.

I'll build a modern one as well, in accord with whim (and what I know better). If I'm facing a small-ball rather than post-up team, replace Dwight with Durant. I feel like Wade, Paul, and Durant really have the talent to be top 11... Definitely on Kobe's level in prime play. And the inside/outside, drive/dish, 3pt/passing, and defense up and down would be formidable here. But anyway.

Went with Stockton and Drexler over Payton and Wade for shooting purposes. Was tempted really hard to choose Kawhi, but Pippen has the respect of total body of work. I didn't go with older players because it's harder to envision them without seeing them play a whole lot.

My GOAT big 4 will do but then.. when you have the:

-the two best scoring duos of all time
-the two greatest lock down defenders of all time (top 3)
-the two greatest defensive centers of all time (top 5)

-arguably the best clutch pure shooter of his generation as your sixth man (Allen)

-and a phenom like Anthony Davis, assembled on the same team --you'll end up wondering if you'll ever have to worry about the guy taking the last shot. The opposition is always in for a total annihilation.

It depends. If you use the rating scale from the Wade vs Pippen thread you'll see Pippen is the better defender and rebounder so Pippen > Wade Jordan and Kobe. Not sure how guys rank people these days.

Yeah. I've come around hard to Kawhi lately, but this hard is kinda crazy.

I also think all the Stocktons and Stephs over the POINT GOD is a bit weird. I get it, but CP3 truly is gonna go down as the most underappreciated player of his era, and probably many eras before.

Got better regular season and post season numbers than those two, easily. Especially Stockton. I get Curry because his skill set is different...but Stockton over Paul is as far as I'm concerned just flat out wrong.

You only need so many scorers. Kawhi is the PERFECT complimentary piece. 2 DPOY and a legit 3 point threat that can play within a system? Why wouldn't you pick him.

I mean I could have

I actually love that so called system players have the kind of value that we would choose them here. Yet for some reason we devalue them when ranking players individually. I hate when people tell me Draymond would suffer if he were forced to carry the offense when I would never grab him to carry the offense on his own. He would definitely be a key contributor to my offense. I honestly think people overrate the ability to create your own shot to such a degree, they insist on forcing this dogma onto others when its not that simple.
