Hope the starters can go 8 and hand it to Kimbrel every night otherwise continue to throw our hands in the air blowing late leads wondering how it all got so drastically terrible with this bullpen.

Porcello with another good game. Started off a little rocky but he's been pretty solid. He gets the ball in my opinion if we have to play in that one game elimination game

Hard to argue their, but if Farrel didn't completely ruin Wright for the season, it's tough not to hand him the ball with a return to his pre injury forum.

Since his July 10 start, Price is 5-2 with a 2.81ERA, 67.1IP/56K/15BB. He's got to be in the conversation for a WC play-in game. I would not mind seeing him get the start and then having Porcello get games 1 & 5 of the ALDS and Price likely in game 4.

I understand the Holt can play several positions, but does he actually play any of them well? his play in LF has been comical this year.

He's always been quite trustworthy at any position but for whatever reason, he's gradually gotten worse in the outfield. Not sure why...

I don't know about you guys but I won't be unhappy if Travis shaw is not our third baseman next year

Nice to see Leon stand there and stare at 3 straight strikes when you're looking for a base hit to tie / win the game.

Stick a fork in em. The talent is clearly there, they just can never put it together for any stretch of time when you have "that" bullpen constantly holding you back.

Same old story more nights of the week than not it seems lately.

Pathetic. End rant!

We are literally the 2013 Detroit Tigers right now.

Farrell is so unbelievably bad in how he manages the bullpen it is unreal. Koji, Kelly, and Hembree will make a difference. Everyone hates on the perspective but Koji and Kelly are going to be X factors in September

Moncada's time is now. Live and learn or die trying.

Ellsbury in 2007.
Bogaerts in 2013.

Regardless of the bullpen woes, he can still give a spark to a position clearly in need of an upgrade.

What I miss are the walk offs. Drought June 23rd against CWS. Usually see Ortiz the ones that would walk off.

Top Players that are cooling down August

JBJ: 111 AB: .176 Avg/.257/OBP/.324 SLG/ .581 OPS

Shaw 72 AB: .167 Avg/.250/ OBP/.292 SLG/.542 OPS
--------------------------------------------------------

Players I like to see called up

Call up:

C. Dan Butler: Last 10 games he's batting .419 464 Avg/.545 OBP/.643/SLG/1.188 OPS

CF Castillo .351 AVG/.398/OBP/.500/SLG/.898 OPS

Butler is playing well but I can't see him getting the call over Hanigan and Vazquez.

I think Wright's shoulder is not the same. 2nd time around since his DL and wasn't good.

Thank you Farrell for killing our best pitcher (by ERA). He's literally destroying the team day by day. Should've fired him early in the season and we'd probably be leading the division.

Okay, maybe a slight overreaction but it's so frustrating.

Yup. Hanigan is on rehab and the signs point to the team waiting for roster expansions to activate him. DD already called out CV by name when asked about callups so he's pretty much a lock. Butler is, IMO, AAAA material.

It's just unbelievable, really. So many bad decisions that game -- Ortiz getting the start was the domino that set all this in motion. I would seriously hope that the end-of-year analysis puts Farrell on the hot seat. I'd be happy watching Torey take over.

Please DFA TAZ NOW!
Why was he even given an opportunity? While Ziegler kinda sucks with inherited runners, isn't that the spot to try to strike out the RHB? One K shuts down that opportunity.

I took quite a bit of heat for suggesting the Sox pursue some offense at the trade deadline due in part to the relative costs of pitching and available hitters. I don't intend to re-open a particular debate over the moves that we made but still felt like a multifacted approach would have been best.

As they prepare for their final game of the month, the Sox are averaging 4.9 runs per game in August Ė well off their early-season pace, though still a solid fourth in the American League. That said, the three-run yield they achieved on Tuesday has become relatively commonplace in recent days, at a time when the struggles of players like Xander Bogaerts (.218/.269/.300 in August), Jackie Bradley Jr. (.176/.257/.324), and Travis Shaw (.167/.250/.292) have made it difficult for the Sox to sustain their top-to-bottom offensive bulldozer of the seasonís early months.

The Red Sox were held to three or fewer runs in just 15 of their first 62 games (24 percent). Theyíve since been limited to no more than three runs in 29 of their last 70 contests (41 percent), including 13 of 29 this month (45 percent) and four of their seven games in the past week.

Manager John Farrell has talked at times about how the Red Sox continue to create scoring opportunities and simply havenít cashed in with the same frequency that was evident early in the year. Thatís not entirely accurate, either.

Through 62 games, the team had a .357 OBP and averaged 11.4 plate appearances per game with runners in scoring position; over the last 70, the team has a .344 OBP while averaging 9.7 plate appearances per game with runners on second or third base.

The difference may seem subtle, yet in some ways, itís been the distinction between an elite offense and one that is more accurately characterized as very good. And with that transformation has come a magnified exposure of shortcomings, particularly in the bullpen and especially in the eighth inning.Speier

In Triple A Pawtucket, Rusney Castillo is closing out what is arguably his best month of his pro career with a rash of strikeouts. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Tuesday, his fourth multi-whiff game in his last nine. Still, heís hitting a robust .351/.398/.500 in August.

In Double A Portland, Moncada went 1-for-4 with a walk and steal. Moncada now has 13 walks in his last nine games, a sign that heís once again taken control of the strike zone in a way that characterizes him at his best.

...

In short-season Lowell, righthander Josh Pennington had his fourth straight strong outing, permitting one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. In his last four starts, the 21-year-old has a 1.57 ERA with 17 strikeouts and six walks in 23 innings. Extra-base machine Bobby Dalbec had his third straight two-hit game, going 2-for-5 with a double to boost his season line to .376/.425/.675 with 21 extra-base hits in 31 games.Speier

Here's a quick fact that I read today on NESN:

Red Sox have lost 19 games this year when leading or tied after 6. Tied with the Atlanta Braves who are 49 - 83, good for the worst record in baseball.

If there's any chance in salvaging a real WS run, it's time to cut our losses with Tazawa & (A)Bad and shake things up drastically in house. I think Kelly & Owens, despite having control issues, couldn't possibly be any worse. When they both start, they usually get torched the second or third time around the opponents order, so throwing them in the pen to face 3+ batters could be magic.

Let the 40 man rosters begin...

At this point I doubt that they cut bait with anyone. There's simply no need. They can keep Taz and Abad, get them mop up duty or whatever, and use some of the more successful callups (Hembree, Kelly) in 7th inning roles.
