Red Sox announce they have acquired super-utilityman Michael Martinez from the Indians for cash. Martinez, 33, has played 2B (48 games), 3B (41 games), CF (40 games), LF (29 games), SS (24 games), RF (14 games) in his big-league career. Switch-hitter was batting .283/.306/.383 in 32 games for Cleveland. He's a .199 career hitter. To make room on 40-man roster, Red Sox DFA infielder Sean Coyle.Lauber @ ESPN

Another head scratcher IMO. Switch hitter who hits equally poorly from both sides of the plate (.193/.251/.283 vs .210/.228/.248). Add ~ .070 to the numbers for this year which, I guess, is a good thing.

Do you think these two minor moves indicate something bigger on the horizon. We can't afford to wait we could be cooked by Aug 1. I predict this team will looking different first game back from all star break. Thoughts?

This coupled with hill almost makes me wonder if Holt/Hernandez are being involved in a bigger move

Why is he added to the 40 roster? Marco was doing just fine.

I can only guess that it's because he has more experience (something that DD alluded to) and positional flexibility than Marco.
