He hasn't had any 5 game suspensions, right? So it wasn't pot.

Steroids?

The only other player I know is Chris "Birdman" Andersen for cocaine. But he came back and won a championship with the heat

I mention 5 games because the only 5 game suspension for drugs is pot. So if he gets a 5 game, you know what it's for.

I know right...

The irony is this will probably cause him to smoke/shoot whatever he's using even more.

If it was steroids of PEDs, it's be a smaller suspension (I think 10 games then 20 then a year ban or something).

But this was listed as a drug of abuse, which means recreational, but something stronger than pot. Brownstone. Crystal. Charlie. Something like that.

I think the sad thing here is that if a player has an substance abuse problem and that problem is alcohol, the league gets them help. If it is cocaine, they kick them out of the league. I understand that one is legal and one is illegal, but when people have substance abuse issues, they need help, not punishment. If this was a PED, I'd understand, because it violates the spirit of the game, but a recreational drug does not. I don't see the need to be so harsh about this.

In addition, I hate the owners put these rules up, but don't have to follow them themselves. If owners think that players should get kicked out for snorting powder, so should the owners. After all, this is about the league's reputation, obviously not the health of the players (otherwise they would be offering support instead of punishment). If an owner is using them, it's just as bad as if the players are using them with respect to the reputation of the league.

Don't feel too badly for him. He could be a really hot commodity in Europe. Play fewer games and get paid likely more per game (though less overall). He can stay in game shape and come back.

This is crazy though, because somebody could conceivably have a drink spiked of something and get this suspension

The league DOES try to help ... but it's kept private. He has failed to follow the program multiple times to get here. Let's hope this is rock bottom and he doesn't go lower.

If he has been smart with his money, he shouldnt have a problem not making any income for 2 yrs.

The timing absolutely sucks but all he can do now is wait. Work on his game, stay in shape and hopefully the NBA allows him to return.

At first this sounds terrible. But at second, why not tour the world for 2 years and play overseas? Sounds sweet.

Was there ever a bigger drug related suspension ?

Ok so let me get this straight --

OJ Mayo gets banned until 2019 for abuse of a recreational drug.

Tom Brady gets banned 4 games for deflating footballs.

And Sheldon Richardson gets suspended 1 Game for evading police in excess of 143 mph, while endangering the life of a child, other people on the road, and himself.

OK got it -- This all makes sense now
