12.5 mil/yr is a bargain in this day and age.

Not a bargain... A steal.

Good contract. If he keeps improving, he's going to have a lot of value.

Great signing and glad he is back. The Lakers are still idiots though. ****ing Mozgov. Hope we play alot of small ball next year.

Could end up being the best signing (over $10 mil a year) of this summer.

Glad he was taken care of early so no team got crazy ideas to give him the 4 year Arenas deal.

His trade value went up as well with this contract.

This is almost his max I believe. Except he gets up front money so the time value of money comes into play. Due to the Arenas rule teams could only extend him offer sheets with MLE money in years 1/2. Then they could go up to big salaries in years 3 and 4. I beehive I read his full max would have been about $58M, but like $48M of that comes in years 3/4. On this deal, he gets less total money, but received it evenly throughout the 4 years so he actually gets more up front. He took a discount for that short-term security. And with the time value of money that discount is partially eaten into as well.

I don't think Clarkson is a good player, and idk if he'll ever turn into one, but this is a really great contract to find out.

I am not really sure how to gauge the salaries being given out the last year. I do think teams aren't fully understanding what these deals for rotation/starter players will end up doing to them later on. Clarkson needs to end up a plus starter for this to make any sense.

by next year 2017/2018 this is the equivalent of a $7 million deal in 2015/16

Although in general I agree with your premise that there will be some awful deals signed and there will be a price to be paid this is not one of them

so this is essentially the MLE. Then yes, it's not bad at all.

I heard the Lakers could have given Clarkson as little as 6 million per due to having his rights or something, but nice to see they didn't lowball him. He's hopefully gonna be a good player.

Six million this year and next, but $23m years 3 and 4. He would have gotten 6 only if he signed contract with another team and Lakers matched.

Solid I guess. I'd rather play him as a PG if I could get away with (i.e. had a wing or forward primary ballhandler) but he's 2nd best in a dynamic backcourt where he shares duties. Didn't really watch too many games of his but he's a solid role player from what I saw.

Solid move that shows faith in his growth with the core on top of it being a great value
