Catcher Christian Vazquez was in Boston on Thursday's off-day and will officially re-join the team for Friday's series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, a baseball source confirmed to the Herald.

Coming back from Tommy John surgery he underwent last April, Vazquez was doing very well at Triple-A Pawtucket — he's 6-for-13 with seven walks in five rehab games — and manager John Farrell indicated earlier in the week Vazquez' return was nearing. Boston Herald

This is surprising, we're not even 10 games into the season. The management is not playing around. You suck, you don't play.

The Red Sox took more steps to reshape their roster on Friday. Catcher Christian Vazquez was officially activated off the disabled list and infielder Marco Hernandez was recalled from Triple A Pawtucket.

Catcher Blake Swihart, who started six of the first nine games, was optioned to Pawtucket. Outfielder Rusney Castillo was optioned to Pawtucket on Wednesday night.

Vazquez, 25, has not played in the majors since Sept. 27, 2014. He missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery. Vazquez was 6 of 13 with seven walks in five rehab games with Pawtucket.

Vazquez played 55 major league games in 2014, hitting .240 with 10 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs. He threw out 15 of 29 base stealers.

The Sox believe Vazquez’s advanced defensive skills can make a difference with their struggling rotation. He was listed in the starting lineup Friday to catch righthander Rick Porcello.Boston Globe
