2:12pm: Dipotoís Boston contract doesnít prevent him from pursuing another teamís GM job at any time, FOX Sportsí Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter link).

1:20pm: The Red Sox have hired former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto on a interim basis to assist in the teamís offseason moves, Peter Gammons reported during an appearance on the MLB Network (hat tip to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe). Dipoto is ďa consultant for now,Ē according to ESPNís Jim Bowden (Twitter link), and was hired by Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington.

Dipoto has longstanding ties to the Red Sox organization, as he worked as a scout for the club in 2003-2004. Itís yet unknown if this job could be a precursor to Dipoto being hired on a full-time basis by the Sox if things go well this winter, or if it truly is just an interim gig until Dipoto lands his next permanent job.

Dipoto rather surprisingly resigned as Angels general manager last month following a series of disputes with manager Mike Scioscia and the coaching staff. The breaking point seemed to be how the Angels coaches used and implemented statistical information for scouting purposes, which shouldnít be an issue in Boston given the teamís long-standing embrace of sabermetric principles. Dipotoís controversial exit from Los Angeles didnít seem to hurt his standing within the game, as he had been widely expected to soon catch on with another club in some capacity.

... This reminds of an inexperienced doctor looking for a second opinion from a much more experienced doctor who actually knows what they're doing. Kind of interesing, but I hope it doesn't cost us Betts, Bogaerts or E-Rod when all is said and done.

Yeah I'm not sure how I'd feel if he came in, suggested a whirlwind of moves giving up potential big pieces to our future, then gets a permanent job elsewhere. I like the idea, and your doctor analogy fits the bill.

It's about time we shook things up. As some have stated, we haven't had much sustained success since Theo left.

Dipoto, the Angels general manager from 2011 until he resigned in July, will be tasked with evaluating talent within the organization and providing assistance in offseason planning. As the Red Sox are trying to makeover a franchise that appears destined for two straight last-place finishes, theyíll need an emphasis on acquiring talented pitchers. That just so happens to be the strength of Dipoto.

Dipoto, 47, has slightly less experience as a major league general manager than Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, so this shouldnít be perceived as a move from higher-ups to help strip Cherington of control. Instead, the Sox are bringing on a former Red Sox scout (2003-04) who knows Cherington and is said to have his trust, which might be the most important factor.

ďHeís come in to review our system, our big league club,Ē Farrell said. ďI know itís an objective view to be brought in and give feedback, information to Ben, his assessment and recommendations going forward.Ē

Dipoto helped the Angels acquire starting pitcher Andrew Heaney (2.45 ERA with Angels) from the Dodgers for second baseman Howie Kendrick prior to this season and starter Hector Santiago (3.30 ERA with Angels) from the White Sox in a three-way deal before the 2014 season. The Angels built a staff that ranked fifth in the American League with a 3.66 ERA as of yesterday.Boston Herald
