Panda broke up a DP going pretty hard at their 2B in the second inning, the HBP, which was close to the head, was probably in retaliation to that.

Orioles fan here, but I'm watching the Capitals playoff game and there are people blowing up on Facebook and Twitter. What's your announce team calling it?

The Red Sox giving Rick Porcello that big contract was a big mistake.

Would be nice to have a manager that keeps his players on short leash and not leave them out there!

Red Sox starters' ERA is now 6.24 this season, worst in MLB.

Lucky to be in 1st.

Anyone want to explain to me why Farrell continuously does not pull starters when they are getting shelled. Absolutely abysmal in game manager. How many times does this have to happen?

He learned from Francona when he was manager. Yanks Girardi has his players on a short leash

You want him to have a quick hook. Our BP will be fried by June. Since our pitchers are not pitching well the BP would have a lot of innings

It's always the same with Farrell regarding starters. He doesn't pull them fast enough.

4 runs on one hit that inning

and Napoli got his first RBI of the year, with a bases loaded walk.

I agree with the response but for a VERY different reason that the intent of it. Most fans want a quick hook because they like to manage games as if they existed in a vacuum -- completely isolated from the games before and after. Neither Francona nor Tito (nor many other managers) act that way. Farrell probably took into account that his BP has already thrown considerably more innings than any other in MLB (roughly 50% more than the same point last year). I also found that Tito managed for the season in a way that Farrell also does; he'd make or refrain from making moves during the season in a way that left us scratching our heads specifically to get a player to perform under a certain set of circumstances... and then see the same guy step up under similar circumstances later in the year. Porcello needs to be able to get outs when he doesn't have his best stuff. He also needs to get up to the 110-120 pitch count. Pulling him after 5 innings and 90 pitches doesn't get him where he needs to be for the rest of the season.

Putting the game in context helps: he'd had two consecutive scoreless innings and seemed to have righted the ship a bit. The possibility of getting one more innings was not outrageous even if you think it unwise. Should he have been pulled earlier in the 6th? In retrospect, yes, but the inning progressed too quickly. He hit the first batter on the first pitch, got a first pitch bunt single, a first pitch line-drive single, and then Jones' bases-clearing double on the second pitch (sixth of the inning). Going for a talk to Porcello before Jones' PA might get a few more warm up tosses but, really, nowhere in there does it seem like there's a lot of time to get a reliever ready. On a day when he didn't have his best stuff I guess you might have a RP going from the beginning of the inning but even then it seems likely that you're expecting more than six pitches in the inning to get him into the game.

I'll chalk it up to bad timing and bigger picture decision making. If he is able to manage like Tito later -- who seemingly made all the 'expected' moves in the playoffs, got key contributions when he needed them -- then I'm okay with losing a few games during the season for stuff like this.
