Some highlights:

The Sixers’ 20-year-old rookie is a lanky strand of sinew with a Big Daddy Kane flattop, a limited offensive game, and some of the most stunning defensive numbers ever posted by someone of his tender age. Not only does Noel lead all rookies in rebounds, blocks, and steals, he’s also the only NBA player in the top 10 in both blocks (eighth) and steals (10th). That’s not, you know, normal.

...

Advanced metrics support the eye test. Noel’s Defensive Box Plus/Minus ranking is second in the NBA, his Defensive Rating is eighth, and, according to SportVU player tracking, opponents shoot only 45 percent at the basket against him, which places him in elite rim-protector territory. The Sixers surrender 99.5 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor — which is slightly better than the Rockets and Blazers, the third- and fourth-best defenses in the league. He’s the primary reason Philly’s defense has jumped from 27th last year to 12th this season — and it plunges back down when he leaves the hardwood, according to NBA.com.

I bolded my favorite sentence.

I mean the article isnt wrong. He is a defensive specialist. everyone knew that and has to polish his offensive game. No doubt he is an above average rim protector. Pretty sure everyone knew this when he was drafted.

Confused if youre mocking his play or if your boasting him up.

I haven't seen too many sixers games this year but I'm impressed with the way he's defending the rim. His blocks are incredible. He destroyed Tony Snell's attempt at the rim and had him second guessing whether he wanted to take the ball back into the paint during the rest of the game.

Scary thing is, he's going to get better and if he can improve his free throw shooting and possibly either a jumper or a move in the paint, I think he's going to be an all-star in the future.

I agree with your post except for that fact that a #6 overall pick with injury issues should never be expected to come in his rookie year and dominate defensively like this. He's been phenomenal.

How funny is it that a player can make it all the way to the NBA and regular fans watching will say "if only so-so could add a jumper or a move." Like what has that guy been doing that he got all the way to this and still doesn't have it? Take LeBron. Dude was the #1 overall pick and put up monster numbers from day 1 but it took him years to finally get a reliable jumpshot.

He's certainly deserving of ROY contention. His play recently has been phenomenal. Aside from the elite block/steal rates, his scoring and rebounding has been way up too since the beginning of the year. I still think Wiggins will win though.

I didnt believe the hype before I read the article, but it's legit.

I still take Wiggins because of the load he's expected to carry as someone who didnt turn 20 until February, but Noel is more impressive than I thought he was.

Both have holes that need to greatly improve. Wiggins still needs better shot selection at times, and he needs to be more aggressive rebounding and playmaking.

Yeah as someone mentioned in another thread Noel is top 10 in the NBA in

Steals per game
Blocks per game
Steal%
Block%
Defensive Rating
Defensive Win Shares
2nd in Defensive Box +/-

He's having a historically great defensive season for a player his age.

If he continues his recent play he could be one of 5 players in NBA history to post 2 spg and 2 bpg in a season.

He's got A LOT of work to do on offense as most of his makes are from dunks/putbacks, but defensively he's a special talent.

People aren't wrong to bash Nerlen's offensive shortcomings though.

He should be shooting higher than 44% from the field.

A large factor in his low percentage is he takes shots that he shouldnt be taking. I don't want to see tricky left handed hooks or long 2's out of the kid but he puts up those shots because the Sixer's have nothing to lose this season. I am encouraged by his increase in FT% though (He was shooting 50% FT from the stripe in the first two months, and now he's shot 68% over the last two).

But that's why having Joel Embiid waiting in the wings will only help Nerlens in the future. He's got range out to 3 point along with stout post moves so we'll be relying on him to do most of our big men scoring.

Nerlen's should just be doing the dirty work and getting most his points on 2nd chance opportunities and easy dunks.

I can't wait to see what kind of damage they can do on the defensive end as a duo though. That could be special.

Did any of the reports about Embiid's weight issues concern you?

I wonder if the sixers would want our pick for Noel ;).

Would be a perfect compliment to a scoring big like Vuc. I'm sure Hinkie would love to trade him for a future 1st.

Haven't followed him much since he stunk the first few weeks and I had to let him go in fantasy. Now he is posting really good numbers and I'm stuck with Loul Deng.

lol nah. those reports were proven to be false. he's been working out prior to every game and he's looked great in all of them. my sig is from a week ago. if he really weighs 300 pounds and can pull off dunks like that then hell, i say keep the "weight".

Wishing we had taken Nerlens Noel at number 1 overall INSTEAD OF ANTHONY FREAKIN BENNETT

That's simultaneously a really nice compliment and a slap in the face.

This is what I wish. Unless we get the number 1 pick, I would absolutely be for trading it to Philly for Noel. He's EXACTLY what Orlando needs.
