View Full Version : GM Revision: Select a player from each draft - 2003

Okay.

I am doing something similar in the MLB section, but I am going to provide a different twist here.

The set up is as follows, you are a GM, and you know the past history of every player up to today. But you get to go back in time, and pretend you have the 16th pick in every draft, and you need to assemble the best roster that you possibly can.

Anyone that was in the first 15 picks does not count. You have to choose the best player that will fill your roster correctly and try to build the most competitive team possible. Remember, players must be able to play the position that you assign them to and must have played multiple minutes in multiple appearances at that position in the NBA to qualify for that position.

Here is how it works:

We are starting in 2003. The first fifteen players are already off the board, and you have the 16th pick, in real life Boston took Troy Bell. But you get to have the privelege of hindsight and get to select whoever you think will help you build the best possible roster.

When you finish, and get to the 2014 NBA draft, we will see who we believe would have the most competitive roster assembled. Note, you can take someone that was an undrafted free agent as well, like a Jeremy Lin, but you need to take him in the year that he would have been drafted, for Lin that would be 2010. I will post up to 29 possible selections, and you can select an Other, but please tell us who you would have taken.

Each poll will last 5 days, and then we will go on to the next year.

just brushed up on some of the draft history and Al Jefferson and Kawhi were both drafted at fifteen....damn :sigh: haha gotta go with starting Korver considering all of the other drafts lack forward depth after 15 and he's developed pretty well as of late.

Does anyone know how we can find win shares by team? I.e. Basketball reference will show the individual players win shares, but I want to see, for example, last seasons totals for each team when accounting each players total on the roster.

Because I am curious to see, when we finish, how this team in total win shares would compare to the other teams in the league

Very close to what I was going to go with. I had korver as starter at sf and green as backup pf (would likely play some sf too over ariza on my team if that is considered?). I think the defense in that first unit is great so the drop in defense between korver and green wont be too big of an issue. I like having an elite shooter with that group though.

Then instead of having taj Gibson since green is backup pf I have Teague (2009) as my backup pg and Bledsoe as backup sg. This makes my team not quite as big man heavy as listed. I think this makes it more flexible and prepared for injury (what if Lowry gets injured?)

Honestly not sure that's much of an improvement but that's what I came up with going through the drafts.

I would suggest doing two years per thread, like do '04 and '05 next. Or do this twice a week, because once every five days will drag it out too much.

Well, WS is based on a players contribution, I think what you are looking for is adding the WS for a particular team that season?

Honestly if Korver wasn't an option I think I would have taken Diaw. His passing ability for his position is criminally underrated.

Even with hindsight, it ain't really easy. It would be nice to have a few years where we could pick two guys as long as at least one was a 2nd rounder to fill out the squad. There are definitely years where I really would have liked to have two guys.that would be available.

I think that is the point. We have to decide. I haven't peaked ahead at the draft classes yet to see who I'll have to choose between, should make this pretty fun.

This but with Rondo instead of Lowry. But meh I guess Lowry would be the better option since Rondo is not that great offensively.
