View Full Version : Are Folks Sleeping on the Wizards?

This team seems like it can match up with anyone in the NBA. At 9-3 and after going toe to toe with Dallas and destroying the Cavs, I'm surprised more folks aren't talking about Washington.

Wall is playing at All Star level. Beal may be on the brink of stardom this season as well based on his play just coming back from injury. Paul Pierce was an upgrade over Ariza at the power forward position. Nene is a brute down low and can hit the open jumper. Gortat is a top 10 center who runs the pick and roll well and grabs boards.

The bench is pretty deep with Andre Miller a savvy vet pg who can score, Garrett Temple a long 6-6 SG who disrupts on defense, Kris Humphries who has been playing extremely well and was an upgrade over Trevor Booker, Otto Porter who plays smart and is proving not to be a bust, Kevin Seraphin a bull down low with nice post up moves, Rasual Butler who has been deadly from 3 point range, and a couple of banger hustle big body goons like Drew Gooden and Dejuan Blair. Add to the fact that Martell Webster another 3 point specialist will be coming back from injury and this team is deep at just about every position.

I do think they need to work on their rebounding, but it seems they have the perfect fit of young guys/veterans and everybody's on the same page. They play very aggressive on defense because Randy Wittman is a defensive minded coach. Toronto is the only real threat out of the East I see. The Wizards destroyed Chicago last year in the playoffs and adding Gasol this year doesn't change that much for them. Let's face it, Rose won't be playing a full season.

What would stop them from getting to the finals?

Simply put- yes.

They've had an easy schedule so far but they are playing good defense as a unit. Not sold on their offense outside of the back court and maybe Gortat.

I think they have as good a chance as anyone in the East at this point, we'll see how that changes.

Maybe but I just don't see any team in the east beating a team from the west in a 7 game series for the championship.

Yes and No, people were projecting the Wizards to be a top 4 team in the east, just above the Raptors. They're playing pretty well, however, I would take the Cavs, Bulls, Raps, and Heat over the Wizards in the playoffs.

Yes, they are definitely being overlooked. They would be a tough matchup for any east team come playoff time.

The Wiz are dangerous.

John Wall is coming in to his own and there isn't really anyone who can stop him when he's at full speed.

Bulls are still the consensus #1 seed but between now and April who knows how many of those Chicago players are ready to go by then.

They are one of 4-5 teams that could come out of the East. Matching up well against Chicago makes their situation really interesting as I think Chicago are still the front-runners to come out of the East. They are a pretty impressive group when healthy.

I would take the Raptors, Chicago and Cleveland over them in the east if the season ended today.

11-24-2014, 05:47 PM
They are a lot like the Raptors... only not as good!

The only thing I disagree with is Pierce being an upgrade over Ariza, but I also believe that most thought they would be one of the top teams in the East.

id like them to feature gortat a little more in the offense.

I just ultimately struggle believing in any team led by Randy Wittman.

All the talk is about a healthy Bulls, a sync Cavaliers and a complete Raptors. With Rose still an injury-risk, Cleveland's poor defense and the Wizards having arguably the 2nd best back-court in the league (with Beale not hurt of course), they have the potential to make a run in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

I think they are pretty much where people expected them. Cleveland is struggling and Chicago are running into injury problems. People had them in the top 4 with the Raps and the above mentioned teams.

One thing though is Pierce is not an upgrade over Ariza nor do either of them play Power Forward with the exception of Pierce doing it in a small ball Nets lineup last season.

they are expected to be in contention to be one of the top 3 teams in the East....its just that there aren't that many Wizards fan on this forum i guess.

I would like to see a Raps vs Wizards ECF. It would solidify the new era of the NBA. Just like a Grizz vs Dubbs WCF.

11-24-2014, 09:43 PM
Don't think anyone is sleeping on them. They have a good shot at the ECF for sure.

They were projected to be top 3-4 in the conference by most in the preseason (except maybe Heat fans, who are projecting their team to take the division). I think they are where those people expected them to be and I believe they are one of the few teams in the East that realistically have a shot at making the Finals.

Wouldn't say people are selling them short, but I will admit both Chicago and the potential Cleveland may achieve are still getting most of the attention as contenders in the East, more than the others anyways (Toronto, Washington...maybe Miami as well).
