SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Jazz signed a 5-year-old, free-agent guard to a one-day contract for a special scrimmage Monday night.

JP Gibson, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, signed his contract with Jazz president Randy Rigby before joining the team in uniform for the annual preseason intrasquad scrimmage at EnergySolutions Arena.

JP was joined by his parents, Josh and Megan, and his 2-year-old sister, Elsie. The family was hosted by the Jazz and photographer Jon Diaz's "Anything Can Be" project, which creates storybooks for children with cancer about their dreams and wishes.

JP, wearing a No. 1 jersey, even got to play in the scrimmage. He was passed the ball and dribbled into the lane, where center Rudy Gobert lifted him up so he could dunk and slap hands with some players as fans roared.

Love it! Classy move and that kid was stinking cute. I love feel good stories about kids they deserve it! Rudy teaching little man how to throw it down!

Clearly you have a great sense of humor

Laughing at anything about a potentially dying kid isn't funny in my book. Sorry.

Lol well then... that's a lighthearted comment that doesn't poke fun at the kid in the slight

Would rather tell the kid straight up that he's dying? Or would you say something lighthearted and uplifting. What if that kid pulls through, becomes a basketball prospect, thinks back to the scrimmage, and lightheartedly says that as well?

I just don't see where you get all defensive like that

I think he is a 5 year old kid with cancer, that's why he is offended.

Edit: REDACTED. Arguing over a joke will just take away from the point of the thread.

They didn't extend him to another contract?

I thought you had to be a year removed from Highschool to enter the NBA. The ambiguity of the league makes the rules very confusing.

Kid was getting way too many star calls out there. Traveling like Dwayne Wade

The kid is taking it like Lebron, he's signing a short term deal and will look to get a max deal once the salery cap rises with the new TV deal.
