View Full Version : CBS: LeBron James officially going back to # 23 for cavs

MagicBucsSox

The last time we saw LeBron James in a Cleveland Cavaliers' uniform was 2010. He was wearing No. 23 when his Cavs lost to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The next time we see LeBron James in a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform will be in October. He announced on his Instagram account he'll wear No. 23 once again after spending the past four years in No. 6 for the Miami Heat. He had this message on his Instagram photo:

23 it is! It's only right I go back. 2∑3=6 We still family 6. #HomeTeam #StriveForGreatness
The math checks out too. I'm sure they're already available in the Cavs' team store.

Apparently the entire league retiring 23 out of respect for MJ is no longer important to him. This is LeBron backtrack number 74475656377465746628.

As others have pointed out. This is from 2009

"I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon," said James, who has worn 23 since he was a high school sophomore. "There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn't Michael Jordan first.

"He can't get the logo [Hall of Famer Jerry West's silhouette adorns the NBA's logo], and if he can't, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it."

Now it's fairly obvious he just said that to prep going to the Heat where 23 is retired.

More bad news for the people that bbq'd their old "23" jerseys.

That BBQ you're smelling is all those fair weather Heat fans burning #6. Didn't they all say 4 years ago LeBron should play wherever he wants? Pot meet kettle.
It's good news for Cavs fans because they don't need to buy new jerseys, seeing most of them DIDN'T burn their jerseys.
Btw little fun fact after LeBron announced he was returning to Cleveland, 300,000 people stopped following the Miami Heat twitter handle. :laugh2:

bleedprple&gold
07-27-2014, 01:55 PM
I think he wants it to feel like he never left. Personally I'm not a fan of players wearing two different numbers on the same team. Then you get into the whole debate of which number to retire like we will have with Kobe and I don't think any player deserves to have two numbers retired. I have no problem with this. And 23 should only stay retired for the Bulls.

How does winning in 2006 help them win next year? How does winning in 2013 help them win it next year? Here's a hint, it doesn't. Wins in 2013 nor 2006 don't count for wins in 2014-15.

Presence of Lebron on your team>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Past history

Lebron's presence trumps history of a winning organization. Bulls had no winning history. Enter Mike, 8 years later and six rings later they have a winning history. Jordan's presence trumped there past history. Pipp and Phil played there part, but Mike could of gone to at least 10 teams and won a ring with there roster. Probably more. Him and Drob on the Spurs......10 rings.

It's about principle.

You can't be the one, high on the pedestal, with your chest out and bossing everyone around in the league and telling them what to do and what not to do.

YOU SHALL NOT DO THIS........

UNLESS YOU ARE ME! UNLESS YOU ARE THE KING! UNLESS YOUR IDENTIFICATION CARD SAYS LEBRON JAMES!

This is the whole ordeal. Just because you self anointed yourself as the King and everyone watching you your "WITNESSES" doesn't mean you tell people they can't wear a certain jersey #, and then you go back to doing the same thing.

It's not about Jersey Number. Get that thru your thick skull. It's not about underwear, or botox, or cheese, or tables or dental-appointments.

How come no one talks about the disrespect MJ shows for everyone? How about when MJ said James wouldn't be a star before James ever played a game? If you don't know what I'm talking about, then don't post. You're just proving your ignorance by replying back without the simplest use of google. In short, Lakers Phil Jackson gave Odom his black card so the team can hang out and create camaraderie. While everyone was together, Kobe alienated himself. This was during Odom, Pau, and the championship crew days.

I bet you guys are the kinda guys who would be all starstruck if they met LeBron in person as well.

"Yes Mr. James I'm your biggest fan, can I have an autograph? You're my favourite player"

All sucking up and **** and then talking some of the finest **** ever behind your keyboards about his parents, real classy.
your response is just as childish

i dont understand...if he wants his own legacy why is he wearing 'jordan's number'
surely you would want a different number to make that number iconic to you?!?
Exactly. That makes sense to me. That's what makes people great, not just putting up great numbers

Yeah pick his own number. Kobe picked his own number in #8 and #24, MJ in #23, Russell in #6, Kareem in #33, Magic in #32, Hakeem in in #34.

Was Shaq wrong for wearing #32 and #34 then because previous legends had made it their number? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A NUMBER.

Are people really gonna say because he wore the same number as Jordan it tarnished his legacy? Like seriously? Let the guy wear whatever ****ing number he wants.

The fashion he said it (much so emphatically), the incoherent ranting about changing his number, blah blah blah.

THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE ARE SICK OF LEBRON JAMES!! The backpedaling, the flip flopping, the manipulation of situations and certain things to get everything in his favor, the hypocrisy.

NO WE ARE NOT!!!!!!!

We're talking about sticking to promises (especially when you state is so emphatically and passionately, telling everyone else that they shouldn't wear it as well).

We're also talking about the "respect to MJ" theory that HE HIMSELF BROUGHT UP!!!!

It's what LEBRON SAID! Why Even bring up MJ's number. HIs whole plan was to go to Miami, the only non-Jordan franchise that sentimentally retired the #23. He knew he was going to South Beach, wouldn't be able to wear 23.

It's the BS of LeBron James. It has nothing to do with changing a jersey number. It has nothing to do with what MJ thinks. It's the constant 11 yrs of flip flop and hypocrisy and disloyalty that come out of Bron's words and actions. The "keeping the 2014 free agency hostage", the 2010 Decision, the Indecision of the number, telling others not to do something and he goes back to doing that same exact thing.

I fear that too many people associate someone changing their mind as hypocrisy. People are allowed to change their mind and it doesn't just make them a hypocrite, especially something said years prior. Its a jersey number and ultimately it just doesn't matter. I truly don't understand the outrage that people have over this.

If more people just watched him play basketball and ignored all the media BS like this story, then you'd enjoy basketball much more imo. It's all media driven, narrative nonsense.

Media driven?

No, it's all LeBron driven. It's all Rich Paul driven. It's all Mavericks Carter driven. It's all Brian Windhorst driven.

These days, even the media now are an EASY TARGET.

How about we put the onus and responsibility on the actual guy for once?!

You can't just spew out crap without a filter and then not expect to be held to those words and promises!

The guy went on a 4 minute rant about it.

It wasn't a simple.. 'um, I just feel like switching to 6 next season!"

NO! He delved into it, he gave these STRONG STRONG reasons to do so and STRONG STRONG reasons to get rid of 23 for everyone. He went as far as telling every single nba player that they shouldn't be ALLOWED (yes he used that word)....ALLOWED to wear that number ever!

It's not about the jersey #, it's about him ranting on about whatever he feels fit and not being held accountable for his own words and to his own promises and convictions!

That should say "WHY", unless of course you are addressing LeBron James personally, which I doubt.

If you are going to spew trash in every LeBron thread, please do it with proper grammar.

Illadelph is right. Regardless of Lebrons big mouth and large dumb head and blah blah blah, I do secretly enjoy watching lebrons successes and failures. I call Brizzy(Brezzy) so many different names, same with Wizzy (Wade). I certainly am looking forward to next seasons NBA...unless Lebron gets K Love. Then he's just a colluding cheater again.

:laugh2:
Seriously. I still have my #15 Vince Carter Toronto Raptors jersey. Which is OVER 10 years old. I don't burn ****. What's the damn point?

There is no point to burning jerseys. Only a few fans do it. But apparently all of Cleveland was burning their jerseys when LeBron left, when it was really like 3 people.

The way PSD Works:

Me: It's not about the jersey number, it's about the principle and the way LeBron toys with the media and fans for ultimately his own benefit and no ones else's.

Rest of PSD: But it's just a jersey number mang!!!

This is PSD Logic.

My only real point is that this is just another in a long list of minuet details that everyone loses their mind over with regard to Lebron. The "not one, not two..." stuff, his jersey number choices, "he's holding the league hostage by not making a FA decision when i want him to", his decision to leave Cleveland, and this list goes on and on.

If you want to criticize him for flopping too much? Fair point. If you want criticize him for mouthing at referees too much? Fair point. His Dallas Finals performance? His biggest black mark on his resume and a fair criticism. But calling him a hypocrite because of a comment he made 5 years ago about a stupid jersey number? Its complete nonsense.

Ultimately all I care about is that I get to watch an all-timer and the best basketball player on the planet in his prime. I don't care what jersey he wears or the number on his back. People are going to nitpick this guy til he retires and its a shame. Too many are unable to appreciate a once in a lifetime talent for reasons that are beyond me.

Heat fans or should I say former Heat fans are the worst. Did 300,000+ really unfollow Miami's twitter handle? Not to mention that they hate LeBron for leaving but they had every right to criticize the Cleveland fans who complained about James leaving! Bunch of hypocrites left and right!

that 300,000 were most likely Cavs fans to begin with.

After Lebron fails to win a title in Cleveland, runs back to Miami:

"I'm going to put down #23 as i should have continued to since 2010. I wouldn't be the great player i am today if it wasn't for Michael Jordan. I'm humbly proud to announce i will be returning to #6 and continue where i left off in Miami and that's winning titles baby" - Lebron James

Wins to titles w/ Miami. Goes back to Cleveland as another home coming:

"2+3=6, 6+6+6+5=23, 29-6=23, 100-100+23=23. Michael won't mind, He didn't mind the 1st time. It's cool, #6 was too even for me anyways. I like these odds baby" - Lebron James.
