Here’s how these teams match up.

Forwards

If you want to know what the Kings struggled with during the regular season, 97% of people would say goal scoring from the forward position. In the playoffs, they don’t seem to be having any problems with that. Looking at the top 5 scorers of these playoffs, 4 of the 5 spots are occupied by LA’s forwards, impressive. On the other hand, the Rangers also have 4 forwards that are tops in scoring for the playoffs, except those 4 forwards are in the top 30, with none cracking the top 10, less impressive. Martin St. Louis is their top scorer with 13 points. New York has had trouble finding the back of the net but has scored some timely goals. Nonetheless, if New York had trouble scoring against the Flyers, Penguins and Canadiens, they’re in for a rude awakening in these Finals.

Edge-Kings

Defense

Defensively, both teams are strong in all areas of the game. Both defensive cores offer size, smarts, youth and veteran presence. From the start of the playoffs it’s been rare to see a brain fart or lapse of judgement from either squad. They’ve gone into each game with a set game plan and they usually executed it perfectly. Even the forwards from both teams have been forechecking and back-checking like it’s nobody’s business. Some of the best two way forwards are on each roster and they haven’t taken a shift off. The only difference in their defenses has to be the offense from the Kings D-men. They’ve put their defense to good use and by playing great defense; it allowed them to contribute offensively, an area the Rangers haven’t been able to replicate.

Edge-Kings

Goaltending

Finally, Henrik has a chance to win the Stanley Cup. What’s so classy about King Hank is the fact that he understands who his opponent is, Mr.Quick. Comparing their career numbers isn’t fair, Lundqvist’s are far superior, no matter how much experience he has...he’s the man. He gets respect but somehow is underestimated at the same time. When you ask the public who they believe the best goaltender in the league is, you hear Carey Price, Tukka Rask and Jonathan Quick before they utter Henrik. It’s silly, during the regular season he is the goalie you want in your nets when the game is on the line, he’s so damn clutch. Only problem is, this is not the regular season, it’s the playoffs. And in the playoffs he doesn’t look like Henrik Lundqvist, more like his twin brother Joel Lundqvist. However, in the 2014 playoffs he’s been mind-blowing; forget that one game against Montreal, he’s the Conn Smythe leader right now. Jonathan Quick has been nothing less than spectacular in his playoff career, hard to count him out. But let’s send some good luck to Hank!

Edge-Rangers

Coaching

Alain Vigneault was fired from the Vancouver Canucks last summer, two years after taking them to the Finals in 2011...take that Vancouver. It hasn’t exactly been a paradise for him in his first season with New York, minus the Finals appearance. He gives his players every chance possible, even when they disappoint and don’t produce or contribute (hey Rick Nash) he still has a lot of faith and confidence in his team. Every player has to love and respect that a coach has that much belief in them, probably helps fuel them during the tough times. His counterpart, Darryl Sutter, is a tough ***. He calls his players out when they stink, make a mistake or need to be knocked down a few notches. And somehow, some way, it is exactly what this Kings team needs. It’s a team full of young guns and guys who love to have fun, Sutter is like the trusting dad who will send you to your room for looking at him the wrong way. It works for this team, for these players, highly unlikely it would work anywhere else. But that’s why you see LA in the Finals once again.

Edge-Kings

Intangibles

This one, sadly, goes without saying.

Dominic Moore’s family has gone through some very tough times and no doubt it’s made his character stronger. Back in 2004, March 8th to be exact, his older brother, Steve Moore who was playing for the Colorado Avalanche, was blindsided by Todd Bertuzzi for an incident that happened in a prior meeting between the Avalanche and Canucks. As a result Steve suffered three fractured neck vertebrae, facial cuts and a concussion, Steve is still involved in an ongoing legal battle. But then something even worse happened.

Dominic wasn’t a household name before leaving the Sharks to be with his ailing wife who was diagnosed with liver cancer. After a 9 month battle, Moore lost his wife to the cancer and it seemed Moore would retire from the NHL. Surprisingly, he decided to give it another go and joined the Rangers and has been a vital part of this team throughout their playoff run.

Then there is also the tragic loss of Martin St.Louis’s mother who passed away suddenly from a heart attack on May 8th, a day before his Rangers were to take on the Penguins in Game 5 of the second round. Martin felt that his mother would want him to play the game and be with his teammates who were by his side during this tough time. Not to say that not one of the Kings players haven’t suffered any loses or tough times, but Martin’s loss during the playoffs has added sentiment, passion and drive in the Rangers.

When all is said and done, there can only be one. After much deliberation we came to the conclusion, that the 2014 Stanley Cup Champions will be………………………wait for it………………………wait for it……

THE NEW YORK RANGERS

How will they win? By playing solid, stingy defense and some of the greatest hockey Lundqvist has played in his entire career. If you’re a fan of low scoring games, tune in. Don’t believe for one second that low scoring games are boring, this will be the Finals of the decade!! Here’s the less exciting part, it’s not going to go to Game 7, BOOO, or Game 6, BOO, or even Game 5, WHAT?!?!?! Yes, the Rangers will sweep the Kings, grab the brooms, the dustpans, and be prepared to be shocked. Never will you be so entertained by a series that ends with a sweep. From 1995 to 1998, there were four consecutive Stanley Cup winners who took the Cup home by sweeping their opponent and the Rangers, who won Cup the season before this streak started, are primed to shut out the Kings.

I respect the article but I can't pick the Rangers to sweep. The Kings have a lot of talent and are battle tested the last 3 years. I don't expect Quick to be giving up nearly 3 goals a game like he has through much of the playoffs and with less scoring, there is less margin of error for both teams. The Western Conference was the superior conference this year as well.

I believe the Rangers will win the series but it will probably take 6 or 7 games. Taking at least 1 in LA in the first 2 games is obviously imperative.

That said, crazier things have happened if we do sweep them.

Does anyone know when was the last time a team won the Stanley Cup after having to go 7 games in three playoff rounds? My intuition tells me this is very uncommon but I haven't been able to locate this information, and the LA Kings just finished their 3rd, 7-game playoff series.

Rangers would also be there if they sucked a bit more during the Canadians series.

People mention the whole game 7 thing with LA but they gotta understand that the Rangers did it 2 times also and the 3rd round was 6 games. And they came back from being down 3-1...which is the opposite of LA, who allowed the other team to come back.

It's hard to dismiss something which has never occurred before in the history of the league. I'm sure every coach and player would rather have the fresh legs, but we'll see if it is a factor or not.

I believe Boston did this in 2011. Maybe LA is the first team to do it in the first three rounds? Or on the road?

Edit: I just checked and Boston won in '11 4-3 4-0 4-3 4-3.

Just took another stroll in the NHL forum. Too easy to get an infraction so I'm posting here.

They're saying the Kings already played for the cup. They may win but to call this just simply a formality is a joke. The Rangers are not going to simply sit back and give them the title. Not this team and definitely not right now.

We definitely may not be the best team in the playoffs but we're here and we ARE a damn good team playing very well right now.

Again, LA may win this series but to write off the Rangers days before the puck has even dropped is simply put, dumb.

Guys who cares what some people say on the main forum? Many of the same ones that bashed us now gave us no chance before the playoffs started so they have been wrong for 3 series. Most of their teams are not playing. Our team is playing. I'm glad we are the underdog. We have been the underdog all season in a way and especially in the playoffs. I'm also glad we are starting on the road. Since so few of our guys have played in the cup before I think will help some of them. :)

Lol yea NHL shop is a bunch of dirt bags. Reddit is going nuts over it, they even started a Twitter campaign about it lol I know it was too good to be true. I haven't received the cancellation e mail yet but I know I'm not getting the jerseys. The ridiculous part is that the money is out of my account so it could be earning interest. Like the NHL can't afford to give away the jersey for their own screw up. The jerseys prob cost them $50 so they're still making a profit off it. douches.

Let them keep thinking that; it only works to our advantage and plays into our strengths. The fact is, since mid December, the two best teams in the league are the Rangers and Kings (sorry I don't have those exact stats on hand now). The only question has been is the Rangers team since mid-December for real, or were they playing above their heads.....I think they've answered that question by getting into the Stanley Cup finals.

At worst, this will be a close series, in my view.

I like the way Nash is playing now. I also like that he is not trying to force his own shots at the expense of a teammate. The weird thing is Nash had a slump after the head injury BUT then came back to have around 10 games where he played as well as ever scoring around a goal a game. I think in the playoffs guys raise their defensive games a bit and Nash might grip his stick a bit too tight after the playoff slumps. I would not be surprised if he scored 4 goals in this series or scored 0 goals. As long as he defends and throws his body I will not complain. Hopefully he breaks out soon. Slumps are magnified in the playoffs but everyone gets them occasionally. Sometimes the puck just does not bounce your way.

Seeing Gaborick with 12 goals so far in the postseason......is it the Rangers system that sucks the goal prowess of people.

I remember how all of these powerhouses come here over the years and then they don't score as much here. Look at Nash right now...supposedly one of the most skilled players ever (top20) in the league

Well I don't think that is the case at all. Especially since Gabby managed 2 40 goal seasons in a defensive system here. Makes me mad, thinking about how he would have fit here, with this team/system. And also thinking we could use his willingness to go to the net, and his nose for rebounds. Too bad he was traded for not getting along with a coach who ended up on his way out. Also don't think he got much credit for playing because he was needed, but was nowhere near 100%, and never made excuses. I'd love to have him back if it was ever a possibility. Although, all the pieces that came back have fit, and made big contributions..

And Nash in season 1 was scoring just fine. Struggled this year after the injury, was still on a 30+ goal pace. More familiarity with the system, as well as continued growth from Kreider, and I'd bet his production is going to rise next season. Would also like to add, that if you look at his career numbers, the 2 seasons he has been here are in line with the rest, for the most part.

I definitely think playing with Kopitar helps Gaborik a lot. He may score some, but without Kopitar as his center he may have half the goals he has now.

Not sure if you guys have seen it but funny story how the Rangers Choose Lundqvist

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2084656-the-incredible-saga-of-how-the-rangers-lucked-upon-lundqvist

Best ever ranger? Wasn't richter better? Though Lundy has been spectacular anyway

Some great media coverage of our team. I liked watching some of the videos. Lots of joking around. I think our guys are in a good mindset. Serby asked Mats how many times he was told he was too short. Then mentioned that he was a giant compared to Marty. Mats said after game 6 that Marty saw him talking to his wife. Marty jokingly asked if Mats was hitting on Marty's wife. Mats said no I'm too tall for her. :D

Yeah. I've been waiting for him to come out of his slump again. That little run where he was scoring like crazy would really be needed say, starting tonight. ;)

True. He keeps pounding the puck at the net, but it seems he's always hitting the goalie square in the chest. He's not making the most of the crazy many chances he gets. I'm not sure he's not playing with a wrist injury or something like that.

Nash and Richards needs to show up!!!!. We need to score goals and we need to take advantage of the power plays when we get them! It's good that Nash was able to find the net against the Habs.

Lundqvist needs to play out of his mind this series...but we can't rely on him to get us 35-40 saves a night. This is a big series for McDonagh and the rest of the defensmen as well......Rangers are heavy underdogs but the stars are aligning for them. What a nailbiter this will be.

We got dominated in the 3rd but still had at least 3 amazing chances. Have to capitalize.

We messed up at LEAST 4 different chances on trying to make fancy passes on breakaways. We angle each other better or not attempt to pass it, and we have at least 4 more shots that can create rebounds or at least a shot, that if aimed perfectly, could be a goal (They were breakaways).

Instead, we slipped down hoping to get a foul call or we tried to make a pass we didn't need to. The passes either missed or were intercepted.

Nash has been so frustrating. I love Nash and all, but he has to start scoring for us to beat the Kings. He's doing all the little things and backchecking that I let it slide. Ultimately, he was brought here to put the puck in the back of the net and so far he has done everything but that. He has the opportunities, but it seems like he lost all his ability to finish.

That is exactly what I'm saying. He's actually played well besides not scoring. Sometimes I feel like he tries to do to much himself and ends up turning it over. His lack of scoring certainly isn't from a lack of effort so I don't want to be to hard on him. It's just that at this stage, effort only does so far and the results are what matters.

Money makes the world go round. For years I had MSG network and all of a sudden they took it away. We called numerous times to tell them how pissed we were and the only reasoning they had for taking it away was because MSG was asking for an absurd amount of money from them. After years of watching the game on my laptop with a crap picture, we switched to DirectTv before the season.

The takeaway for me this game is we clearly do not have the luxury to be able to win with key players underperforming. That is usually the case in Stanley Cup finals, if not before, but Nash, despite all his effort and +ve attitude, has to be an offensive threat. He simply hasn't been in quite a while. I admire how AV has supported him and put him in positions to succeed but he isn't contributing where we need him to contribute most.

Obviously, this is much more than 1 player; Girardi's play last evening simply cannot occur either to beat the Kings. Stepan has been ineffective on the power play for a handful of games now, consistently making high risk/cross ice passes when he has 1-2 better options that don't telegraph his passes either. Just poor decision making.

I do think, though, one bigger picture +ve for the Rangers is they came away from this game tonight convincing themselves the Kings are "beatable" and I do believe this is very important and could help in future games. Let's face it: this is a highly skilled, Stanley Cup seasoned, deep, impressive team, in all areas of the ice. We can beat them and I think some of our players needed to see that last night.

Let's win this next game boys and win or lose, we'll make life hell for the Kings back at MSG. It will be a 6-7 game series that can go either way, in my view.

Speaking of Dmen it was nice to see those hits by Stallman. He is going to be a guy that gets a good contract in the off season.

not worried about girardi, he rebounds well. something has been up with nash all playoffs. i thought it was an injury but then they had a few big days off and thought that would help but guess not. he makes 1-2 strong moves and he just can't finish that 3rd deek to put him in outright scoring position. he can never get the shot off where he wants it and its EXTREMELY frustrating. and you guys have to be holding your breath every time he makes a move because we are all expecting a highlight reel by the looks of it.

...also really disappointed by this loss. we got absolutely dominated for 1.5-2periods by a stronger team. I was really hoping we could capitalize on surprising them in the first and on.

Didn't want to post after last night's game, was too heated. Finally calmed down, but that was a tough loss to swallow with that Girardi turnover in OT.

The bright side is that we played really, really good hockey in the first two periods. Getting three shots off in the third is just horrible, but it's only game one. Hank looked pretty great last night despite and untouchable OT goal and a flukey first goal. The Doughty goal was also nasty, not much you can do about that. We really need to get the PP going again....here's to stealing game two and coming back home!

Redfish

The Kings will be a stronger team next game. To the man, they all seem to think we caught them off-guard and can make some modest adjustments to mitigate our offensive attack. I did not like the confidence I heard but their comments were all very similar. Our team needs to be stronger in several facets of the game. We may not get another short-handed goal all series but, other than that, we didn't play well enough to win.

By and large I am content with last night's game though. It was the first match in the Cup finals and it was on hostile ice and, as I stated earlier, some payers needed to see we can compete with these guys. We can beat them; it won't be easy but we need guys to produce when called upon. And I'd be ok with a break here and there as well!

SLY WILLIAMS
06-05-2014, 11:33 AM
It will take our very best hockey to beat the Kings. We can not win this series at 70% or 80%. We will need 100%. With that said last night we had 17 guys playing in their first cup game ever. That probably got some of them over hyped up to start the game and then there may have been an emotional let down by the third period. To play so well on the road against the former champs should let them know that they can do it if they want it enough. The Kings deserved to win but in reality that game could have gone either way. Do we have enough mental toughness and intestinal fortitude to play at 100%? I sure hope so. It will not be easy. One thing I noticed is the Kings are a great team moving forward but are not a great team moving backwards. They can be beat off the rush. We had some plays off the rush that could have been goals.

I didn't see anything last night that tells me that the Rangers can't hang with the Kings and make this a series...I knew our chance faded once Hagelin couldn't get that breakaway goal with less than a minute to go in the 3rd.

Lundvqist was incredible last night, but Stephan and Girardi's mistake led to 2 bad goals, and a loss.

Rangers need to use their speed to their advantage and win those loose pucks...Hagelin played great last night, but he's the only one putting pressure on the Kings D.

Paging Rick Nash and Brad Richards!!!!! Wake the **** up we need you!!!!! Nash played so timid last night, we need him to take some of those shots and put some pressure on Quick.

Rangers had some excellent PK's(including a short handed goal) and they need to keep that up. Lundqvist will keep us in this series, but we need someone to wake up and score some goals.

We were clearly gassed in the 3rd, I'm not sure if they were fatigued or if the Kings physicality wore them down, but we need to continue to use our speed and get more shots on goal if we want to win.

Game 2 is almost a must win, but I think we have it in us.....

In some ways this series is going to come down to hunger. The Kings know how much work it takes to win. Are we hungry enough to match that effort level. Our talent level is similar to their talent level outside of Kopitar and Carter. I think 17 guys playing in their first cup game was a big deal for some. We did not get destroyed. We lost in OT. The 2014 L.A. Kings team is actually deeper than the 2012 Stanley Cup team.

The Kings are a very experienced hockey club, and that’s part of the learning curve for the Rangers — they have to learn that this is the Finals, you have to step it up even to a different level than you did in the first three rounds of the playoffs. Brad Richards and Martin St. Louis have won the Stanley Cup, but for the rest of the Rangers, it was a learning experience.

You have to continue to play with authority, and you have to play with a lot of energy and passion and emotion. The Rangers were on their heels a little bit in Game 1 — I wouldn’t call it intimidation, I don’t think they were intimidated by the Kings, but I think that they began to have a little bit of fear of failure. And you have to have the mental strength to step over that hurdle when you’ve got a lead, or when there’s a big push back from the opposition.

You’re playing against a team with a core group that has won the Cup already, they know what it takes.

When I sensed any fear of failure, I would do this often: with any team I’ve ever had, I would point out the small, incremental things that we could do strategically, and/or point out some of the things that you could exploit right on the bench. Or I would put out players that I could see had the energy — maybe they were physical players, maybe they were skilled players — but had a sense for their game at that particular time, and I would double-shift or triple-shift people like that, and change the momentum of a hockey game.

I’d like to see Rick Nash step it up. He’s a quality player, he’s had some world-class experience and success. He has to be a factor. He has to demonstrate that he can make a difference. I’d like to see more out of him.

He didn’t shoot as much — Derek Stepan didn’t shoot as often as he should also, he’s always looking to unload the puck. You have to surprise goaltenders like Henrik Lundqvist and Jonathan Quick. You have to shoot the puck and surprise them. You can’t be looking for the perfect opportunity, because if you give them a chance to read, they will stop the puck.

And I want to see Nash be more of a physical presence with his determination to go to the net, to look for loose pucks, to drive to the net when he has the puck, to show some speed on the outside. To go in there without fear, into the front of the net, and drive to the net … and be a presence. I didn’t feel that he was a presence Wednesday night.

Richards and St. Louis have to be game-breakers as well. And on the back end, the Rangers don’t have a Brian Leetch. Ryan McDonagh’s improved his game, and you’ve got a group of competent defensemen, but you don’t have the real game-breaker. So they have to try to as a group to bring more to the table than they did in Game 1.

Chris Kreider has speed, and he could be on loose pucks. He can play with a little bit of an edge … but he’s learning, he’s inexperienced, and I’m sure Wednesday night’s game taught him a lot about the consistency he has to have to bring his best level of play every shift. I didn’t see that in every shift, but his speed could be very helpful to the Rangers as well.

I don’t know the players, but I would support Dan Girardi. I think he’s a solid character, I think he’s a solid player. I’d just tell him it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you respond to what happens to you, so let’s be ready for the next game, and that applies to all the players — they let down in the third period — whether they’re a little bit in awe, or whether they were just being pressed that much harder.

The first thing I’d be encouraged by is Lundqvist’s goaltending. He again showed that he can keep the Rangers in a game, and he had to do that in the third period even to get to overtime.

I’d also be very encouraged by the fact that L.A. showed some openings for the Rangers when they generated speed in the neutral zone, and in particularly, when they were killing penalties.

They had three or four great opportunities on the penalty kill, and L.A. conversely is going to want to really close that part of their game off, because that’s too dangerous, too careless, on behalf of the Kings. If they don’t, then certainly the Rangers can continue to take advantage of sometimes sloppy play on the L.A. power play.

I’d be encouraged by the fact that they’ve got good speed, and surprising speed. I don’t think the L.A. Kings were ready for the Rangers’ speed. Carl Hagelin generated some great chances on the penalty killing in particular. That was a big surprise for Los Angeles, there’s no question about it.

The things I’d want to clean up are the energy level has to be greater than it was in the third period. The compete level has to increase. Because the initial start was quick, fast, dynamic, and then they sat back a little bit, L.A. came to them and tied the game up, and then New York really didn’t show any initiative after that. They had a couple of chances late in the third period, but they really didn’t play with the emotional investment that they should have prior to even giving up the 2-0 lead.

I think L.A. was probably a little bit emotionally expended at the start of Game 1 because of the previous series with Chicago, but then once they found their game, the Rangers weren’t ready for it. Drew Doughty showed he’s a game-breaker again Wednesday night.

Quick is a very solid goaltender, but I still give a little bit of the edge to Lundqvist. I think he was a little bit more in control, but then again, it’s really hard to give Quick a fair evaluation when he didn’t see any shots for about 12 minutes in the third period and Lundqvist was being bombarded. If they had scored a goal for Lundqvist, he would have won the game for them.

We lost Game 1 in overtime in 1994 at the Garden. The Rangers should be looking at video, they should be reinforcing the positive, they should be emphasizing the aspect of their emotional investment when L.A.’s really coming at them hard and putting pressure on their D. They have to have quick outlets, they have to know that’s coming. It’s not one thing that you will say to the team, especially with two days off, they’ve got a lot of time to do a lot of teaching, and have them more ready for Game 2.

They have to win at least one game in Los Angeles, and it would be a huge win for them if they could carry some momentum back to New York. The Kings have proved that they can win the big games on the road, they’ve done it for three consecutive series Game 7s. And L.A. doesn’t change its game much from its home ice or on the road. It would be a huge boost for New York if they can win Game 2.

I never use the term Must Win. You have to win four hockey games — it could be the first four … it could be the last four. That’s the Must.

The Rangers were down and out against Pittsburgh and they came back and played great hockey to put out a very strong team. So they have to take some solace in that as well and apply it now at a higher level.

Let’s see if the Rangers did learn from Game 1. I think that they will, that they have. Rangers in 7. I won’t change my mind after one game.http://nypost.com/2014/06/06/keenan-pens-message-to-rangers-cant-play-game-2-scared/
