Must have been a reality check for them when realizing they had to guard all five positions rather than just 2 for Houston running with Iso ball. lol

this a 7 game series.

I highly doubt that. SA would exploit all their weaknesses just as they're doing this series. It might not be blowouts, but they have issues on D and their offense is predictable a lot of times.

Pop would probably coach circles around McHale.

I still cringe when he drives the ball lol. But this year, I've seen him have more heat check moments where he just shoots it up even on a fast break if they don't have numbers. He's hit it a good amount of times, and Pop doesn't yank him out. I guess he's got the Gary Neal green light now

Blazers have more FTA's, 1 more 3 pointer, more rebounds, more assists, shooting 43% (compared to SA shootoing 48%) 4 less fouls and is still down big. Missed FT's and turnovers were the difference. They definitely showed more tonight despite the score. I don't know I've ever seen the Spurs go this many FT's (25) without missing any.

Shaping up to be one of the most lopsided series in history. 15+ every game for a 2nd round matchup against a team who just took out Houston in 6? That's ridiculous.

I'm currently reading an old Q and A with one of the sharpest/biggest NBA betters in the world from 2010 - one question was on the current/future value of George Hill versus TP and what the Spurs plans should be going forward.

The general consensus was that their value was a wash and that because the Spurs "had very little chance of ever sniffing a title with the core of Duncan/TP/Manu again" that they should look to trade those pieces that summer. Yet, 4 years later, here we are again...

It's truly amazing how together/dominant this team has maintained over the past decade+

Game of match ups!

A Houston spurs series would have been way better, spurs still taking it tho in 6

Blazers earned their way to the second round but let's get real, LMA was unreal I games one and two and couldn't replicate those performances they were flukes, at least two in a row were.i doubt the blazers win against Houston again if they played

Lillards three was no fluke, the guy lives the big shots....

mightybosstone

I don't want to be that guy, but I have to think if Houston had been in this series, it wouldn't be remotely this lopsided. The NBA playoffs are obviously a game of matchups and the Rockets are just a superior matchup to San Antonio than Portland was. However, Portland matched up well with the Rockets and played some phenomenal basketball in the fourth quarters of those games.

As somebody who would have loved to have seen a San Antonio, Houston second round series, though, it's truly disappointing that this series has been so one-sided. It just feels like such a huge missed opportunity not only as a Rockets fan but as a fan of the NBA.

kdspurman
05-12-2014, 09:27 AM
While true about Houston matching up better in the regular season, Portland had matched up with us very well in the regular season too. we split the season series with them, 1 game LMA was out and the last one he got injured in mid way through. They also won the season series the year prior.

It's tough to really know how Houston would have fared in the playoffs against SA mainly because the playoffs are a completely different animal. SA started playing their best ball after the all star break, and the 2 teams (Hou/SA) only met once after that, and that game of course is where Green/Leonard sat & the starters didn't play in the 4th. You can't take too much from games played in December/January.

I feel like the coaching disparity from Pop/McHale would be on full display.

I'd still easily put money on the Spurs to win the series, but 15-24-point losses in the first three games? Hell no. But I agree with you that the regular season and postseason are two different seasons entirely and that Pop's coaching advantage over McHale would give the Spurs a substantial edge.

Yeah. It's just unfortunate we won't get to see that series. I know a few Spurs fans, and it would have been a really fun couple of weeks, not to mention the epic debates on PSD. Not to downplay Portland's performance in the playoffs too much, because they were phenomenal in the Houston series, but they have been such a disappointment against San Antonio. This has been a very Jekyll and Hyde postseason for the Trailblazers.

Hopefully we get to see a Houston vs. San Antonio playoff series while Duncan, Manu and Parker still have something left in the tank.

It's always fun watching Duncan/Dwight go at it. It definitely would have been fun. For Portland, this will be a good experience if they can build/learn from it. They've got some nice pieces there, they just need to add a few more and continue to play together.

I was hoping it would have been Houston personally, but I thought either matchup would be tough. I just figured if it's Houston, at least the travel wouldn't be as bad since games are played every other day. Plus deep down, I would want/hope they eliminate a James Harden lead team after his last stint against us the WCF :)

Agree. I think we overrated them due to roster..they didn't seem to play together well. Poor poor defense and bad isos. Lack of execution down the stretch as well from Harden
