How long have you been watching the NBA?

The answer is no.

They come gradually.

MVP is announced just before the Conference Semis.

All of this won't matter if they don't win. Noah didn't play exactly great the first game. Looking for him to be a triple double machine. Outplayed by Nene. Anyways, well deserved nonetheless. Probably the most versatile center in recent years. Can literally do everything except score.

This award is unjustly catered towards big men. I wonder the next time a PG, SG, or SF will win it.

I think it was artest and Gary Payton as the last 2 wing defenders to win it. It's hard for a wing defender to win it.

ehh not that unjustly big-men do usually have more defensive responsibilties/impact.

Recently only time you could argue that it was unjust was maybe Lebron last year, and Iguodala should have come in 2nd/3rd this year.

Quite simply perimeter defenders don't have the same impact big men do. It's skewed towards bigs, but not unfairly. The advent of these advanced plus/minus stats are really driving that home. Bigs are just far more important defensively.

Iggy is the one perimeter guy I think deserving of a vote.

LeBron's a great defender, but wasn't this year. Obviously Harden doesn't deserve even consideration, but a strong argument could be made that LeBron didn't either. He coasted this year on D, big time.

I do find that hard to believe. Unless there's a troll amok.

As for my actual opinion...I'm happy Noah won because I love him, but he wasn't the single best defender in the league. I think that's undeniable. But he had the team defensive success to snatch it, and that's fine. Like all awards, it's rarely as straight-forward as it should be. He shouldn't have won it by the margin he did, but I'm absolute fine that he did. Howard, Gasol, Bogut and Iggy were better defenders this year IMO. Gasol missing time wrecked his chances, Howard being on an average defensive team ruined his, Bogut is always overlocked and Iggy, well, he should have gotten more love.

There aren't as many defensive stats to go by as there are on offense, but one universal number that can accurately depict how much a player meant to his team is Defensive Win Shares. It's a calculated estimation designed to show a player's contributions in terms of victories. And in that category, Noah's defensive play contributed nearly seven wins to the Bulls' 48-34 record. His 6.6 DWS led the NBA, slightly above Paul George (6.4), DeAndre Jordan (5.8) and Roy Hibbert (5.0), three other players who garnered votes for Defensive Player of the Year. (For good measure, Noah's 11.2 total Win Shares were ninth in the NBA).

Joakim Noah is one of my favorite player's. What he does on the court is damn right impressive. The ability to hustle every play while provided exceptional defense, passing, occasional scoring, and of course his energy is always at a high level. Well deserved. But as someone stated before, he'll need to come out strong if they plan on beating Wizards in game 2. Bulls are a grind out team but Nene got the best of him in game 1.

DeAndre Jordan over Ibaka, Iggy, and PG is a joke to me….even though it’s only 3rd place in the voting…still…DeAndre is great at timing blocks…cool…I guess the voters didn’t take in account help defense, P&R defense and the very important, back line communication, that bigs need to help his team funnel the action or communicate to the wings to push it to the sides…even Dwight, Bogut, Timmy should be higher

Don't you hate those guys who use their vote to make a statement. I'd pull their rights immediately. Same with the guy who voted for Melo last year, or the one who voted Iverson a few years ago. Just tell them "thanks for participating, but your votes mean something and aren't meant to be a statement for yourself. Your voting services will no longer be needed." and write them off.

Bruno

there is a guy named Al McCoy, he's from a Phoenix radio station, and his first place DPOY vote went to PJ Tucker. Joakim Noah wasn't in his top three.

full blown homer votes like this should result in a loss of privilege. he doesn't deserve to be voting with a homer-*** jerk off votes like that. pisses me off that we have 'professionals' in the media who vote like amateur fans on an internet forum. i think votes like that should be exposed and toasted.
