Forgotten might be too strong a word, but if it turns out that KD runs the future of the league, and Bron is only a blip, I can see this coming to fruition... somewhat. In the same way that Moses gets lost in the shuffle for being sandwiched in between some transcendent players.

He won't be forgotten.

But I'll tell you this. If Durant wins a championship in OKC (small market) before thinking of jumping ship to another team, you can bet your *** he will be looked up in higher regard than LeBron when it's all said and done. LeBron leaving Cleveland decades later will STILL leave a bad taste in the mouths of the majority of NBA basketball fans and be apparent in the annals of the history book.

If Durant is able to stick with and win a title in the small market OKC in a tougher west when LeBron couldn't do it in the small market of Cleveland in the weaker east, Durant will look more like a god-like figure than LeBron.

Those making a case for KD need to factor in head to head match ups versus Bron. “He was LBJ's puntà will be attached" to that argument when it's said and done.

JasonJohnHorn
04-08-2014, 08:16 PM
Forgotten? I dunno.

You look at a great talent like The Big O, people who don't know basketball don't know him. You ask anybody who doesn't watch the game to name somebody, they name Jordan, then Magic, then maybe Kobe, perhaps Kareem and if they are really good Bird.

Nobody says Bill Russell or Wilt or the Big O. Twenty years from now, will people remember James they way they remember Magic and Jordan?

I think this speaks to who he is OFF the basketball court and what kind of icon he is. People outside of fans won't remember Tim Duncan (most don't even know him now), yet he has more regular season wins than any other player today, and more rings than any current player not named Kobe or Fisher.

So I think there is an argument to be made here. LBJ may not transcend time the way Jordan and Magic have, but he may. Who knows. We will have to wait 20 years to find out.

People said the same about Mike James.

Great point. There are a lot of amazing players that people don't remember. Moses is the only player to win back2back MVPs on different teams. Hakeem and Robinson likely won't be remembered or talked about 20 years from now. And even guys who win don't get remembers as well as guys who are just more popular. There is a reason why Kobe got voted to the All-Star game without really playing this season, while Duncan, who is the best player on the best team didn't get voted on.

MLB has a lot longer history than the NBA, and we def don't forget about the top players of the last 100 years.

People talk about Stan Musial, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Honus Wagner, Rogers Hornsby etc all the time.

These guys were great 50-100 years ago, and they are consistently still talked about and ranked.

I never said that was the case, I said if it turns out to be the case. Some people still believe KD has untapped potential that could push him to new heights.

Nice point this post-season and the next two are going to tell us who gets that spot on mount rushmore. People love assigning players to a decade so if Durant becomes the face of the 2010s I think that hurts Lebrons legacy alot.

People talk about Stan Musial, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Honus Wagner, Rogers Hornsby etc all the time.

These guys were great 50-100 years ago, and they are consistently still talked about and ranked.

Among fans of the game, LBJ will be remembered and ranked for a LONG time. Speaking to people outside of the game, I don't think the same can be said.

For example, I don't follow baseball. Never really liked it. The names you mentioned, I only know Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle.

I know some more recent guys, and know Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Sandy Kofaux (sp?), but these otehr guys, I have no clue.

The same can be said for basketball. I asked my girlfriend to name three NBA players playing today, she said "Michale Jordan?" And that was ALL she had.

When I was growing up, EVERYBODY knew who Magic Johnson was, and EVERYBODY knew who Michael Jordan was. My grandmother even knew who they were, and she was a racist old lady who spent all day watching the shopping network.

People today STILL know Michael Jordan. There are a lot of people who if you ask them what sport LBJ played, wouldn't even be able to give you the right answer, and if they could, they likely couldn't tell you who he played for.

You ask those same people what sport Jordan played, and they will know, and most of them will also be able to say he played for the Bulls.

Will LBJ be forgotten by people who are fans of the game? No. Not for a VERY long time.

Will he transcend the game like Magic and Jordan did? Maybe, but he hasn't yet.

You have to remember, Jordan was branded so well, that he STILL makes more than any current NBA player in endorsements each year from Nike alone.

50 years from now, people WILL know who Ali was, and who Babe Ruth was and who Jordan was, but they likely will not be as familiar with LBJ.

Nothing Durant can do can make people just up and forget Lebron. In 10 years, Lebron has 4 MVPs, 2 championships, 2 Finals MVP, 2 Gold Medals. Nobody will just "forget" that.

I think you have to consider the meaning of 'forget'. In this sense, it doesn't mean "Who is Lebron James? Never heard of the guy." I means "Oh, yeah, LeBron James was great before Durant took over."

Chronz gave a great example with Moses Malone. Dude won back-2-back MVPs and a championship with the Sixers, who then moved him to ATL where one of the worst coaches ever had him coming off the bench behind Jon Konkac. And all of a sudden, the guy that won 2 MVPs and a ring, isn't on the all-star team and everybody is talking about Magic and Bird and Jordan and little bit about Dr. J, even though it was Moses, Dr. J's teammate, that won the MVP award.

And Chronz isn't saying that people WILL forget, just that if KD goes on a tear he will eclipse LBJ. People talk about LBJ being the GOAT right now.... if KD runs off a threepeat with a finals and league MVP each year, people will be talking about KD being the next 'Jordan', not the next 'LBJ', in which case, they will have gleamed over what LBJ has done so far.

LBJ is AMAZING. Nobody is doubting that, it is just more about the short memory of fans and how only a few players transcend the game.

LBJ and Durant are in a conversation with each other right now.

Neither of them are in a conversation with Jordan yet.

Every now and then something will slip through the cracks, but at the same point and time there was some basketball related talk here aside from the folks like yourself who were just upset that it was still open.

But since the majority of it is not basketball related, it'll get locked up.
