I don't understand it. The numbers say he is pretty good. The eye test says he is pretty good as well especially on help defense.

He's not going to sit there and lock you down 1-on-1 like some of the elite defenders, but his length and help defense makes him one of the better defensive starters at the wing position.

Maybe it's because Sefalosha is the defensive specialist on that team. Who knows?

He is a good defender and has been pretty good the past 2 years, before that his defense struggled a bit. Once you have a rep for something, it's hard to break.

he has improved a lot and turned from a defensive liability to a solid defender.
problem is a lot of time this year he has shown lack of effort and even lack of interest on D.
its a new thing and I hope it wont be a factor come playoff time.

Same thing with Dirk, early on in their careers they were poor defensive players, and although both have improved to be above average defenders, that reputation is hard to break.

Mane **** the numbers! Why are people so damn obsessed with numbers??? If you saw a player's defense get torched ALL NIGHT and eventually lit up for 40pts but 4 awful passes fell into his hands. He gets credited with 4 stls even though your eyes literally saw dude play NO D. Will you still be screamin bout some freakin numbers then????

People say Durant is not a good defender because hes NOT a good defender. Atleast he isnt on a consistent basis. My God, you guys always with the numbers. You do realize there are other, more effective ways to evaluate a player besides NUMBERS, right????

In my opening post I went into detail with and without numbers.

I agree his year in Seattle and the first year in OKC Durant struggled on Defense.

Since 2009 though he's been a pretty good defender. Again, people seem to think steals and 1-on-1 lockdown is what makes you a good defender.

Durant makes the right rotations, clogs passing lanes, and can fight through screens. Having a 7'5" wingspan helps.

His length does allow him quite some luxuries on defense. It's taken a while to hone all those skills, but he's certainly made huge strides. He's being used in a variety of ways too, guarding the opposing team's best players regardless of position. He's been stuck on Griffin, Kyrie and LeBron at times this season, for example. There are times when the opposition does just go off on him (Gerald Green sticks out, multiple times), but for the most part he's plenty stable.

I don't think he's a bad defender, at all. But at the same time I don't think he's reached "elite" status either. He's solid, versatile and when he wants to he can be great. But yeah, the stigma has stuck/will stick longer than it should because of his ineptitude early on.

he earned the reputation his first 3 years is why, but last year, and especially this year, he has turned into an excellent defender. I mean, he shouldn't make an all nba defensive team, but he is way above average at this point.

He was really bad at using his length early in his career. He has vastly improved in the last 2 years.

Still not a great defender IMO, but he's really good. He was never really bad either he just wasn't as good as someone his size and skill set should be.

Yep it was because of his first few years in the league. He's been great defensively this year.

He's decent. It definitely isn't the best aspect of his game, and he isn't going to wow you with that, but he's smart and athletic enough to be ok, or top 40% lets say. I haven't heard anyone put him in the same group as Melo.

I have never heard anyone call him a bad defender. Just it's the biggest flaw in his game, and he's good, but not elite imo.

Now that's someone who no one people will never give the opportunity to show he's improved

I still think Melo lacks some consistency on that end, but he has been much improved the past few years. Melo is a pretty decent defender honestly.

That's a praise most people still won't give him though. But thats a topic for another time.

Durant has definitely improved the last few years defensively AND play-making wise
