Mike D'Antoni has one more guaranteed season on his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and the franchise is leaning toward retaining him.

There have been rumblings both privately and publicly that there have been some disgruntled players.

The Lakers hired D'Antoni to replace Mike Brown in November of 2012 despite being close to a deal with Phil Jackson.

Great decision by the Lakers. Gotta give this guy some healthy NBA caliber before you decide to dump him.

They won't be competing for anything significant next year anyways, they can hunt for another top 5 pick.

Good move by the Lakers. Gotta get the next 3 years top pick.

Hate Dantoni, but no point in getting rid of him till you have some talent. Hard to evaluate a coach when he has no healthy talent.

And true the Lakers can recruit a better coach once their roster improves. As it stands it will be difficult to find someone they really want to take over.

Kobe will never allow this. He wants to win and not tank. The Lakers are turning into the Clippers of old pretty fast.

So...they're giving up on Next year.

they don't expect to sign anyone. So, it'll be Kobe and the draft pick next year only

Lakers 2015 1st rounder belongs to the Suns. I don't even think it's lottery protected.

That's the spirit. This is honestly better than being mediocre for years and not getting better. The Lakers need to suck for a few years.

With a healthy and competitive Kobe, we ain't gonna be that bad to get a top 5 pick. Hell we won't even get a top 5 pick in this yrs draft.

only way if he wants to win is if he plays. Kobe is egotistical as they come. that and the Lakers being healthy. D'antoni is a victim of circumstances right now. He's going to lean heavily on Kobe when he comes back, and thats the way Kobe wants it - which will suit Kobe just fine.

Wow, thought after this disappointing season Dantoni would be as good as gone this off-season.

Lol, after a ruptured Achilles and blownout knee, just keep kicking the man and spit in his face while he's down on the ground and is approaching the light at the end of the tunnel.

Kobe's as broken down as they come. With Dantoni back can he even make it to 5 games of starter minutes?

Can't say I'm shocked. It's not like the Lakers are going to be competing next year so it's debatable whether it's worth cutting him (and paying him to sit) and going after another coach.

Of course, knowing Jim Buss, I'm looking forward to the 5 year extension next year. Back to Showtime, right?

I honestly don't know how this guy still has a head coaching gig in the NBA... He could work as an offensive co-ordinator but he's useless.

The deadline for season ticket renewal is the day before the draft. They're not about to let that guy mess up the money.

Pay him to go away. The Dubs will probably be dumb enough to fire Jackson, DAntoni would be a great fit there.

Lol exactly is a HUGE risk. If we end up tanking again and it ends being 6th or lower ,will be pissed and heart- broken.

Can't be that much of an idiot, I mean he did want rid of Melo.

But really, this guy had a badly composed team with the Knicks and has had a bad team with the Lakers. He deserves a break. His rep has definitely been hurt by situations beyond his control.

Mike D Will NEVER coach a team to an NBA title. This is why he should not be the Lakers coach because that's all LA wants... Mike couldn't win with Shaq and Kobe

I think its simple. If Mike goal was to tank from season start then he should return because he did a wonderful job. However if he was really trying to win games then he should have been fired already. All the bigs on the team cant wait to get from under him. If Kaman, Pau and Hill bolt that will be Two solid centers and two all-star centers running away. That's not a good thing. Most teams have a had time finding quality bigs. Mike could not figure out how to use any of the 4 he had at his disposal. If one center complain fine but all 4? Howard, Gasol, Hill, Kaman. From season start Mike was bound to fail. First off the plan was to start Nash and Kobe in the back, On the defensive end that was not going to work well. At Nash age and health Should have been established he was going to come off the bench. secondly He pin D league Shawne Williams as the Team starting PF and we saw Johnson there as well. One wonder why Hill and Kaman cant wait to leave, Why Howard left and Why Gasol will leave too? Will Lakers lone center be Sacre? The question coming into the Season Was how good Lakers were going to be defensively and How far Kobe will Fall. Kobe got upset Lakers were viewed to finish 12th and him Ranking 25th. Will in the end analyst were being generous. Not only did Lakers over spend for a fast declining player they have a system and a coach who the declining player don't like. So My question is if Mike was trying to win games how can He remain the coach? No player 6,9 or over 235lbs want to play for him. He was a disaster in NY and have been a disaster in LA. Both teams highest paid and most talented had a issue with him. If he is retain what kind of building blocks are you laying? His reason for not playing the bigs don't add up he is not being honest. No reason for Sacre to play ahead of Hill and Kaman. No reason for Williams to play ahead of Hill and Kaman. Just be honest you don't think those guys move quick enough or shot the 3 in your system. To the hell with defense whats that?

lmfao...

Ok so its one thing to keep him.. If you don't have any talent then whats the point of bringing in and paying a new coach?

But, to announce to the ENTIRE world We intend to fire him at the end of the season, to only then just take it back and go "meh, nvm..''.. Just shows there is a lot of confusion and conflicting ideas in the Lakers FO.
