No way you can put the whole game on that one decision. 10x someone came up to bat with the opportunity to knock one in. The Napoli decision is far from what cost them the game.

I'm not. It was bad managing. I only saw the last 3 innings of the game. He did the same thing a bunch of times last year and I don't like it. I also HATE the position he just put JBjr in.

03-31-2014, 06:24 PM
Jeez its 1 GAME!! Relax.

No ones upset over losing a game, we lost because of bad luck. I am annoyed with the treatment JBjr got. You don't just throw a young guy like that into an intense at bat like that. He's cold off the bench, had a messed up plate approach during the spring where he was trying to hit homeruns. That's a big blow to his confidence right off the bat. Right now he probably thinks he's the reason they lost the game. Bad managing decisions like pinch running for Naps always annoy me too, no matter the game.

Soxfan85
03-31-2014, 06:35 PM
On a more Positive note. Grady Siezemore was outstanding today going 2-4. and his first homerun in years. Who would have thought not playing in the big league for 3 years and have an A+ SP and outstanding first game. IF GS can stay healthy and keep this pace up I can see him hitting .300 to early but lets see how it goes next game.

We could of easily won this game pretty handley with 3 balls hit to the warning track/wall but the wind saved Baltimore's *** today.

Lester pitched great, Bogaerts and Sizemore look outstanding. Pedroia and Ortiz are still making great contact, I'm not worried at all. Easy to accept a win, but gotta take our losses once in a while.

The Blue Jays on the other hand... Lol.

Soxfan85
03-31-2014, 08:20 PM
Farrell’s decision to stick with Pierzynski in the eighth was justifiable. The manager explained afterward that he trusted his hitter would to make contact and to give him a good at-bat. Beyond that, hitting for the catcher there could’ve potentially left the Sox compromised if the game had gone to extra innings and had David Ross subsequently gotten hurt.

Plus, Pierzynski was actually better against lefties last season than he was against righties (.279 to .269), and he was a respectable 2-for-8 against Matusz. Potential pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes had homered in one of three career encounters with the Orioles'; lefty, but managers tend to err on the side of keeping a catcher on the bench, especially so early in the year. It made sense.

Agree 100% Why risk of injuring someone and loose the player for the year?

That looked like vintage Sox loss over the years, we couldn't get anyone in with 2 outs and hit a bunch of balls to the warning track that were just short.... all while having more hits than the other team and much better pitching and fielding.

Middlebrooks is an inconsistent mess and always has been... Pierzynski will come around not to worried there.

Pitching has been outstanding, and Napoli has 6 home runs including spring training. Maybe he'll have a career type year like he did with the Rangers in 2011.

A half a billion dollar spending spree for the Yankees this past offseason has proven they can't even beat the Houston Astros, twice. They are the 2013 Blue Jays.

AJP's swing is slow and long right now, his lack of discipline par for the course. Could be by July people are begging for Vazquez to get the job.

MWB? He'll get hot, crush 4-5 SP's for a few weeks here and there and look morbid against most others, but if he hits 25 HR's in 600 PA's it won't matter to most fans if his OBP is .297, but it sure will matter to BC.

We all remember early in the season last year when WMB had the 3 (almost 4) home run game against the Blue Jays and then did jack **** from then on. I was somewhat buying into the "WMB gets new contacts" hype, but am starting to second guess that excuse. Granted, it's only 2 games into the season but he's looked awful. Maybe the Marlins will still be high on him around the trade deadline.

Depending on what the standings are come the trade deadline and how well Cecchini is performing in Pawtucket, I wouldn't mind trading WMB and calling up Cecchini. At least according to soxprospects.com, Garin possesses "excellent strike zone judgement and discipline." Can't say the same about Will.

I know it's early.

I swear I could watch that diving play by Pedroia on repeat for hours. He's incredible.

My dream back to last year is WMB to Miami for Stanton - failing that he is doing well enough in late June... then a team with serious designs on the playoffs loses a vet 3B for the year - Beltre for example. They come to us and we say - well he's our starting 3B and he's starting to hit for real.. it'll cost, and then they hand us more than what we hoped and get GC on the next plane. Oh yeah.

WMB is Dean Palmer with less zone judgement, can't wait to move on from him.

Hope so, that should be enough to ward off Luchhie, even trolls have limits.

I don't disagree with this at all, even if we're in first place in July or atleast close to it. If offence is a hole in the lineup, I'd take the defensive wizardry of Vazquez over a struggling tandem at the plate. Not that AJ or Ross can't play defence, but just saying.

Would be nice to see what the kid can do, since he'll likely be the starter in 2015 with Ross and AJ off the books.

I'm torn on Gomes at leadoff. If he's good/real good - then he'll be insufferable - and his ego will grow even bigger, but if he sucks it hurts the Sox....

Pretty stoked that the 'kid' is hitting 5th.

Gomes is quite mediocre. Time to give Brentz a chance soon.

Gomes has his value as a solid platoon option.

Damn, hope this isn't another game filled with double plays and missed opportunities.

Pffft double play Middlebrooks, seen that coming... and likely again later in the game along with a K in a seperate at bat.

Can't stand him

Betts is 4-4 with a leadoff Hr off of Biddle in Portland's opener. Owens has a no-no going through 5 with 7k's.

Keep the minor league stuff in the prospects thread. Capuano coming in, got a bad feeling about this.

Also Xander 5/9 with 3 BB's in this series. Great start for him. Surprising too since he started slow every year in the minors.

It was probably less motivating for X in the minors, but you see it every once in a while when a prospect (usually a C+, B fringe type) get a shot in the majors and they all of a sudden turn into a player no one seen coming when the spotlight shines on them at the highest level. They all of a sudden decide to "bring it" every night.

Xander is obviously an A+ player, future stud if he ain't already.

Actually both of my sons are named after AL greats... I tried for Carl, but, the wifey wasn't too keen on that.

Who cares about the rest of the team, this is the year of Xander. His potential is unmatched amongst mid-infielders. I really don't see how at one time Profar was ranked higher. Completely mind blowing. Sorry Profar, you have nothing on Bogaerts. Rant 1 over. Is anyone else worried about Doubront going further, raises hand. I am.
