View Full Version : Should conferences be eliminated in the playoffs?

Regardless of the all-star game, the West is obviously much better than the east right now. Which again raises the age-old question: Should conferences even be a factor in the playoffs?
The current system guarantees eight teams from each conference. If conferences weren't counted in playoff ranking, though, there would be about 10 teams from the west and six from the east, including Indiana, Miami, Toronto, Chicago, Washington and Brooklyn, which would come in 15th just ahead of Minnesota.
It's really not as lopsided as it seems at first, but why not let the 16 best teams fight it out, regardless of where they are? Is it a matter of marketing? The big-market teams, other than Brooklyn, aren't going to the playoffs regardless.
