I apologize for being way late to this party...but what the hell?! I thought Lebron was just saying 'no one should wear #23'. They actually have the jersey number retired there without a single game played by Jordan?
When was this done??

Does anyone support this..?

I believe Pat Riley had it done a few years back. That's an unbelievable amount of respect for MJ, I love it

I think It was done back in '03 because Riley wanted it done. Not too sure why but I think Riley played a big part in it.

I know one time it was supposed to be an unofficial league wide thing but I am not sure every team abided by it.

So this is the real reason LeBron switched numbers..... He knew he was going to Miami for a long time, and knew 23 was retired there. Bam.

Yeah I always thought it was really stupid. It's not like he was Jackie Robinson.

Well I did not know Miami had a jersey retired for Jordan, so I guess that part of it yes.

Had nothing to do with Lebron, Riley did it years ago out of respect for his many battles with MJ.

i understand you can respect a legend but retire his shirt is a bit too much

Jordan never played for the Miami heat? Retiring a player that never played for you's jersey?

I'm not saying that's true but no one really understood why all of a sudden Lebron says no one should wear that number after wearing it for like 6 years. Made no sense :S

Yeah I didn't understand it myself. Like when Bird was retiring the Lakers gave him a ceromony at the Forum to show respect but I'll be damned if they put a Bird Jersey in our building!!!

Magic and Kings have also retired number 6...in honor of the fans.

All in all, retiring a jersey and not letting anyone else wear it is nonsense. I don't mind the player's number being honored but it really limits the teams to lame numbers.

Hang the number/name in the rafters but let it be donned by whichever player wants it.

I wonder all the time what teams are gonna do in about 30 years from now when they begin to run out of numbers that aren't retired...

Well...Toney Douglas was wearing number 23 for the Knicks at that time so maybe he didn't want to have a conflict with him if he was gonna be a Knick lol

Besides, he made an official request to change his number that year. That's only necessary if you're changing numbers on the same team, like Kobe did with #8 and #24. So LeBron wasn't sure himself if he was gonna leave, otherwise there would be no need for a request.

The Celtics would be the first team in danger of that. Maybe you could have triple digit numbers, or fractions and decimals lol

LOL. I almost forgot about this, but yes it's quite sad. Just a jersey saying "The Fans" on the back and a few EC Champion banners hanging...

Either way, it is kind of dumb/odd for the HEAT.

I don't know what's worse, this or the #6 for fans. The #6 thing is really embarrassing imo..looks so desperate to put a number up, and attempting to get fans to keep coming to games when their team sucks.

I could respect GSW or the Knicks doing it, since their fans are always supportive no matter how bad they are. Magic and Kings are not even in the same category as Warriors or Knicks fans..
I've gone to a couple magic games (not in new arena to be fair) and it was a snooze fest, even with Howard. Half the fans are 60 years old in Orlando (retirement city), I feel bad. At least regular season..new arena looks cool though

I believe the number 23 is officially retired league wide, meaning no one can retire their jersey under 23. Players may still wear the number though. But im not 100%

I think they tried to start a league wide retirement of the #23 like the NHL did with #99, but it didn't catch on i guess.

Riley obviously retired the number because he knew how many silly young players would ask for the number so he said the hell with it and got rid of it all together. It's either that or he just didn't want to see #23 on the court anymore.

Not 100% sure it was fabricated i just remember Shaq saying publically he wouldn't want MJ as a teammate. The talk died immediately after that was said.

Now that Mariano Rivera is retired, no one in the MLB will ever wear 42 again in memory of Jackie Robinson.

His number should be retired. His and his alone. Not one person should have it and I'm not sure why you'd want someone to have it
