View Full Version : NBA executives have discussed adding a four-point line

In an ESPN interview, NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn and VP of basketball operations Kiki Vandeweghe seemed open to the idea, even hinting that the league has discussed it at some level.

Thorn even pointed out that many of today’s shooters, such as Vince Carter, could effectively shoot from any distance. ”Some of the players we have can shoot the ball from I assume it would be 30 feet? 28-30 feet,” he said. “Somewhere in there. Some of the guys we have can shoot that as easily as a 23-, 24-foot shot.”

It’s not a huge stretch to imagine players like Stephen Curry and Jamal Crawford becoming deadly four-point shooters — not to mention the perverse fun of watching the likes of J.R. Smith and Nick Young pull up for four every time down the floor.

However, it does not appear it is likely to happen anytime soon. In response to the interview with Thorn and Vandeweghe, NBA spokesman Tim Frank released a statement:

“No one at the NBA,nor the competition committee, has had any serious conversations about increasing the size of the floor or adding a 4-point line. Rod Thorn and Kiki VanDeWeghe were entertaining a line of questioning about out of the box ideas and ESPN.com chose to make a story that doesn’t exist.”

Me myself I'm not a big fan of adding a 4-point line, but I think half court shots should count as 4 points. In another word just make the half court line the 4 point line.

What do you guys think?

I'm all for change, but that's a negative for me. Just add another foot to each side and allow the corner shooters a bit more room. If they're actually thinking about adding a 4 pt line (not a new idea) then of course they're talking about court expansion as well anyway.

Nothing more annoying than watching a ref squinting at a players heel + toe to see if he's either out of bounds or over the line on a corner three. And unfortunately half the time these geezers are wrong.

It's funny because my dad has been saying this for years and I've always thought it was a horrible idea... I still do.

If we can't discuss about an article that came directly from PSD.com, then I don't know what can we talk about.

The title of this thread came straight from PSD, in fact I copied it and pasted it.

Problem is, the report was fake. The NBA haven't discussed it. At all.

Forget that they need to get rid of out of bounds. Furthermore they should color-code the count. a orange spot can be worth 5 points, a purple one worth 10 points, a green on worth 20 points, etc..... Finally we need to expand the number of players on the court to 10 and play with 2 basketballs.

I would submit this to the front office immediately!!!

Move the 3 point line a foot back if they think it's so easy. Adding a 4 point line is just stupid.

How about this?
if you're foul while shooting a 3-pointer, you don't get 3 FTs. you only get one shot from the 3 point line. If you make it, it count as a 3. If you're foul while shooting 2-pointer you'll get one shot from the FT line. If you make it, it count as 2. And 1s stay as it is.
