First off, let's start with a game. Pretend the rookies vs. sophomore game is still intact. Here are likely rosters for each team, or make your own.

Rookies:
PG - Michael Carter-Williams, Trey Burke
SG - Victor Oladipo, Ben McLemore, Tim Hardaway
SF - Giannis Antetokounmpo, Otto Porter, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
PF - Nerlens Noel
C - Alex Len

Sophomores:
PG - Damian Lillard, Kendall Marshall
SG - Bradley Beal, Dion Waiters
SF - Harrison Barnes, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
PF - Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones
C - Andre Drummond, John Henson

The rookies could win in D-League and get blown out in the NBA. The sophomores could contend. This seems to be equally about how uniquely good and exceptionally bad 2012 and 2013 are, respectively. Could this be the biggest differential between a rookie-sophomore class ever, or are there more lopsided comparisons after the 2003 or 1984 classes?

It has to be the most lopsided ever. They would slaughter the rooks.

Wait until next year. It will be even more lopsided the other way. Next year's rookies compared to this year's...

Exum, Smart, Wiggins, Parker, Embiid as a hypothetical starting 5? Randle, Hood, etc. off the bench? Not even fair.

You didn't even mention Plumlee, Ross, Sullinger, Lamb, and Pat Beverley. That class is looking pretty solid right now. Also, is this the first time a non-injured first overall pick won't even make the rookie-sophmore game?

Henson and Sullinger are better than Val. Val has no business in this game.

There is...

It's just not Rooks vs Sophs, they combine them and have a draft. Just like last year.

They put the players in a pool and have 2 people draft them to their teams.

Ehhh...IDK. They'd still be rookies, and even stud rookies don't always come in and set the world on fire. A few of these current rookies will be better as sophomores as those guys will be as rookies. Not only is the current sophomore class really solid, but they have some experience.

And why do you have Hood as the 7th guy named? ;)

The OP could have added Wolters, Adams, Plumlee, Kelly, Antic, Raduljica and Olynyk...all of whom are contributing to some extent.

It's a bad class, and they'd absolutely get killed in a R vs S game, for sure. But there's some slight hope.

Here's the rosters for the Rising Stars Challenge, BTW

Steven Adams (OKC)
Pero Antic (Hawks)
Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks)
Trey Burke (Jazz)
Michael Carter-Williams (Sixers)
Tim Hardaway Jr (Knicks)
Victor Oladipo (Magic)
Kelly Olynyk (Celtics)
Mason Plumlee (Nets)

Harrison Barnes (Warriors)
Bradley Beal (Wiz)
Anthony Davis (Pelicans)
Andre Drummond (Pistons)
Terrence Jones (Rockets)
Damian Lillard (Blazers)
Jared Sullinger (Celtics)
Dion Waiters (Cavs)
Jonas Valanciunas (Tor)

Only TWO of this past year's top-10 made it.

yes,it probably will be(until next year)
...though the years surrounding '73(when doug collins is the best player of the draft ,you're in trouble) and 2000 would get a laughable beat down to
